Lovin' Life Music Fest evacuates as severe thunderstorm pummels Charlotte

Charlotte's Lovin' Life Music Fest was evacuated Saturday afternoon during Petey Pablo's performance as a severe thunderstorm pummeled uptown, but shortly after 5:30 p.m., organizers began preparing to reopen the festival grounds at 6:15 p.m., and directing fans to its app and social media for updates after 'the official all-clear.' The festival grounds were evacuated around 4:45 p.m., and fans were encouraged to find shelter because of lightning, organizers said on social media. Fans flooded into to the closest shelters — The Market at 7th Street and its parking deck. It didn't take long for the market to reach capacity, and people were blocked off at the door. The festival issued this statement on social media: 'Due to lightning in the area, the Lovin' Life Fest grounds have been temporarily evacuated for safety. We expect the storm to pass within the hour. Please seek shelter and stay tuned to our app and social media for updates.' A short distance away outside the Kendrick Lamar concert, set to start at 7 p.m., Bank of America Stadium officials warned 'Seek cover,' on social media site X. As the rain started to pour, crowds had been hurriedly making their way toward Bank of America stadium. Decked in a Mustard sweater, a concertgoer named Seven said rain and all, he was ready to listen to all of his favorites, including 'wacced out murals.' At 4:30 p.m., the National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30 p.m. for Charlotte, Gastonia and Rock Hill. Winds up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail were possible, NWS meteorologists said. The storm eased up somewhat at 5:10 p.m., with lighter rain and clearer skies. Although at 5:10 p.m., the NWS said a severe thunderstorm warning would continue for Charlotte, Concord and Kannapolis until 5:45 p.m. At 6 p.m., stadium officials signaled what appeared to be an 'all-clear' message on X: 'It's Saturday night in the Queen City, and we've got a SOLD OUT show with Kendrick Lamar and SZA on the Grand National Tour. This one is going to be special.' Display text on the stadium's message boards advising concertgoers to seek cover were removed, and fans moved toward their seats. Around that time, Lovin' Life spokeswoman Chastity Todd told CharlotteFive: 'Lovin' Life Music Fest is preparing to reopen the fest grounds shortly as the weather continues to clear. We're actively monitoring conditions and getting everything ready to welcome fans back. Stay tuned to the Lovin' Life app and our official channels for the official all-clear and updated schedule info.' Todd soon told CharlotteFive the festival would reopen at 6:15 p.m. Check back for updates. This is a developing story. Desiree Mathurin contributed. Club Banger To State Anthem? Petey Pablo's 'Raise Up' Proposed As North Carolina's Official Song

Petey Pablo's iconic 2001 hit 'Raise Up' could soon become the official Hip-Hop anthem of North Carolina, thanks to a new bill filed by Democratic Senators on Tuesday (March 25). Hailing from N.C. himself, Petey Pablo's 'Raise Up' has long been embraced by his fans and the locals. The club banger, which repeatedly shouts out the Old North State, has been a fan favorite since its release and continues to play a significant role in North Carolina's cultural landscape. In fact, many HBCU marching bands have honed in on the track, making it a staple in the song list at football games, events, and more. According to WRAL News, the proposal came after the global celebration of Hip-Hop 50 highlighted the significant contributions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to the genre. 'North Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities have helped shape the rich and diverse sound of North Carolina's Hip-Hop artists,' the senators stated in their proposal. As of now, it's unclear when the bill will be voted on, but the 51-year-old has continued to show that his hit is undeniable. In 2022, he helped make a couple feel extra special as he performed 'Raise Up' at their wedding reception. Petey Pablo shared a heartwarming clip of the performance on Instagram, showing him hyping up the crowd at Justin and Darnella Miller's wedding celebration. Dressed in a brown suit and black turtleneck, he energetically delivered the hook: 'North Carolina! Come on and raise up/ Take your shirt off, twist it 'round your hand/ Spin it like a helicopter.' Guests and the newlyweds followed suit, twirling towels over their heads just like the lyrics suggest. In the post, Petey Pablo wrote: 'Ladies and gentlemen if you want to see what some Good Love looks like here you go congratulations to @donna_ii & @mr_just10 thank you both for allowing me to be a part of something so magical a moment in time that will never be forgotten!!!!' NC bill would name official state hip-hop song

A new Senate bill proposes adopting the song "Raise Up" as North Carolina's official state hip-hop song. Why it matters: All my fellow North Carolinians know the 2001 hit by Petey Pablo. We've all, at some point, whipped a towel or other fabric above our heads and belted along: "This one's for North Carolina! Come on and raise up. Take your shirt off, twist it 'round your hand. Spin it like a helicopter." You've heard it at Panthers and Hurricane games, Lovin' Life Music Fest and on the radio. If passed, the bill would give "Raise Up" official recognition, paying it the same respect our state shows the dogwood flower (state flower) and the cardinal (state bird). North Carolina has a list of state symbols: Milk is our state beverage. Sweet potatoes are our vegetable. Honeybees are our insects. What they're saying: "'Raise Up' was released in August 2001 as a tribute to the people of North Carolina and maintains its cultural significance as an anthem for the State," the bill reads. The big picture: The bill acknowledges the worldwide celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip hop in 2023 and highlights HBCUs' influence on the genre: "North Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities have helped shape the rich and diverse sound of North Carolina's hip hop artists," it states. Context: Petey Pablo was born and raised in Greenville, as were other hip hop icons mentioned in the bill, including J. Cole, Rapsody, 9th Wonder, Phonte and Big Pooh. Grammy-nominated, Pablo was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2024. Between the lines: The bill was filed by Democratic Senators Natalie S. Murdock (Chatham, Durham), Kandie Smith (Edgecombe, Pitt) and DeAndrea Salvador (Mecklenburg). It's not the first state symbol up for debate this year. The House passed bills to add the Moravian cookie as the official state cookie and the Moravian star as North Carolina's official state star. Bill sponsor Rep. Donny Lambeth told Carolina Journal the bills were light-hearted, "feel-good" legislation. A Tepper Sports & Entertainment spokesperson confirmed to Axios in January that they had had conversations with DaBaby about music.
