Brits overpaying for petrol and diesel urged to try hack and save '7p per litre'
UK motorists may be overpaying for petrol and diesel without even realising it. However, an expert has revealed the two-second check he swears by - which could save you hundreds of pounds a year Swathes of Brits may be getting ripped off when refuelling their vehicles - but a simple hack could save them more than £100 every year. An experienced full-time HGV driver has revealed a practical method for cutting down on fuel expenses, after realising just how much petrol and diesel prices can fluctuate. In a conversation with experts at Number 1 Plates, Malcolm Shaw explained how an easy-to-use app called PetrolPrices is key in saving him a small fortune when filling his tank. PetrolPrices is a fuel price comparison app that displays a live map showing petrol and diesel prices submitted by real drivers across the UK. The real-time data allows users to quickly compare prices at nearby forecourts and identify where the cheapest fuel is available on any given day. "It's the first thing I check before a long day," Malcom said. "The difference between the most expensive and cheapest petrol station can be 5, 6, even 7p a litre — and that's just in the same postcode." He says he regularly notices significant savings by simply choosing a petrol station just a short distance from his usual stop. "The other day I saw unleaded at 154.9 at one place, and 147.9 literally around the corner," the pro added. "For a full tank, that's over £4.50 saved, no effort." To put these savings into perspective, the RAC Foundation estimates that the average UK petrol car has a tank size of around 55 litres. Most drivers refuel approximately every 10 to 14 days, which means roughly 30 full refuels a year. So If you save £4.50 every time you fill up, the total annual savings could be in the region of £135. For households with multiple cars or those who commute longer distances, the amount saved could be considerably higher. Malcolm's message is straightforward — if you're not using a fuel price comparison app like PetrolPrices, you're probably paying more than you need to for fuel without even realising it. He advises: "It takes seconds to check and could save you hundreds. I think every driver should have it." Fuel remains one of the largest monthly expenses for many UK households. Apps like PetrolPrices prove that a small change in your routine can make a meaningful difference to your finances. By simply taking a moment to compare prices, drivers can avoid overpaying and keep more money in their pockets. In the current climate, where every penny counts, Malcolm's advice shows how technology can empower drivers to make smarter choices. Whether you're driving a heavy goods vehicle or a family car, using tools like PetrolPrices is a practical way to reduce fuel costs with little extra effort.

Petrol prices near four-year low for bank holiday getaway but drivers 'still being overcharged'
Petrol prices near four-year low for bank holiday getaway but drivers 'still being overcharged' The RAC said the average price of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts on Thursday, May 1, was 134.06p - the lowest figure since July, 2021 Petrol prices have dropped to a near four-year low (Image: PA Archive/PA Images ) Motorists are enjoying cheaper fuel prices as petrol rates have descended to their lowest in nearly four years, just in time for bank holiday excursions. The RAC reported that on Thursday, May 1, the average cost per litre at UK service stations was 134.06p. This figure has not been seen since July, 2021, when it dipped slightly lower to 133.9p. Despite this reduction, the RAC labelled the decline as "disappointing", arguing that it failed to reflect the substantial slashes in oil prices. The motoring organisation's analysis suggested retailers' current wholesale expenses should translate to an average decrease of 4p per litre for both petrol and diesel. Such a reduction would see petrol prices averaging at 130p per litre, with diesel dropping to 136p per litre. Article continues below Similarly, diesel prices at these locations according to Petrol Prices, were 134,7p per litre at Morrisons, 134.7p per litre at Asda, 134.9p at Tesco Extra, and 136.9 per litre at Sainsburys. RAC's head of policy, Simon Williams, commented: "Drivers will be relieved to know that petrol is at its cheapest point in four years." He reminisced about the previously burdensome prices, saying: "During that time, we've had the pain of record prices with petrol averaging 191.5p (and diesel almost £2 a litre) so some better news at the pumps is very welcome." Williams went on to explain: "Now, due to global factors, oil is trading below 65 US dollars, which means the price of both petrol and diesel should fall lower still." He urged retailers to continuously adjust their prices downwards. He added: "Retailers ought to be reducing their prices on a daily basis to reflect the fact they're paying less for new supply." Article continues below Williams hinted towards the possibility of a significant price cut in the future. "Perhaps there might even be an announcement about a hefty price cut from one of the biggest retailers," he said.

County Durham garage hailed 'best in region' after unveiling 129.7p petrol
A County Durham petrol station has once again been hailed as one of the best across the region after it dropped its prices to 129.7p. GW Holmes & Son, an independent garage at Etherley Moor, Bishop Auckland, is currently offering some of the lowest fuel prices in County Durham, according to online site Petrol Prices. Recent price adjustments set rates at 129.7p per litre for unleaded, 137.7p for diesel, and 138.9p for super unleaded. These figures are notably lower than the UK national averages, which stand at 139p for petrol and 146p for diesel, according to data from the RAC. The fuel price drop comes as analysts predict broader reductions across the UK due to declining wholesale costs. The RAC has reported that crude oil prices have fallen from over $80 per barrel in mid-January to below $70, a shift that is expected to lead to lower prices at the pump. However, the extent to which these savings will be passed on by retailers remains uncertain. Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said: 'Drivers have had to endure five months of rising prices, so it's good news wholesale prices have fallen significantly. We expect retailers to start cutting prices this week.' Recommended reading: Ten North East children a week lose 'vital' disability benefits on 16th birthday Plans to 'stabilise' Grade II County Durham church building approved Despite the anticipated reductions, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has previously raised concerns about fuel retailers maintaining higher margins. Their findings indicate that UK drivers paid £900 million more for fuel at supermarkets in 2022 due to pricing strategies, with the total additional costs across all retailers reaching £1.6 billion in 2023. For now, GW Holmes remains one of the few locations in the region offering petrol and diesel prices significantly below the national average. Whether other retailers will follow suit in response to falling wholesale costs remains to be seen.
