County Durham garage hailed 'best in region' after unveiling 129.7p petrol
A County Durham petrol station has once again been hailed as one of the best across the region after it dropped its prices to 129.7p.
GW Holmes & Son, an independent garage at Etherley Moor, Bishop Auckland, is currently offering some of the lowest fuel prices in County Durham, according to online site Petrol Prices.
Recent price adjustments set rates at 129.7p per litre for unleaded, 137.7p for diesel, and 138.9p for super unleaded.
These figures are notably lower than the UK national averages, which stand at 139p for petrol and 146p for diesel, according to data from the RAC.
The fuel price drop comes as analysts predict broader reductions across the UK due to declining wholesale costs.
The RAC has reported that crude oil prices have fallen from over $80 per barrel in mid-January to below $70, a shift that is expected to lead to lower prices at the pump.
However, the extent to which these savings will be passed on by retailers remains uncertain.
Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, said: 'Drivers have had to endure five months of rising prices, so it's good news wholesale prices have fallen significantly. We expect retailers to start cutting prices this week.'

Despite the anticipated reductions, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has previously raised concerns about fuel retailers maintaining higher margins.
Their findings indicate that UK drivers paid £900 million more for fuel at supermarkets in 2022 due to pricing strategies, with the total additional costs across all retailers reaching £1.6 billion in 2023.
For now, GW Holmes remains one of the few locations in the region offering petrol and diesel prices significantly below the national average.
Whether other retailers will follow suit in response to falling wholesale costs remains to be seen.

UK petrol prices poised to fall further as oil prices tumble
Global oil prices have tumbled by more than $1 a barrel in a sign that pressure on households at the petrol pumps could ease further. The price of Brent crude fell to $63.86 a barrel on Thursday following reports that the Opec oil cartel and its allies may increase their production for July, despite weaker global demand for fossil fuels. The price of crude is now well below the $80.53 a barrel average recorded last year, a fall that has helped to put pump prices at their lowest level in almost four years. The RAC motoring group said petrol prices in the UK fell by 2p a litre in April, the second consecutive monthly fall, to an average of 134.1p a litre, while diesel prices fell from 142.6p to 140.6p. The latest data showed that pump prices have now fallen further, to 132.50p a litre for petrol and 138.80p a litre averaged across the UK. The RAC forecasts that fuel prices will continue to fall. Forecourt prices are some of the lowest paid by UK motorists since July 2021, and compare with the peak petrol price of £1.92 in July 2022 after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine triggered a surge in energy markets. The oil market has tumbled from highs of almost $128 a barrel in early 2022, despite the conflict in Ukraine and the war in Gaza. The price fall has accelerated since the US president, Donald Trump, triggered fears of a global economic recession last month by setting a number of tariffs on imported goods. Despite concerns about the health of the global economy, which has a direct impact on the demand for oil, the Opec cartel and its allies, known as Opec+, are reportedly poised to increase their exports by 411,000 barrels a day for July. Although no final agreement has been made, the RBC Capital analyst Helima Croft said in an investor note on Thursday that the reported rise in output was the 'most likely outcome' from the meeting. Opec+ and its de facto leader, Saudi Arabia, cut their production last year to help shore up the global oil price, which has weakened because of shaky demand forecasts and an abundance of supply. It is now in the process of allowing members of the cartel to produce more oil. Croft said: 'A key question will be whether the voluntary cut will be fully drawn down before the leaves turn brown in many parts of the world, in line with the original taper schedule.'

Drivers warned over MOT ‘advisory apathy'
One in six (17%) drivers who ignore MOT advisories experience a vehicle breakdown or crash as a result, a survey suggests. The RAC, which commissioned the poll, said it is 'vital drivers keep a close eye' on any issues raised. MOTs check a number of vehicle parts such as lights, seatbelts, tyres and brakes to ensure they meet legal standards. A vehicle with major problems will fail the test. Drivers often also receive a list of advisories for minor issues they are not required to resolve immediately. Examples include tyre tread close to the legal limit, brake pads almost worn out, and small oil leaks. Some 44% of the 1,460 drivers surveyed who had a vehicle put through an MOT in the previous year said the test resulted in one or more advisories. The warnings were not acted on by 54% of these respondents. Some 17% of this group went on to suffer a vehicle breakdown or collision as a consequence. Separate Department for Transport figures show 39 people were killed and a further 1,865 were injured in crashes on Britain's roads in 2023 in which vehicle defects were a contributory factor. The total number of casualties was the highest since 2018. RAC mobile servicing and repairs team leader Nick Mullender warned that MOT advisories 'demand attention' because they mean a vehicle 'isn't in the best of health'. He said: 'Unfortunately, our research suggests there's a lot of troubling advisory apathy among drivers. 'Advisories indicate the potential for the vehicle to become unroadworthy in a matter of months or even weeks, depending on the nature of the issue and how often the vehicle is driven. 'It's crucial that drivers keep a close eye on any flagged items.' He added: 'An MOT is the most basic of roadworthiness checks, and no replacement for a proper service by a qualified mechanic.' – The survey was conducted by research company Online95 between May 23 and June 1.
