Pakistan-Vietnam trade to hit $1b, eyes $10b target

Vietnam's Ambassador to Pakistan, Pham Anh Tuan, on Monday, said that bilateral trade between Pakistan and Vietnam is expected to soon reach $1 billion, paving the way for a stronger economic partnership. "The steady growth shows the solid foundation on which we can build toward our ambitious target of $10 billion in bilateral trade," the ambassador told APP. The prime ministers of both countries have already agreed on this long-term goal. The ambassador said the vision goes beyond traditional trade and aims to develop a comprehensive economic partnership. With a combined market of 350 million people, both sides see strong potential for deeper integration. He noted Vietnam's global trade volume stands at $800 billion, with plans to reach $1 trillion, creating major opportunities for Pakistani exporters. The ambassador said bilateral trade had reached approximately $850 million in 2024. Pakistan's imports from Vietnam were $522 million, while its exports stood at $328 million. This reflects progress from the previous year, when trade totalled $750 million in 2023. According to 2024 data, Pakistan's main exports to Vietnam include cereals ($117.26 million), cotton ($65.64 million), raw hides and leather ($26.59 million), meat products ($14.33 million), and pharmaceuticals ($10.67 million). Vietnam's key exports to Pakistan include electrical and electronic equipment ($186.67 million), coffee, tea and spices ($30.70 million), and man-made filaments ($20.63 million). Both countries have identified priority sectors for cooperation, such as textiles, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, information technology, and energy. Vietnam is also interested in importing more Pakistani rice, textiles, and leather, while encouraging Pakistani investment in Vietnam's manufacturing and tech industries. The ambassador said the complementary nature of the two economies provides a strong base for growth. Vietnam's strengths in electronics, machinery, and processing align with Pakistan's capabilities in textiles, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. He highlighted the 5th Meeting of the Pakistan-Vietnam Joint Trade Committee, held in Hanoi on July 11, 2025, as a major development in bilateral relations. The meeting was witnessed by Pakistan's Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and Vietnam's Minister of Industry and Trade, Nguyen Hong Dien. At the meeting, both sides agreed to begin negotiations on a Pakistan-Vietnam Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) within 2025. This step is expected to formalise trade ties and reduce commercial barriers. The reactivation of the Joint Trade Committee after eight years marked a strategic reset, said the envoy. The committee serves as a structured platform for sustained dialogue and cooperation. The committee agreed to promote PTA talks, trade promotion, textile and garment cooperation, aquaculture, trade facilitation, and halal trade development. Other areas discussed included aviation, finance, healthcare, human resources, and visa facilitation. The ambassador said both countries aim to enhance trade, investment, technology transfer, and industrial collaboration. He added that the partnership will be supported by institutional frameworks and regular high-level exchanges.

Vietnam, Pakistan to promote cultural tourism

In a significant move to strengthen bilateral relations, Vietnam has proposed a collaborative initiative with Pakistan to boost faith-based and cultural tourism, given their shared Buddhist heritage. The proposal was put forth today by Ambassador of Vietnam Embassy Pham Anh Tuan during a meeting with Pakistan's Minister for National Heritage & Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi. The Ambassador highlighted Vietnam's millennia-old civilization and rich Buddhist history, underscoring its commitment to preserving both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," he stated, emphasising that today's meeting marks a crucial stride in the friendship and cooperation between the two nations. The Vietnamese official proposed several key areas of collaboration, including the promotion of Buddhist pilgrimage tours, cultural festivals and joint heritage projects. A concrete step put forward was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Taxila Museum in Pakistan and leading Vietnamese museums, such as the Vietnam National Museum of History and the Museum of Vietnamese History in Ho Chi Minh City. The MOU aims to facilitate traveling exhibitions that would showcase the rich Buddhist art and heritage of both countries. An example cited was a special exhibition titled "Buddhist Art Along the Silk Road," featuring masterpieces from Taxila alongside Vietnamese artifacts, offering a "window into the past" and a deeper appreciation of their interconnected histories. The proposed partnership extends beyond exhibitions to include facilitating regular exchanges of curators, conservators and archaeologists to share expertise in heritage management and preservation techniques. Developing joint programmes for students, researchers, and the public on Buddhist iconography, archaeological techniques, and heritage conservation.

Positioning Vietnam – Promoting the National Image in the New Era

HANOI, VIETNAM - Media OutReach Newswire - 11 July 2025 – A seminar titled 'Positioning Vietnam – Promoting the National Image in the New Era' was co-hosted in Hanoi on July 9 by Vietnam News and Law newspaper under the Vietnam News Agency and the Department of Grassroots Information and External Information under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The event aimed to gather expert feedback for the Draft Strategy on Promoting Vietnam's National Image Abroad. The strategy's overall goal is to enhance positive information about Vietnam both domestically and internationally, improving global awareness of a stable, developing, innovative and culturally rich country. It seeks to elevate the country's standing on the international stage. According to the draft strategy, which is expected to be submitted to the Prime Minister later this month, by 2030 all provinces and centrally governed cities will implement international communication campaigns aligned with a unified national direction. The plan also targets the organisation of at least 10 major international media campaigns and aims to increase the volume of positive international media coverage and digital content about Vietnam to at least 80 per cent. The strategy further aspires for Vietnam to rank among the top 40 countries with the most favourable media presence globally, attract 35 million international visitors by 2030, and have the cultural industry contribute 7 per cent of GDP by 2030 and 8 per cent by 2035. To achieve these goals, the strategy proposes a diversified communication approach, combining traditional and digital platforms. It also recommends integrating media campaigns into diplomatic, cultural and sports events; partnering with international media outlets, film crews and foreign correspondents. Supporting measures include enhancing local capacity, building unique local brands, conducting international surveys and strengthening the role of external communication platforms. Developing a modern, cohesive and competitive communication strategy is considered a critical step in amplifying Vietnam's values in a rapidly changing world. As Vietnam's global credibility and governance capacity continue to grow, there is a rising need to inspire national development aspirations and promote the image of a strong and resilient nation. Vu Viet Trang, Vietnam News Agency General Director said: 'Positioning the national image is not only the task of the media but an essential part of overall development strategy. To successfully implement the strategy, we need a strong communication ecosystem where mainstream journalism plays a leading role, offering credible data as a foundation for other stakeholders — from KOLs and digital creators to businesses and overseas Vietnamese — to tell a consistent and inspiring story of Vietnam.' Pham Anh Tuan, director of the Department of Grassroots Information and External Information, said 'The competition to shape national image is growing increasingly fierce, yet Vietnam's image still falls short of reflecting our achievements. That's why the Government has assigned the task of developing a long-term, strategic plan to secure our rightful position on the global map.' Nguyen Minh, Viet Nam News and Law's editor-in-chief, said 'We are fully aware of our role in promoting the image of a modern, dynamic and deeply integrated Vietnam that remains rooted in its cultural identity. We continue to innovate our content, expand our digital and multimedia platforms and strengthen cooperation with domestic and international partners to bring authentic and compelling Vietnamese stories to the world.' The seminar gathered representatives from ministries, news agencies, communication experts, businesses and international organisations. Participants exchanged insights and contributed valuable input on the strategy's content. Key discussion topics included national image positioning, storytelling methods to promote Vietnam globally, international best practices in nation branding and the role of digital communication and independent storytellers in a multi-platform era.

Vietnam envoy for expanding economic ties with Pakistan

KARACHI: Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Pham Anh Tuan, has expressed Vietnam's keen interest in strengthening trade and economic relations with Pakistan, as bilateral trade between the two countries approaches the US$1 billion mark. Speaking during his first official visit to the Karachi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI), the Ambassador said that the current trade volume stands at approximately US$850 million, and with concerted efforts, both sides are well positioned to achieve or surpass the US$1 billion target by the end of this year or next year. The Vietnamese Ambassador, while highlighting the importance of strengthening institutional linkages and fostering deeper economic engagement, suggested that by enhancing collaboration between Vietnam Chamber and Karachi Chamber, facilitating timely exchange of trade-related information, encouraging the regular exchange of business delegations, and actively participating in each other's trade fairs and exhibitions, both countries can explore new opportunities for trade and investment while showcasing their products to wider audiences. Ambassador Tuan emphasized that it is time to realize the full potential of Vietnam–Pakistan economic relations. He expressed confidence that with the cooperation of KCCI's leadership and the active participation of Karachi's vibrant business community, the two sides will be able to significantly enhance economic cooperation. Referring to the commitment at the highest level, he mentioned that the Prime Ministers of both countries had met in Saudi Arabia last year and reaffirmed their shared desire to strengthen bilateral trade and commercial ties. Reflecting on his experience in Pakistan, Ambassador Tuan noted that although he assumed charge at the Embassy just ten months ago, it has been sufficient time to gain valuable insights into the country's people and business landscape. 'I am highly impressed by the dynamism of Pakistan's business community. During my tenure, I have had the opportunity to visit several chambers including those in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and now Karachi', he said. He further stated that Vietnam and Pakistan share a longstanding relationship dating back to 1972, and are currently celebrating 53 years of diplomatic relations. He recalled that President Pervez Musharraf was the first Pakistani head of state to visit Vietnam in 2003, which was followed by a state visit by Vietnam's president to Pakistan in 2004. Since then, relations have grown steadily, not only at the political level but also through robust people-to-people and business-to-business engagement. Promoting closer people-to-people contact and fostering greater cooperation between the business communities of both countries remains a key priority for the Vietnamese Embassy, he said, adding that bilateral trade has shown consistent growth over the years, signalling untapped potential for further expansion. Welcoming Vietnamese Ambassador, Senior Vice President KCCI, Zia ul Arfeen, called for intensified efforts to unlock the vast untapped potential in bilateral trade and economic cooperation between Pakistan and Vietnam. Referring to recent trade figures, he highlighted that in FY24, Pakistan's exports to Vietnam stood at approximately US$356 million, while imports from Vietnam were around US$285 million, resulting in a rare trade surplus for Pakistan. 'Despite this positive development, there remains substantial room for expanding our commercial ties in a structured and strategic manner', he added. Arfeen proposed that Pakistan's local industries, particularly in textiles, apparel, agriculture, chemicals, and SMEs, can benefit significantly by learning from Vietnam's experience in industrial modernization, technological advancement, and efficient value chains. Joint ventures and technical partnerships can help boost local production, reduce import dependence, and improve global competitiveness. He further noted that Pakistan and Vietnam can tap into high-potential sectors including IT, minerals, seafood, and tourism. 'Vietnam has established itself as a major seafood exporter, and Pakistan, with its immense but underutilized aquaculture potential, can pursue joint ventures to facilitate technology transfer and export enhancement', he said. Highlighting Pakistan's key export products such as cotton fabrics, home textiles, apparel, synthetic textiles, denim, rice, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits, chemicals, leather, and plastics, he stressed the need to expand market reach beyond traditional destinations. 'ASEAN is a $4 trillion market, but Pakistan's trade is mostly limited to Indonesia and Malaysia. Strengthening ties with Vietnam can be our gateway into the broader ASEAN region', he added. The meeting was attended by Head of Vietnam Trade Mission Ms. Nguyen Thi Diep Ha, KCCI Vice President Faisal Khalil Ahmed, former President Majyd Aziz, and members of KCCI's Managing Committee.
