Diana Ross, Bob Marley's sons to headline Stern Grove this summer

Stern Grove Festival — one of San Francisco's most celebrated outdoor music extravaganzas — returns this summer with more than two months of free shows. State of play: This year's music series begins on Sunday, June 15 and will close with the "Big Picnic" weekend on Aug. 16 and 17, which will feature R&B superstar Diana Ross and Bob Marley's sons — Stephen and Damian — as headliners. Other top performers include the 90s indie-rock group Sleater-Kinney, music duo Phantogram and country singer Orville Peck. Many Bay Area artists are also featured as opening acts. Driving the news: Though Stern Grove Festival has been hosting its free concert series for more than eight decades, this year marks the first where organizers are introducing a new ticketed system. Here's how to score a spot: Lottery system: Lottery entries for each concert will begin six weeks before the event date at 10am and will be open for an entire week. Participants will receive an email a month beforehand and winners will have one week to claim tickets. No limit on number of entries per person. Box office: 1,000 tickets will be available at select sites throughout the city the day before every concert. First-come, first-served basis. Volunteering: All volunteers will receive a ticket to a show. Email [email protected] to apply. Giveaways: The festival has partnered with various groups, including DoTheBay, SF Standard and KALW Radio, to give out tickets leading up to each concert date. Follow on Instagram for how to enter. Table reservation: Reserve a VIP picnic table or individual seat at a community table with a qualifying donation. What's next: The first lottery opens on May 4 for the California Honeydrops on June 11. Table reservations are open now.

Deftones will bring expansive tour to Target Center

The Deftones didn't have Minnesota on the docket when it announced its 2025 North American tour, but the second leg of the tour, announced on Wednesday, will bring the long-running metal outfit to Minneapolis. The band behind White Pony will make a stop at the Target Center on Aug. 29. They'll be joined by Phantogram, who headlined a night at The Fillmore in February, and The Barbarians of California. New music from the group may arrive in the Twin Cities before the band. The Deftones are expected to release an album at some point this year, but details haven't been shared. The last studio effort from the Deftones was 2020's Ohms. The band formed in the early '90s and exploded in popularity with the mid-'90s releases of Adrenaline (1995) and Around the Fur (1997). They separated themselves from the burgeoning nü-metal movement three years later with White Pony, a more sonically dynamic album that continues to earn praise decades later, including a mention among Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All-Time. Other portions of the tour will feature Idles in place of Phantogram, while previously announced dates include shows with The Mars Volta, System of a Down, and Fleshwater. Elsewhere in the Midwest, the Deftones will stop in Chicago (March 31), Detroit (April 1), and Milwaukee (Aug. 30). A Live Nation presale starts on Friday, March 14 at 10 a.m. with the code "FUNKY." Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, March 17 at 10 a.m.

CONCERTS: Deftones at Rogers Aug. 24, 54-40, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings top Beaumont Music Fest June 20-21

Sacramento indie metal kings Deftones have extended their tour right to our doorstep, playing Rogers Place on Aug. 24. The innovative and experimental band sometimes dubbed the 'Radiohead of metal' has in its 37 years strayed into everything from trip hop to funk, dream pop to psychedelia, but is best known for the soupy, slow-burn Change (In the House of Flies), the wispy then face-kick thrash of My Own Summer, the swirly-drunken Mascara and of course that bikini album cover of 1997's stratosphere-rising Around the Fur, followed by White Pony in 2000 — which netted the band a Grammy for Best Metal Performance for the song Elite. With nine albums, they've sold over 10 million albums around the world, streamed 8.3 billion times. Frontman Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter and drummer Abe Cunningham are all childhood friends and Deftones OGs still with the band for those into endurance and continuity, which can likely be attributed at least in part to the fact the band never stays exactly in one place, always willing to push into strange new dimensions. Keyboardist Frank Delgado has also been around since guesting way back on the first album. Phantogram and The Barbarians of California open the show up, general on-sale tickets 10 a.m. Monday, with pre-sales 10 a.m. Friday. Meanwhile, Beaumont Music Festival has announced the lovely Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and iconic Canadian rock band 54-40 as its Friday and Saturday night headliners. Taking place in Beaumont's Four Seasons Park June 20 and 21 — same weekend as North Country Fair up by Driftpile and Sled Island down in Calgary — BMF in its 18th iteration claims the title of longest-running 100 per cent all-Canadian music festival. Friday will also feature Five Alarm Funk, Jeremy Fisher and Shaguar. Saturday — a CanRock celebration — will see The Grapes of Wrath, ODDS and RadioActive join the fun.
