Beat You: This Brand Has Unveiled Its First Tri-Foldable Concept Device Before Samsung

Last Updated: Tecno has unveiled its concept tri-foldable device and did that before Samsung showcases its own product Tecno is the new name entering the tri-foldable segment and it has beaten Samsung by unveiling its Fold concept earlier this week. We're finally seeing foldable phones become more pocketable, at least in their dimensions, and brands are already moving to other form factors with tri-foldable becoming the latest pick of the bunch. The new device is part of Tecno's Phantom Fold series and it will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next year. Tecno says its tri-foldable device has been divided into three sections like the other brands and has a folding design in G-shape. The company has made the inner screen foldable inwards in two phases, which is claimed to protect the panel from scratches. The secondary cover screen is the default size for a regular smartphone. It has adopted a dual-hinge mechanism so that the tri-folding process does not take a hit in a few years. The company has also gone with a self-locking system which ensures there are no gaps when you fold the tri-foldable device. Talking about the screens, the Phantom Ultimate G Fold carries a 9.4-inch display when all the layers are open. It has a dual camera system on the hinge which brings a unique way to click photos. The company says it has a thickness of 11.49mm when folded and 3.49mm when unfolded, which makes it the thinnest tri-foldable device to be publicly showcased. We expect the Phantom Ultimate G Fold to be powered by a high-end chipset but intrigued to see how it fits a battery unit, and how big it might be. Tecno has made a habit of launching some unique products. It had recently unveiled a sleek phone mirroring the Galaxy S25 Edge and the rumored iPhone 17 Air model. The Tecno device manages to pack a 5,000mAh battery which is a lot bigger than what Samsung has managed and Apple could bring later this year. And we also hope to see Samsung's own tri-fold device launch before the end of 2025, as reports have suggested. view comments First Published: July 18, 2025, 16:06 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Tecno reveals Phantom Ultimate Fold G — a bold challenger to Samsung's foldables

With Samsung's rumored tri-folding Galaxy G Fold missing in action, a new company is throwing its hat into the triple-ring. Tecno just teased its Phantom Ultimate G Fold, which the company claims is the world's thinnest tri-folding phone, measuring 11.49mm folded and 3.49mm opened, less than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Of course, the Z Fold 7 is a real phone, while this is a concept. According to Android Central, the hinges on the Phantom Ultimate G Fold are different, with a larger main hinge and a smaller "waterdrop hinge" on the right side. Similar to Samsung's rumored tri-fold, the Phantom concept features a "G-style" inward-folding design with two hinges. This style of fold is designed to protect the interior displays. The conceptual phone is reportedly going to debut at MWC 2026, which typically takes place in February. It is reportedly equipped with a 5,000 mAh battery that powers a 9.94-inch interior display. When it comes to Tecno, its Phantom phones tend to be conceptual and don't actually become reality. Last summer, Tecno teased the Phantom Ultimate 2, another tri-folding device that also featured a "G-style" hinge system. Even if it were to release, neither the G Fold nor the Ultimate 2 are likely to come to the United States, as the phone maker largely sells in China and India. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Meanwhile, Samsung's much-rumored tri-fold is expected to launch in October. That's after the release of a second-generation Huawei Mate XT tri-fold in September. Huawei released the first tri-folding phone in the Mate XT last fall. We found it amazing, and we're looking forward to the next generation of foldable evolution.

This ‘G' Tri-Fold Phone Bends in Ways That Make Me Uncomfortable

Darwinian evolution is speedrunning foldable phone development. 'Z'-style folds from companies like the Huawei Mate XT collapse in a zig-zag pattern, exposing one side of the screen to the elements. The new alternate universe tri-fold could be Tecno's Phantom Ultimate G Fold concept phone that literally wraps around itself like a big 'G.' This actually may be the better way to do tri-folds, but Samsung would need to think long and hard about device integrity if it's using this same design for its own rumored tri-fold that's coming by the end of the year. This is foldable, PHANTOM Ultimate G Fold debuts as the world's thinnest tri-fold — 11.49mm folded, 3.49mm unfolded. Bold design. Limitless possibilities. — tecnomobile (@tecnomobile) July 17, 2025This is China-based Tecno's second attempt at a tri-fold phone. The company previously showed videos of its Z-style tri-fold last year, around the same time that Huawei was making waves with its first commercial phone with triple folding action. The redesigned concept for 2025 folds inwards twice. Unlike a Z-fold tri-fold, this means there's no part of the screen exposed when it's shut. There's a huge benefit to this for the sake of survivability. Foldable screens can bend because they're much thinner than your typical display on a candy bar-shaped smartphone. Having one side of the folded screen exposed at all times means it's more likely to brush up against any dirt or debris. The Mate XT doesn't have an IP rating for water or dust protection, which says a lot for how long the $2,800 device may last even if you keep it safe in your pocket. As we mentioned, this is merely a concept and isn't something you can buy, even if Tecno sold its devices in the U.S. When unfurled, the Phantom Ultimate G Fold has a 9.94-inch display, which is slightly smaller than the Mate XT, though Tecno's device has the added benefit of a separate exterior screen. There are more innovations happening under the hood to allow this inward-facing collapsing mechanism. The rightmost hinge is actually smaller than the one on the left. We don't have any images showing off the inner hinge system, which leaves us with questions about whether the smaller hinge is more or less brittle than the larger one. It could also leave one side of the device heavier than the other. Tecno's device seems innovative in size as well. The Phantom Ultimate G Fold clocks in at 3.49mm thick when unfolded. Even when it's not too thick when folded up at 11.49mm, which is thinner than Huawei's device, it's thicker than Samsung's recent Galaxy Z Fold 7 bi-fold or most other phones you can buy now. I'm honestly not sure how a device of this size could get any thinner without compromising the device's structure or limiting access to a USB-C port. Inevitably, tri-folds will be made for those with thick pockets or XL pocketbooks. This leaves me with extra concerns for the device's durability. More creases and more screen real estate mean there's more surface area to get damaged. What if there's dirt left on the back of the phone that then gets pressed up into the display? Other than screen size, Tecno isn't revealing much in the way of tech specs, save for the promise of an 'over 5,000 mAh battery' and a 'high-performance chipset.' Tecno isn't selling this device just yet, but what's there is enough to make me wonder what's next for foldables. If Samsung's $2,000 Z Fold 7 has finally cracked the thinness debate, where do we go from here? We expect Google will showcase a next-gen folding phone at its Made By Google event on Aug. 20. Rumors persist that Apple is working on its own foldable iPhone. The folding iPhone's thickness could be the deciding factor in whether it succeeds. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested it could be as thin as 4.5mm when unfolded, which would make it close to 9mm when shut. More recent rumors suggest it could be larger, but without official word from more reliable sources, we can only continue to guess until its rumored release date in 2026.

Tecno's Phantom Ultimate G Fold tri-foldable concept folds inwards to protect the display

A year ago, Tecno showed off a prototype tri-foldable phone called the Phantom Ultimate 2 (in case you're wondering, the original Phantom Ultimate was a rollable concept from 2023). However, the company is now experimenting with a different tri-fold layout that offers better protection for the display. The Tecno Phantom Ultimate G Fold concept folds inwards, which keeps the vulnerable 9.94' main display completely inside the phone's body when folded. This is similar to the horizontal bi-folds of today and features a cover display that is used when the phone is folded. The Phantom Ultimate G Fold tri-fold concept has a huge 9.94' display inside The old Phantom Ultimate 2 concept was more like the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate – it only had one display and folded in such a way that left one third of it exposed in lieu of a cover display. The Phantom Ultimate G Fold concept changes that. It has a small hinge that forms a small teardrop shape as it folds the right third of the display. Then a larger hinge folds over that and a self-locking mechanism keeps the device closed. The Phantom Ultimate G Fold uses two sizes of hinges The result is an impressively thin phone when folded, just 11.49mm. Unfolding it drops the thickness to just 3.49mm. For comparison, Huawei's tri-fold phone (which is a production model, to be fair, not just a prototype) is 12.8mm folded and 3.6-4.8mm unfolded (different segments have different thicknesses). The extra cover display does add a bit of thickness – the Phantom Ultimate 2 concept was 11mm – but that is a small price to pay for a more durable device. The Phantom Ultimate G Fold is only 3.49mm thick when unfolded The G Fold has a battery capacity of 'over 5,000mAh', which is quite impressive, given how thin the individual segments are. We'd like to see an exact number, though, as Huawei managed to go up to 5,600mAh. The triple camera (lens and sensor details TBA) lives on the middle third of the Tecno Phantom Ultimate G Fold – that puts it on the back of the device when folded. The hinges can be held at various angles, which allows you to aim the camera as if it were on a tripod. Tecno utilized ultra-high-strength steel (2,000MPa) and a thin-but-strong Titan Fiber plate (measuring just 0.3mm) for the back cover to make this design possible. Tecno Phantom Ultimate G Fold Some details are kept under wraps for now, like the size of the cover display, the weight of the phone and so on. The chipset is described as 'high-performance', but we don't even know its brand. Not that it matters all that much – again, the Phantom Ultimate G Fold is just a concept device. If you want to see it in person, Tecno will bring it to its booth at MWC 2026. The company is sure to bring more phones (foldable and otherwise) to the congress too - like, say, the sequels to the Phantom V Flip and V Fold.
