The last player to switch between the two was Phil Chisnall, who left Old Trafford for Anfield in 1964.
That almost ended in 2007 when United's Gabriel Heinze demanded a move to Liverpool after falling out with Sir Alex Ferguson.
But the legendary manager refused to cave in and instead sold Heinze to Real Madrid.
There have been instances of players starring for both United and Liverpool without transferring directly between the two.

Paul Ince left United for Inter Milan in 1995 after two title wins.
But he was soon back in England when Liverpool came calling in 1997.
Elsewhere, Michael Owen scored 158 goals for his boyhood Merseyside club before joining Real Madrid in 2004.
A year later he signed for Newcastle and ended up moving to United in 2009, where he eventually won a Premier League title.
