Ryan Gosling's Latest Appearance Is a 180 From His Wild Sci‑Fi Transformation
Ryan Gosling's Latest Appearance Is a 180 From His Wild Sci‑Fi Transformation originally appeared on Parade. Ryan Gosling is ditching his wild beard and long locks from the sci-fi transformation he debuted earlier this summer. Over the weekend, the 44-year-old actor stopped by San Diego Comic-Con where he appeared on a panel to discuss his upcoming film, Project Hail Mary. While Gosling was on hand to discuss his on screen journey to space, he looked nothing like his character. In the trailer, which premiered in June, Gosling was almost unrecognizable with a bushy beard and unwashed, stringy hair — and at Comic-Con, Gosling was back to his usual, well-kept self. He was joined by the film's directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as well as screenwriter Drew Goddard and author Andy Weir, who penned The Martian, the novel that inspired the film. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 The movie is set to follow middle school teacher Ryland Grace who is tasked with traveling to space, 11.9 light-years away, in order to figure out why the sun is dying and save Earth from extinction. In the midst of his endeavor, Grace wakes up on a spaceship, confused about why he is there and lacking any recollection of his past. Although the teacher attempts to bow out of the massive responsibility, he quickly learns that he doesn't have a choice in the matter. While discussing his physical transformation for the role at the event, Gosling jokingly referred to his character as "a space caveman, in this placenta onesie" — noting that he hopes to see the placenta onesie at Comic-Con in the future. Gosling added that he and the writers "tried to create these different layers to him as he's evolving from a space caveman to a space person that needs to do some really important stuff." "What's so inspiring about him is he reacts to a lot of things like I might or a lot of us might, and he's terrified appropriately of the task at hand," Gosling said, per PEOPLE. "He's somebody who on Earth had given up on himself, and has been given this opportunity to believe in himself again." Project Hail Mary is set to premiere March 20, 2026. The Directors of ‘Project Hail Mary' Explain Why the Movie Is a PC, Not a Mac
Making movies is all about compromises. This actor is unavailable, so you cast someone else. That location is too expensive, so let's build a set. This shot is impossible, so let's think of something better. At every step, the big, huge mechanism of filmmaking is always a work in progress. But on Project Hail Mary, directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord tried to embrace a new philosophy. 'What's great about this movie is there are so many things that make it harder to make,' Miller said in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. 'All of the zero G, all of the centrifugal gravity, the characters have to have a wall between them because their atmospheres are different. Everything that a regular movie would be like, 'Oh, we can change that,' we were like, 'Anything that makes it harder we're not going to change.' We're going to stay true to it, and then that difficulty is what makes it interesting and makes it special.' His co-director, Phil Lord, put it another way. 'We kept saying, with respect, this movie is not a Mac, it's a PC,' he said, to much laughter. 'The movie is a machine, the ship is a machine; it can be beautiful, it just can't be pretty.' It is true that almost everything about Project Hail Mary makes it seem incredibly difficult to make. Most of the movie is set on a spaceship. That spaceship meets an alien race represented by a creature made out of stone that doesn't speak English. Changing the setting or the character could've still conveyed the overall idea of the story, but it wouldn't be the story author Andy Weir wrote in his novel. So everything had to be right. So how did Lord and Miller bring that rock creature, nicknamed Rocky, to life? 'We called our friend Neil Scanlan at the Lucasfilm creature shop, and we tackled it together,' Miller said. 'We built a practical creature that was puppeteered by an amazing puppeteer named James Ortiz and a team of five, which we called the Rocketeers, and it was amazing having Rocky there on set every day so that we could have a real interaction and shoot the whole thing practically. Ultimately, it's going to end up being a beautiful blend of creature puppetry and animation, and he comes alive in a way that you would die for this character.' Sounds like it's beautiful, but maybe not pretty, just like a PC. Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, opens in theaters on March 20. Want more io9 news? Ryan Gosling returns to familiar dashing self at Comic-Con after wild transformation for Project Hail Mary
Ryan Gosling was back to his usual, handsome self as he attended the Project Hail Mary panel during 2025 Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday, after unveiling his dramatic transformation for the new film. The Golden Globe winner, 44, looked unrecognizable in the latest record-breaking trailer for the upcoming sci-fi movie - which is based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir. The actor had the chance to discuss aspects of the anticipated film while joined by Weir as well as directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and screenwriter Drew Goddard. Ryan donned a blue and yellow-patterned button up as well as a pair of classic denim jeans. He additionally opted for a flashy silver watch on his left wrist as well as a yellow cap on top of his head that had 'Cat' printed on the front - referencing to the heavy equipment company. Ryan's outfit was the complete opposite of his nearly unrecognizable look in Project Hail Mary - which is slated to hit theaters next year on March 20, 2026. Not long after the trailer dropped late last month, the three-minute clip broke records after raking in 400 million views globally in just the first week according to WaveMetrix, per Deadline. The large number of views is also the most ever for an original movie trailer that is not based on a sequel or a remake. However, it is not fully clear how the views were counted - with YouTube needing an individual to click on a video for at least 30 seconds in order for it to be a considered as a view. Project Hail Mary is being released through Amazon MGM Studios - with the trailer also being a big milestone for the production company. The clip showed Ryan's wild transformation with a scruffy beard and long hair as he ventures up to space on a mission to save humanity. He portrays the character of a middle school science teacher named Ryland Grace who is chosen to take on the vital task. The trailer began with Ryan's character waking up from a coma inside the rocket ship that is floating in space and also gives a glimpse at how his journey began. Towards the end, fans were able to get a look at an alien named Rocky that his character also crosses paths with during the mission. On YouTube, one penned, 'I'm not lying when I say Project Hail Mary is the GREATEST science fiction book I've ever read, so excited to see this on screen.' Another added, 'This movie better be 8 hours long,' while a fan shared, 'The book is a masterpiece, be ready everyone, this might be something incredibly special.' 'Cried reading the book. Cried watching the trailer. Will 100% cry during the movie,' one typed, and another wrote, 'I have rarely been this excited to see a movie. Jazz hands forever!' A viewer commented, 'I saw the trailer and decided to read the book. I haven't read a book in 20 years.. Could. not. put. it. down. Yes! Yes, yes, yes! Amaze.' The directors also took to X to offer their own thoughts upon hearing the record-breaking milestone the trailer made. Phil penned, 'Holy Moly! Thank you all you glorious generous fans of movies/books/near light speed space travel/the Sun for pushing the trailer for Project Hail Mary past 400 million views - the most in one week for a non-sequel non-remake original film trailer... ever. 'Can't wait to thank some of you in person at San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H with our pals Ryan, Andy, and Drew... and a few other surprises...' Social media users shared their thoughts over the trailer when it dropped, with some expressing their excitement over the adaption During the panel discussion on Saturday, Ryan as well as the directors and screenwriter talked to the audience about the project. Andy - who was a producer on the movie - also joined in at the event as well. Those in attendance were able to see the first five minutes of the movie as well as other snippets of scenes, per The Hollywood Reporter. Ryan talked about playing Ryland Grace and expressed, 'I connected to his reluctance. He's quite an ordinary person.' Phil and Christopher also discussed having the chance to collaborate with The Notebook star on the project. Christopher said, 'We wanted to do something with Ryan for a long time. This was the most rewarding collaboration of our careers.' Phil then chimed in to humorously add, 'It answers the question, "If the universe depends on it, can adult men make friends?"' Andy also praised Ryan's performance and stated, 'Seeing Ryan give so many layers to this character I made up, I was like, "Wow, this character is really cool."' In the trailer, fans were able to get a slight glimpse at the alien Rocky and while the creature 'doesn't have eyes or a mouth or a face,' Christopher said viewers would still 'die for this character.' Alongside Ryan, other stars that were cast in the upcoming film included Sandra Huller - who is known for The Zone Of Interest and Anatomy Of The Fall. Phil and Christopher have worked on other projects together as well, such as 21 Jump Street and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Andy is not only known for penning Project Hail Mary but also The Martian - which was adapted into the 2015 film starring Matt Damon. During an interview with earlier this month, the author opened up about the movie adaptation of Project Hail Mary and his thoughts on the film as a whole. 'They showed it to me well in advance,' Andy said. 'I'm a producer on this film so I'm involved in giving notes and stuff this time so it's kinda cool. It's nice to pretend I'm a bigshot. But I was really psyched. 'I always try to put myself in the mind of the viewer for movie stuff or reader for book stuff and try to blank my mind and imagine I don't know anything about the story.' Andy also talked about Ryan's portrayal of the story's protagonist and said, 'Ryan [Gosling] is funny. He's got a good natural understanding of comedy and timing. 'He was really engaged, and he'd want to talk to me every day about scenes and what's going through Grace's mind. I was there for the shoot and on set all the time. That was really cool.' Andy further recalled, 'I got to be a Hollywood mover and or a shaker. They actually offered to assign me an assistant. I said no, I don't have enough for an assistant to do. 'There's almost nothing more useless on a set than the writer. Although there was a lot more work for me to do than I expected. It was awesome.'

Ryan Gosling Unveils Hilarious Footage of His 'Project Hail Mary' 'Space Caveman' Character at Comic-Con
From directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, 'Project Hail Mary' is in theaters on March 20, 2026 Ryan Gosling is ready to take moviegoers to space. The actor-producer, 44, appeared at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 26, to tease his upcoming spacefaring blockbuster Project Hail Mary, a science-fiction comedy based on author Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name. The movie sees Gosling as a middle school science teacher named Ryland Grace, tasked with traveling into space 11.9 light-years away in order to determine why dozens of stars — and the sun — are dying, risking extinction of all life on Earth. "It took me places I've never been, it showed me things I had never seen," said Gosling of the film. "It was as heartbreaking as it was funny. ... This story is about a scared guy who has to do something impossible. Now, I was a scared guy who had to do something impossible, just trying to turn this into a movie." Oscar-winning filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) directed Project Hail Mary from a script by Drew Goddard, who also adapted author Weir's novel The Martian into the space-faring film that starred Matt Damon. Lord, Miller, Goddard and Weir joined Gosling for the footage-filled Hall H panel, moderated by Josh Horowitz. The crowd was treated to the hilarious first five minutes of the film, depicting Gosling's Grace — who he called "an ordinary person in this extraordinary situation" — waking up from a cryogenic state. "You may have noticed he looks like a space caveman, in this placenta onesie," quipped the Barbie star. A placenta onesie, he added, is a costume "I hope to be seeing at Comic-Con one of these days.' Working closely with Goddard and Weir, Gosling said he "tried to create these different layers to him as he's evolving from a space caveman to a space person that needs to do some really important stuff." "What's so inspiring about him is he reacts to a lot of things like I might or a lot of us might, and he's terrified appropriately of the task at hand," he continued. "He's somebody who on Earth had given up on himself, and has been given this opportunity to believe in himself again." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. A teaser trailer released on June 30 shows Gosling's character spending a significant amount of time alone in space. He also appears to befriend an alien on his mission, which is dubbed the titular "Project Hail Mary" by costar Sandra Hüller. That mineral-like alien, the team revealed, is nicknamed Rocky. 'It's too soon to talk about Rocky," demurred Gosling. "He's not here to speak for himself.' The faceless, five-limbed creature, glimpsed in another scene, will come to life through a mix of computer-generated animation and puppetry courtesy of The Jim Henson Company, the team revealed. "It comes alive in a way where you would die for this character," said Miller, pointing out that strange creatures don't need faces to be beloved. Miller, Lord and their designers worked diligently on nailing the accuracy in Project Hail Mary's math and science, consulting Weir for questions on astronomy. Ultimately, Miller said, "it's a story about connection, it's about hopefulness and about humanity. It's a very emotional story." Lord quipped that the movie "answers the question: 'If the universe depended on it, can adult men make friends in six days?' " Project Hail Mary, costarring Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub and Ken Leung, is in theaters on March 20, 2026. San Diego Comic-Con 2025 runs from July 24 to July 27. Ryan Gosling introduces his 'space caveman' and alien partner in 'Project Hail Mary 'Comic-Con panel
"This was the most rewarding creative collaboration of our careers," co-director Christopher Miller told Hall H. Ryan Gosling took San Diego Comic-Con 2025 by storm on Saturday. The La La Land star appeared at a Hall H panel to promote his upcoming film Project Hail Mary, a sci-fi adventure based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir (The Martian), who also joined him on stage. Gosling hailed the author as the "greatest sci-fi mind of our time." The actor was joined by the film's directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie), as well as screenwriter Drew Goddard. "The movie is about collaboration, and this was the most rewarding creative collaboration of our careers," Miller told the audience. "It's really good, guys," Weir promised. In the film, Gosling plays Dr. Ryland Grace, a middle-school teacher-turned-astronaut who embarks on a mission to save humanity when the Earth's sun (and almost every other star in the galaxy) threatens to flicker out. Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) portrays the head of the titular project, Eva Stratt, while Milana Vayntrub (Other Space) plays Olesya Ilyukhina, one of Ryland's ill-fated crewmates. A 5-minute clip of the movie with unfinished VFX was then shown in Hall H, which was outfitted with special screens that extended around much of the room. In the scene, a large bag unzips with Gosling's Ryland inside. A robot arm pulls a breathing tube out of his mouth as red and blue lights flash. Gagging and coughing up water, Ryland rolls out of the bag and falls to the floor of a spaceship. The robot asks rudimentary questions, like, "What is 2 + 2?" as the disoriented astronaut tries to get his bearings. His hair and beard are shaggy and overgrown. "Please remember that muscle function has not yet been restored," the robot warns. Ryland then approaches his crewmember's cots and sees that they appear to be dead. He climbs a ladder up to a circular hall in the spaceship and asks, "Where am I?" Outside a window, he sees he's traveling through space. "I'm a little embarrassed to admit this here: I have not read the book yet," Goddard joked after the clip. "Any numbers you see on a whiteboard or on a screen, I put hours into making sure those were correct," Weir, known for technical accuracy in his writing, revealed. "This is the most complex movie we've ever made, and we made two Dunes," Lord told the audience, repeating what Fraser and the VFX coordinator (who worked on both Dune movies) said to each other on set. In another clip, Huller's Stratt shows up at the middle school where Ryland teaches to recruit him to the world-saving mission. "Am I expendable? Is that why you want me?" he asks. "That's not the only reason," she replies cooly. Inside a laboratory and wearing a hazmat suit, Ryland opens a canister with a mysterious goo inside, which he inspects under a microscope. "It's a cell. It's a tiny alien cell. Guys, this is first contact with life, outside of the... Uh oh. Oh, it died," he tells a group of military personnel observing from a safe distance behind glass. Speaking to Hall H after the clip, Gosling said of his character, "He goes through such an emotional journey, a personal journey, he evolves in so many ways, but yeah, as you saw in the first scene, he wakes up out of cryo and he looks like a space caveman and he's sort of in this placenta onesie thing — that I hope to be seeing at Comic-Con one of these days, that's my dream." "The set was visited by more than one actual astronaut who had been to space, and they watched your footage and were like, 'That's a lot more what it's like,'" Lord said of another clip showing Ryland struggling to stabilize himself in zero G. In the film, Ryland must join forces with an alien he dubs "Rocky" to solve the problem of the dying stars. After the actor said that it was "too soon" to discuss his extraterrestrial counterpart, Weir joked, "From Emma Stone to person of stone," referring to Gosling's La La Land bring Rocky to life, the directors opted for practical effects over CGI, creating a Rocky puppet. "A beautiful blend of creature puppetry and animation," Miller said. "He comes alive in a way where you would die for this character." He added, "Rocky does not have a made of rocks and has five legs." "No amount of physical discomfort by Ryan was too much," Weird added, joking, "We were willing to make that sacrifice. He's the Fall Guy." In yet another clip, Ryland is seen climbing down into Rocky's spaceship and meeting the alien for the first time through a small window. Ryland taps on what appears to be glass, and a mysterious hand slams against it, causing the astronaut to jump back in fear." Rocky then communicates with Ryland by holding up a small metal figurine of a man and a spaceship, seemingly pantomiming what he would like Gosling to do. Also featuring Lionel Boyce (The Bear) and Ken Leung (Industry), Project Hail Mary hits theaters on March 20, 2026. Check out more of .
