BI warns of new overseas romance scam hubs luring Filipinos with fake jobs

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has issued a public warning about new romance scam operations abroad that are exploiting Filipinos by luring them with false job offers. This alert comes in light of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s intensified efforts to combat online job scams that victimize aspiring Filipino workers. BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado confirmed the return of a 24-year-old Filipino man who was rescued from such a scam operation in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He arrived via Philippine Airlines following a repatriation effort coordinated with the Philippine Embassy. According to the victim, he was forced to pose as a woman using multiple fake profiles on dating apps like Tinder. His job involved initiating chats with unsuspecting users under the guise of a 'wrong send' message, eventually engaging in romantic exchanges to deceive and manipulate them. The victim revealed that he was made to work grueling 15-hour shifts and was physically intimidated by his handlers using head taps and stun batons whenever he failed to meet performance quotas. Commissioner Viado stressed that these aren't ordinary scams but highly organized human trafficking operations. He warned Filipinos to be cautious and thoroughly verify any overseas job offers. The BI has already handed over intelligence gathered from the incident to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) to track and prosecute those behind these schemes. 'These operations prey on the desperation of people looking for better lives abroad,' Viado said. 'We're committed to dismantling these networks and protecting our citizens.'

Kim Chiu recounts ‘frightening' flight scare after technical issue forces plane to return to Manila

Kapamilya actress Kim Chiu opened up about a nerve-wracking experience earlier this week after her flight bound for Butuan was forced to return to Manila due to a reported technical issue. The My Love Will Make You Disappear actress shared on social media how the incident left her shaken but ultimately thankful that she and her fellow passengers were safe. The actress was on board Philippine Airlines flight PR2967 on July 9 bound to Butuan-Bancasi Airport. Their flight, originally scheduled to depart at 4:30 a.m., was delayed by over an hour. Minutes after takeoff, passengers were informed by the pilot that the aircraft would need to return to Manila due to a technical issue. She also shared noticing crew members repeatedly entering the cockpit, which triggered her anxiety. 'I tried to calm myself by sleeping it off, but when I woke up and we were still on the ground. My thoughts went wild. As we turned back mid-air, all I could do was pray,' she said. Despite the scare, the flight landed safely back in Manila. Kim expressed gratitude toward the airline's crew and reflected on the importance of valuing life. 'It was a frightening experience––but I'm grateful. Grateful we made it back. Grateful to walk off that plane and breathe a little easier. Safety should never feel uncertain, but today reminded me just how precious and fragile life is,' she said. Chiu eventually made it to her destination where she appeared in a scheduled guesting with her on-screen partner, Paulo Avelino.

Philippine Airlines launches direct Manila–Da Nang route

DA NANG (Vietnam News/ANN): Philippine Airlines on July 1 officially inaugurated its direct flight route connecting Manila and Da Nang, with its first flight carrying 193 passengers landing at Da Nang International Airport at 12:45 pm. The new service operates three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, using Airbus A321 aircraft with 199 seats, including 12 in business class. The frequency is expected to increase to four flights per week from this November. A welcome ceremony was held at the international arrival terminal, featuring a water cannon salute, traditional music performances, ribbon-cutting, and souvenir gifts for arriving passengers. At the departure terminal, a send-off event with gifts was organised for passengers flying from Da Nang to Manila on Flight PR586. Speaking at the event, Nguyen Thi Hoai An, Deputy Director of the Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the launch coincided with the city's newly expanded tourism space and services. The new route brings the total number of weekly Manila–Da Nang flights to 12, helping boost tourism and connectivity between the two cities. In 2024, over 65,000 Philippine tourists visited Da Nang. In the first five months of 2025 alone, the central city welcomed more than 49,000 Philippine visitors, up 2.26 times year-on-year. Philippine Airlines operates scheduled direct flights from hubs in Manila, Cebu, Clark, and Davao to 31 domestic and 38 international destinations across Asia, North America, Australia, and the Middle East. The carrier now runs 24 direct weekly flights from Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi to the Philippines. - Vietnam News/ANN
