(Photo: ABS-CBN) MANILA: In recognition of Pope Leo XIV (Robert Francis Prevost), who was elected as the 268th Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has issued a special commemorative stamp. In a social media post on August 6, PHLPost stated that the Philippines, a country with a large Catholic population, joins the global Catholic community in prayer and celebration, marking this momentous occasion in Church history. Pope Leo XIV is honoured in this stamp issue for his profound spiritual leadership and dedication to compassion, inclusivity, and global unity, values that resonate deeply with the Filipino people. As a former missionary in Cebu and other areas in the central Philippines, Pope Leo XIV shares a special bond with the country. With this commemorative release, PHLPost reaffirms its mission to preserve history, culture, and faith through the philatelic tradition of stamp collecting. The stamp designs feature the Pope's portrait alongside symbols related to his papacy. Pope-themed stamps, particularly those marking significant papal events, remain highly sought after by collectors worldwide due to their historical significance, rarity, and artistic value. Many collectors treasure these stamps for the personal connection they evoke with the Holy Father. PHLPost has printed 10,000 copies of the commemorative stamp. A matching First Day Cover is also available. Both can be purchased at the Postshop, located in the Annex I Building of the Manila Central Post Office Compound, Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila. Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, PHLPost also released a special commemorative stamp in June of that year. --RVA

Founding member Philippines commemorates 80 years of the UN with stamp

Image: Philippine Postal Corporation Eighty years ago, on June 26, 1945, the Philippines joined 50 other nations in signing the United Nations Charter in San Francisco, marking the birth of the United Nations. Today, the UN has grown to include 193 member states. The Philippine delegation to the signing ceremony was led by then-Brigadier General Carlos P. Romulo, who would later serve as the country's Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Romulo played a pivotal role in the formation of the UN and was the first Asian to serve as President of the United Nations General Assembly in 1949. To commemorate this historic milestone, the Department of Foreign Affairs' Office of the United Nations and International Organizations (DFA-UNIO), in partnership with the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost), officially launched the UN80 Commemorative Stamps at the National Museum of Fine Arts. The stamp, titled 'Hope and Endeavor,' features the radiant sun from the Philippine flag alongside the United Nations emblem. It was designed by Filipino diplomat Marthy Arguelles Angue and symbolizes the Philippines' enduring commitment to peace, diplomacy, and international cooperation. During the unveiling ceremony, PHLPost Postmaster General and CEO Luis D. Carlos remarked, 'Today's unveiling of the UN80 Stamps is a powerful reminder that the smallest objects can hold the greatest meanings.' In addition to the stamp launch, the DFA introduced a digital historical archive compiling all Philippine statements delivered at the United Nations General Assembly from 1946 to 2024. This resource aims to support students, scholars, and diplomats in understanding the Philippines' diplomatic legacy and evolving role in global affairs. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Charles Jose emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, 'In an era of crisis and uncertainty, our country has and will always choose the path of global cooperation, anchored in principle and fueled by hope.' — BM, GMA Integrated News

PHLPost launches postage stamp honoring Pope Francis

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) on Thursday launched a commemorative stamp honoring Pope Francis. In a statement, PHLPost said the release of Pope Francis' stamp celebrates his 'enduring legacy of faith, compassion, and service to humanity.' The stamp is in a se-tenant format or printed from the same plate. It consists of a connected pair with unique designs. 'One highlights Pope Francis's spiritual humility, while the other reflects his strong advocacy for peace, social justice, and environmental stewardship,' PHLPost said. It explained that the format presents the dual aspect of Pope Francis' mission and influence across religious and global humanitarian efforts. The commemorative stamp has 20,000 printed copies. There are also 1,000 pieces of the Official First Day Cover, which has the newly issued stamps and a cancellation postmark stamped with the official release date. These limited-edition items are now available for purchase at the Manila Central Post Office. 'Through this stamp, we are sending a message of unity, love, and faith that transcends borders. It is our humble way of honoring a global religious figure who has touched countless lives, including millions of Filipinos,' Postmaster General and CEO Luis Carlos said. PHLPost previously released stamps of Pope Francis, including the 2015 commemorative stamp during his apostolic visit to the Philippines and the 2014 stamp that marked the first year of his papacy. Pope Francis, who replaced the late Pope Benedict XVI in 2013, died at the age of 88 on April 21, 2025, due to a stroke and irreversible heart failure. He was succeeded by Pope Leo XIV, who was inaugurated on May 18, 2025. —VBL, GMA Integrated News
