Fast food chain from Netherlands that ‘beats McDonald's' to open 100 UK sites

We've seen an influx of American and Canadian fast food chains setting up shop over the pond lately – from Dave's Hot Chicken to Carl's Jr. But in a surprising twist, it's a burger joint from the Netherlands that you could soon see popping up all over the UK and Ireland. Fat Phill's, which is said to be home to Amsterdam's 'best burger', quietly launched in Clapham Junction in London at the end of 2024, serving up smash burgers, American style sandwiches, loaded fries and mac and cheese. And it's just been announced that a new restaurant will be opening in the Republic of Ireland in June, located in Dublin's Temple Bar. The chain, also known as Fat Phill's Diner, is still relatively new, having only been founded in 2019 by Armin Vahabian, but it's already got 18 locations across the Netherlands. It's been brought over here by Freshly Baked Ltd, the franchisor behind pretzel joint Auntie Anne's UK and as part of this deal there are plans to open several more sites on London high streets in the near future and develop up to 100 sites nationwide over the next 10 years. Multiple sites also look set to roll out across Ireland by 2030. The menu is all about the burgers, and the theme is very much the bigger the better, with customers able to triple any of the items as they please. Perhaps the largest item on the menu is the Big Belly – a quadruple cheeseburger served with crispy bacon. However, it's the signature Double Cheeseburger that the chain is best known for. There's also a Tamale Burger for those who like it hot which features a Double Cheeseburger, glazed onion, grilled jalapeños, spicy mayo and mustard. But if you prefer chicken to beef, there are also a few chicken options made using Nashville Hot chicken. Other items on the menu include the Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich which sees thinly sliced ribeye steak topped with cheese, onions, jalapenos and Phill's secret sauce. There's also loaded or layered fries, Buffalo Wings, a selection of sauces such as Ranch and Truffle Mayo, and milkshakes in flavours like pistachio. Online the chain has garnered numerous rave reviews, with people branding the food 'amazing', 'delicious' and 'insane'. Food blogger By Row claimed the chain is better than competitors like McDonald's, writing: 'I can confidently say that this restaurant beats out McDonald's and KFC any day of the week.' While many said they make the 'best' burgers. On Reddit u/Dependent_Monitor215 posted: 'Fat Phill's Diner has the BEST burgers in Amsterdam. I've ordered from everywhere. Trust me on this one.' The current London branch has drummed up some great reviews, garnering 4.7 stars on Google. Matt Gough gave five stars, saying: 'Fantastic food! We tried the meaty burger, the Nashville fried chicken burger, loaded fries and mozzarella sticks. All amazing. Deffo recommend checking this place out if you need some fried goodness!' More Trending And Minemar2 Martinez shared: 'Delicious burgers, the flavor of the meat is unique, everything is very fresh and super smashed. The quality and quantity are excellent.' FaithsStardust added: 'Just had one of their Nashville hot burgers at their launch….demolished it in seconds, yummy! The Greeter serving the food was lovely too. It's nice that McDonald's in Clapham Junction, finally has a competitor.' View More » A version of this article was first published on January 1, 2025. Do you have a story to share? Iowa Farm Sanctuary details likely cause of Phill the water buffalo's death

OXFORD, Iowa — The Iowa Farm Sanctuary has released more information about how Phill the water buffalo likely died. Late last week Phill was rushed to the Iowa State University Large Animal Hospital after he became lethargic, had a loss of appetite, and was unable to stand steady on his feet. On Valentine's Day the sanctuary announced that Phill, who captured the hearts of Iowans with his escape in August, had died. Iowa House bill would ban abortion medications in the state On Wednesday the sanctuary detailed in a Facebook Live what they've learned so far about how Phill died. According to the sanctuary, it's believed that Phill died due to complications with the lead bullet he had been shot with when Pleasant Hill police tried to capture him after his escape from a farm. Following his recapture, Phill was taken to the Iowa Farm Sanctuary, and was receiving regular treatment. His medical team believed the lead bullet he was shot with was likely free floating in his abdomen, and he received consistent blood testing to ensure he didn't develop lead poisoning. During a necropsy, the medical team noticed that Phill had no body fat and had no fat around his heart, which is abnormal, the sanctuary said. Water buffalo have four chambers in their stomach — the rumen, the reticulum, the omasum, and the abomasum. Phill's rumen was found to have compacted food and was moving slower than normal. They also found that the lead bullet wasn't free floating, and had actually entered his rumen and moved to his reticulum. It's believed that the lead bullet was being broken down by the stomach acid. It was also discovered that Phill had developed lesions in his rumen and had sepsis. The sanctuary said it hopes to have the full results of Phill's necropsy showing his exact cause of death within the next couple weeks. Iowa House bill would ban abortion medications in the state

DES MOINES, Iowa — A bill has been introduced in the Iowa house that would ban abortion medications in the state. Representative Jeff Shipley, a Republican representing District 87, introduced HF 423 on Monday. The bill would make it illegal 'for any person to manufacture, distribute, prescribe, dispense, sell, or transfer' so-called abortifacient drugs, like mifepristone, in the state. Anyone who violates the law would be guilty of a class C felony, which would result in a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of at least $1,370 up to $13,660. The bill does not lay out civil or criminal liability for woman who use abortion medications. The bill has been referred to the Health and Human Services Committee. Another bill regarding abortion was also introduced on Monday. HSB 186 would require all health facilities where abortions are performed to display signage that would outline the effectiveness of abortion medications. What the new Real ID will & won't do, and where & how to get it The bill states the signs should say 'recent developing research has indicated that a medication abortion utilizing an abortion-inducing drug is not always effective in ending a pregnancy. It may be possible to avoid, cease, or even to reverse the intended effects of a medication abortion that utilizes an abortion-inducing drug. Please consult with a health care professional immediately.' Claims have been made that medication abortions can be reversed using high amounts of progesterone; however, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as well as the Center for Disease Control, say medication abortion reversal is not supported by science, and doesn't meet clinical standards. Medication abortions are also known to be over 90% effective and safe, according to the ACOG, FDA, and other authorities. HSB 186 would also require physicians performing medication abortions to inform the patient of the side effects and the controversial treatment of medication abortion reversal, and would require written consent from the patient. A Health and Human Services subcommittee meeting for HSB 186 has been scheduled for February 25 at 12 p.m. in room 19 at the Iowa State Captiol. Record number of vehicles crashed into Iowa snowplows in Wednesday's storm

IOWA — The Iowa Department of Transportation announced on Friday that a record number of vehicles crashed into their snowplows during Wednesday's storm. According to the DOT, a total of 15 plows were hit — a one-day record for equipment strikes during winter. The previous one-day record was set in 2024 when nine plows were hit. The Iowa State Patrol responded to several of these crashes and shared photos of the crash scenes on Facebook. Since the start of the snow season, 25 snowplows have been hit by vehicles, the DOT said. The majority consisted of rear-end collisions and sideswipes on interstates and U.S. and state highways. So your car is in the ditch; what now? With more snow on the way the DOT is reminding motorists to drive safely around snowplows. 'Working plows travel 10 to 35 miles per hour and create a cloud of snow that impacts visibility. We're seeing drivers approach these plumes without reducing their speeds,' Craig Bargfrede, winter operations manager, said in a statement. 'With more systems on the way today, tomorrow, and next week, we need drivers to remember that we are sharing the road to clear the way for them, but we need cooperation and more cautious driving.' The DOT has provided the following tips for drivers to prevent crashing into a plow: Don't crowd the plow Never pass on the shoulder-side of a plow Watch for wing blades Don't tailgate or stop too close behind snowplows Don't travel beside a plow for long periods Move as far away from the centerline of the pavement Allow plenty of room if passing Use your headlights You can stay up-to-date on the latest weather forecast at this link.
