Tired of pulling weeds? Grow these 7 ground cover plants to naturally prevent weed growth in your garden
Gardeners often struggle to maintain a neat and weed-free yard. Weeds can sprout in unwanted areas such as walkways, flower beds, and lawns, making garden upkeep a constant battle. Fortunately, there is a natural and low-maintenance solution: ground cover plants. These low-growing plants spread across the soil, creating a living mulch that helps suppress weeds by blocking sunlight and reducing the space available for weeds to grow. In addition to being effective weed deterrents, ground covers can enhance the beauty of your garden and improve soil health. Here are seven top ground cover plants that can help keep your garden weed-free. Grow these 7 ground cover plants to prevent weeds and save time Creeping Phlox Creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata) offers a colorful and fragrant option for ground coverage. It forms a dense mat that shades the soil, preventing weed seeds from germinating. In spring, it bursts into vibrant blooms that attract pollinators. Although young plants require regular watering, established phlox is relatively drought-tolerant and continues to provide coverage with its needle-like green foliage throughout the year. Creeping Juniper Creeping Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis), also known as Blue Rug Juniper, is a hardy evergreen that spreads quickly across slopes and rocky areas. Its dense, feathery foliage not only provides year-round color but also prevents weed growth and helps control soil erosion. This plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and requires minimal maintenance. Light pruning in spring helps it maintain shape and health. Ground Clover Clover has become increasingly popular as a lawn alternative due to its eco-friendliness and ease of care. This soft, green foliage spreads quickly and can outcompete many common weeds. Clover enriches the soil by fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere, which supports the growth of surrounding plants. It thrives in various climates and doesn't require regular mowing or fertilizing, making it a great choice for low-maintenance landscapes. It can be planted alone or combined with traditional turf grasses to enhance durability. Stonecrop (Sedum) Stonecrop, or Sedum, is a low-growing succulent that spreads efficiently across dry ground. Its dense foliage comes in various shapes and colors, offering aesthetic variety while suppressing weeds. Stonecrop is particularly suitable for sunny spots with well-drained soil and is ideal for walkways or rock gardens. Its low water needs and mat-forming growth make it a dependable weed deterrent. Creeping Thyme Creeping Thyme is both practical and fragrant. This tough, drought-tolerant plant thrives in full sun and can withstand light foot traffic. Its dense, low-growing nature forms a living carpet that prevents weed growth. Creeping Thyme also releases natural chemicals (allelopathy) that inhibit weed seed germination. It's ideal for pathways and rock gardens and adds a splash of color with its tiny purple or pink flowers during bloom season. Irish Moss Irish Moss (Sagina subulata) is a soft, cushiony ground cover that thrives in moist, shady areas. Its tiny green leaves form a thick mat that helps prevent weed emergence. In spring and summer, it produces delicate white flowers that add charm to garden borders or spaces between stepping stones. Regular watering or misting is recommended during dry spells to maintain its lush appearance. Creeping Jenny Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia) is known for its fast-growing, trailing stems adorned with small green leaves and bright yellow flowers. It adapts well to different light conditions, as long as the soil remains moist. Its quick spread makes it effective at covering bare ground and deterring weed growth. Creeping Jenny is especially useful along borders or near walkways, where its trailing habit can add a touch of wild beauty. Incorporating any of these ground cover plants into your garden can help reduce the time and effort needed to manage weeds. Whether you prefer flowering varieties or evergreen mats, there's a ground cover option suited to your garden's needs and growing conditions. April's Pink Moon. Date, timing and what to know about the micromoon this weekend
The full moon will illuminate Michigan skies Saturday night, but it may not be as impressive as other full moons in 2025. The Pink Moon that rises Saturday will be a "micromoon" and look smaller than average as the satellite reaches its farthest point from Earth in its orbit, said. Here's what to know about the Pink Moon. The Pink Moon, April's full moon, will reach peak illumination April 12. The previous full moon was March's Worm Moon, which featured a total lunar eclipse. Clear skies will ensure optimal viewing, so keep an eye on the weather forecast. The full moon will peak in the evening at 8:22 p.m. How did the Pink Moon get its name? The name Pink Moon comes from pink wildflowers, Phlox subulata or moss phlox, that bloom during the season, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. You may have noticed the moon will occasionally take on a dramatic shade of orange or red in the night sky. That's because of how sunlight strikes the moon's surface after passing through the atmosphere. When the moon moves into the inner part of Earth's shadow, or umbra, according to NASA, some of the sunlight entering Earth's skies scatters before reaching the moon's surface. Colors with shorter wavelengths, such as blues and violets, scatter more easily than colors with longer wavelengths, which include red and orange. No, the Pink Moon is a micromoon. A micromoon occurs when a full moon aligns with the apogee of its orbit, the farthest point in the moon's orbit from Earth, NASA said. The Flower Moon will peak May 12, 2025. Poetry Day Ireland 2025: Duplex by Stuart Barnes
As part of Poetry Day Ireland 2025, twelve poems have been selected following a national call out to respond to this year's theme, May Day - read Duplex by Stuart Barnes below. Duplex Cleft phlox (Phlox bifida) In spring I fly open and burn pale purple, petal-edges curving like C clef. Curve over pebbles, my little C clef I sing to the skipper (which flocks, which flocks), icing for the skipper (Which phlox? Which phlox?), explosion for root rot, powdery mildew. My taproot powders erosion's eye. Still, you log and you crop and you dam and you mine. You log and you crop———I damn you to mine my oval emerald almanac. My emeralds go across fall———the knack outrages you like the cocklebur's sting. I'm outrageously bright and bursting to fly open in spring and burn pale purple. Clear skies for ‘pink moon' in Denver: Here's why it won't actually be pink
DENVER (KDVR) — The 'pink moon' will be visible in Denver through Sunday, but it won't actually be pink like its name. Every full moon has a name. The full moon in April was coined the 'pink moon' due to the lunar month. Around April's full moon, Phlox subulata, a flower often called 'pink moss,' is in full bloom in eastern North America, which is why the full moon was named the pink moon, according to the Almanac. What is the April full moon called? So, the moon isn't actually pink, it's mainly referring to the flowers at the time. However, there will still be a full moon in Denver over the weekend that rises while the sun is setting, making for a sight to see on Saturday. Temperatures will be in the 80s on Saturday, and by the time the sun sets just after 7:30 p.m., it should still be comfy in the 70s, according to the Pinpoint Weather team. This will be when you can start seeing the pink moon, as it's full about an hour before it rises and should look big on the horizon as the sun sets. The official moonrise is at 7:38 p.m., and people can see the pink moon throughout the night, especially with the mainly clear forecast. Denver weather: First 80 degree day and nearing records Saturday The Pinpoint Weather team expects mainly clear skies with only a few clouds in the forecast. If you're looking to sit outside and enjoy the view, it will be the perfect temperature as it won't be too cool overnight. It will be in the mid to lower 70s once the sun sets, with a light breeze of 10 to 20 mph with gusts of up to 30 mph. Overnight, temperatures should drop to the upper 40s, so if you want to check out the moon in the overnight hours, you may want a jacket. If you miss the pink moon on Saturday, it will be visible into Sunday, although the Pinpoint Weather team said there will be more clouds in the forecast. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. April's full moon will be a pink ‘micromoon'
NEW YORK (PIX11) – Get ready to look up for a rare sight in the sky on Saturday. April's full moon, known as the Pink Moon, will be on display however, it may not be as visible as others. The spectacle will be the smallest moon of the year, known as the micromoon. Things To Do Around NYC The full moon will be most visible around 8:22 p.m. in New York, but it will appear smaller and dimmer than usual because the moon will be the furthest away from Earth in its orbit. April's Pink Moon gets its name from the pink-colored Phlox flower that's often in bloom around the same time as the full moon.
