Cricket SA's Pholetsi Moseki honours the ‘true heroes' of Proteas cricket
Cricket SA's Pholetsi Moseki honoured community coaches and celebrated the Proteas' World Test Championship victory at the KFC mini cricket seminar in Polokwane, emphasising the importance of grassroots development and the game's origins. Picture: Sydney Mahlangu/BackpagePix Cricket SA chief executive Pholetsi Moseki said the origins of the game were just as important as winning trophies. With Proteas stars like Rassie van der Dussen , Tumi Sekhukhune and Lizaad Williams in attendance, the seminar forms a vital cog in the development of cricket in the country. The aim of the event is to bring in all the coaches from all the regions of South Africa to co-ordinate its efforts on an annual basis. While much of the focus has been on the Proteas ' World Test Championship ( WTC ) victory, Cricket SA is also ensuring those gains are not lost with the hosting of the KFC mini cricket seminar in Polokwane. Celebrating Superheroes: Moseki Highlights the Impact of Community Coaches and the Proteas' WTC Victory 'This is to celebrate superheroes. You know it always humbles me coming here and seeing the amazing people that are really responsible for the lifeblood of our mass participation program,' said Moseki. 'It's really to celebrate them and basically just to give them that extra energy to continue doing this amazing work that they do at the community level.' 'In our pipeline program, the coaches interact with kids at a very young age. Normally, we always speak about the Proteas, but remember you don't have to be a Protea, not a lot of them would be Proteas, but it does create lifelong fans for the game. But also over and above that, create good citizens for the country that we desperately need.' As for the Proteas victory in the WTC final, Moseki said he knew such a significant achievement had been coming. 'I always knew that it was just around the corner, but I think it was quite important that we as a country finally get that monkey off our back. 'After this, I'm quite excited with what the future holds for the game, both in the Proteas women and the Proteas men.' @Michael_Sherman IOL Sport

Proteas move up in Test rankings after famous win
The Proteas famously secured the ICC World Test Championship at Lord's on Saturday, ending a 27-year wait for ICC success in a final. The title-winning team and management staff will be returning to South Africa on Wednesday 18 June, at 09:25, and there is certainly plenty of reason to celebrate. Besides claiming the Test tile, the Proteas have now also jumped ahead of England into second place on the world Test rankings. South Africa now have 114 rating points, and although they are still nine points adrift of first-placed Australia, that will certainly not be of massive concern after their incredible success against that exact team in the World Test Championship. 'I can't think of a team more deserving of this WTC Mace. This team has displayed remarkable tenacity and strength over the past two years,' Moseki noted. 'This occasion holds immense significance in the world of sport and cricket. It is a tribute not only to the current squad, but also to those who paved the way before them.' CSA Director of National Teams and High Performance Enoch Nkwe commended the team for their unwavering commitment. South Africa's Heinrich Klaasen retires from international cricket
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Big-hitting South Africa wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen announced his retirement from international cricket Monday to spend more time with his family. Klaasen's decision comes as a surprise given his importance to South Africa and impact in franchise leagues around the world. It comes just less than a year after he was South Africa's top scorer in its loss to India in the T20 World Cup final. 'It took me a long time to decide what's best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with,' Klaasen said, adding that he was looking forward to more time with his family. The 33-year-old Klaasen has played 122 games for South Africa across all formats but in April he was left off South Africa's list of players on central contracts for 2025 and 2026. Cricket South Africa said at the time that talks on his future were ongoing. Klaasen had previously retired from test cricket last year after having played four career tests for South Africa. 'Heinrich has been a fantastic ambassador for South African cricket, both on and off the field. His performances in the green and gold have brought joy to many South Africans, and his legacy will undoubtedly inspire the next generation,' Cricket South Africa chief executive Pholetsi Moseki said in a statement Monday. 'We thank him for his contributions over the years and wish him everything of the best for the future.' South Africa men's team to visit Namibia for T20 match in October
The South Africa men's senior team will play a T20 match against Namibia at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek later this year, the cricketing boards of the countries announced on Tuesday. The contest will also mark the opening of the Namibia Cricket Ground, a major step forward for the country, which is gearing up to host World Cup games. The venue is set to host matches in both the 2026 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup and the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup (jointly-hosted by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe). 'As a fellow African cricketing nation and the host of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, we are proud to support the official opening of this new stadium which will be one of the host venues of the tournament,' said Pholetsi Moseki, Cricket South Africa's Chief Executive Officer. Proteas to face Namibia for the first time in October
Namibia will face South Africa for the first time in a one-off T20 International in Windhoek, in October. The match will be played at the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground (NCG) on 11 October. It will be the first match at the newly renovated venue which will host matches in the Under-19 World Cup next year and the senior men's event in 2027. Namibia and Zimbabwe will be joint hosts for that tournament alongside SA. 'We are honoured to be part of this historic occasion. Namibia are a competitive side, and this fixture reflects the growing strength of cricket on the continent,' said Cricket SA's CEO, Pholetsi Moseki. 'As a fellow African cricketing nation and the host of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, we are proud to support the official opening of this new cricket ground which will be one of the host venues of the tournament.' Moseki's counterpart at Cricket Namibia, Johan Muller thanked CSA for agreeing to play the fixture. 'The new FNB NCG has been a dream for the last four years and has finally materialised. A match against our neighbours, and one of the top cricketing countries in the world, is the perfect way to open this world class facility,' said Muller. The match adds to what is already a heavy schedule for the Proteas this year. After next month's World Test Championship final at Lord's they head to Zimbabwe at end of June to play two Tests and in a triangular T2o series with the host nation and New Zealand. Then there are trips to England and Australia for a limited overs series's in August and September and after the clash in Windhoek, SA heads to Pakistan and India for tours involving, Tests, ODIs and T20 matches. They play their last fixture in India on December 19 and a week later most of the players will be involved in the SA20, which starts on Boxing Day. There are no home Tests scheduled for the 2025/26 season and the men's team will on play in five T20 Internationals against the West Indies next January on SA soil, before heading to India for the T20 World Cup.
