CenterPoint Energy uses new tech to detect methane leaks in Shreveport
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – A natural gas leak can have severe consequences if not recognized quickly and accurately and CenterPoint Energy says they're continuing to deploy new and advanced technology to detect methane in the air.
According to press release from CenterPoint Energy, they are deploying additional Picarro Advanced Mobile Leak Detection Systems. CenterPoint says the state-of-the-art vehicle-mounted technology allows their crews to find and fix potential natural gas leaks faster, enhancing system safety.

The Picarro systems are in use throughout Louisiana, including Shreveport. CenterPoint says the system is 1,000 more times sensitive than traditional leak detection methods due to it identifying methane emissions at parts per billion (PPB) levels rather than parts per million (PPM). CenterPoint says it allows for problems to be identified sooner and fixed more quickly.
'This technology allows us to detect potential leaks with greater precision and speed, strengthening the safety of our system and is one of the many ways that we're investing in keeping natural gas in the pipe and out of the air,' said Richard Leger, CenterPoint's Senior Vice President, Natural Gas Business. 'We're continuing to advance innovative solutions to provide safe, reliable service that benefits our customers and the communities we're privileged to serve.'
