Russell and Kailey Dickerson Share the Marriage and Life Advice That Keeps Them Grounded
Russell Dickerson might be on track to become one of the most recognizable faces of country music thanks to his chart-topping song of the summer, 'Happen to Me,' but at his core, the 38-year-old singer is a down-to-earth family man who knows what his priorities are. At the tip-top of the list? His wife, Kailey, and their two boys, Remington (4) and Radford (1). As much as we love to see all of Russell's Instagram and TikTok posts showcasing his larger-than-life personality and adorable little family, we wanted to go straight to the source to discover his best life advice and how the cute couple keeps the spark alive, especially amid touring. Ahead, learn how Russell and Kailey prioritize their relationship at home and on the road, plus a key life lesson Russell thinks everyone could benefit from learning. The second leg of the Russell Dickerson Russell Mania Tour kicked off on June 5, 2025, in New York City at Pier 17—a 'big boy venue' on Russell's growing list of dream places to perform. To celebrate the milestone moment, Kailey made sure not to miss it. This isn't the first time she's toured with her hubby, though. To keep their bond strong, Russell and Kailey aim to hit the road together pretty regularly. 'We've been out on the road together,' Russell tells Country Living. 'Where we usually bring our boys, we've been leaving them with the nanny for like two, three days at a time, so we really get quality time together—have a little coffee date, have a little dinner date, whatever it is. That's really been a huge part recently of prioritizing intentionality—just looking ahead a little bit so we can plan to not just all of a sudden realize that I'm gone for six days and she's at home with two boys alone.' Ask any couple and, chances are, they'll have more than a few inside quips to evoke laughter, love, and a feeling of safe, secure alignment within their relationship. For Russell and Kailey, it boils down to three simple words. 'One of the things we say is to 'Protect the mushy,'' Kailey reveals. 'When you lose the mushy, gushy things, your heart's starting to get a little hard to each other.' To prevent that from happening, Kailey and Russell began using these three little words as a reminder of their enduring commitment to each other. 'We started to be like, 'That wasn't very mushy,'' Kailey shares. 'Like if someone said something with a little bit of annoyance in their tone, or instead of being like, 'You said that mean,' it just disarms the situation. And it's like, 'Oh, my bad'—it just softens you.' Another thing that softens you, both in a relationship and in everyday life? Taking things less personally and remaining authentic all the while. 'You can't care what people think—that's step number one to me; I don't care what people say,' Russell says of how he's become the confident performer he is today. 'I can only be me, and it takes a while to learn that, you know, because in this industry, the more people that like you or the more people that think you're cool, the more successful you'll be. But I've just learned that when I am authentically, truly myself, that's when stuff starts connecting. That's when stuff starts really taking off.' It's in personally learning this lesson that Russell feels he's been able to soar to new heights for summer 2025. 'That's kind of the era that I've stepped into—instead of trying to be like the suave, smoldery, whatever; it's like, 'No, dude. I'm too old for that crap.' I'm a dad, goofy, silly, over the top, you know?' he remarks. 'And it's just like, you can hate it—just go ahead and swipe through. But it's turned out that, I guess, not that many people do.' Considering 'Happen to Me' has been streamed over 33 million times since its debut in late February, and the song has been used in countless TikToks and Reels, the message is loud and clear: There's something so refreshing about being goofy, carefree, and not taking life too seriously. Thanks for the reminder, Russell! In the meantime, mark your calendars: Even more Russell magic is headed our way. On June 6, the 'Love You Like I Used To' singer announced his fourth studio album, Famous Back Home, is dropping on Friday, August 22.
