Gqeberha truck driver executed in cold-blooded hijacking

Two armed suspects shot and killed a 63-year-old truck driver during a hijacking on the R75 near Gqeberha early Wednesday morning, 22 May 2025. According to Algoafm , the attackers ambushed the man shortly after 6:00 as he drove toward Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape. A vehicle pulled in front of his truck, forcing him to stop. The suspects jumped out, confronted him, and a scuffle broke out. During the altercation, one of the suspects opened fire, fatally wounding the driver. The hijackers fled in the truck but later abandoned it on Chelsea Road, between Kwamagxaki and Kojana Street, Gqeberha. They made off with only a cellphone. Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects and are calling on anyone with information to come forward. Two gunmen shot and killed a 53-year-old emergency worker outside a shop in Jansenville on Sunday night, prompting Eastern Cape police to launch a manhunt. Police responded to gunfire at the corner of Bridge and Main streets around 19:40 on 18 May. When officers arrived, they found the victim, Piet Tieman, with gunshot wounds to his upper body. Eastern Cape police launched a manhunt for two suspects after they shot and killed a 53-year-old emergency worker outside a shop in Jansenville on Sunday evening. According to a police statement, officers responded to reports of gunfire at the corner of Bridge and Main streets, Jansenville, at about 19:40 on 18 May Upon arrival, they found the victim, identified as Piet Tieman, with fatal gunshot wounds to the upper body. Police opened a murder case and vowed to track down the killers. The Eastern Cape Health MEC slammed the attack, condemning the cold-blooded killing of a frontline emergency worker. The victim had just finished his shift and was still in uniform when the shooters struck. The MEC extended condolences to the victim's family, friends, and colleagues, and demanded that police leave no stone unturned to bring the killers to justice. Tieman served the department for over 25 years. Department Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo said since 2015, emergency services have experienced a series of attacks. In some instances, staff members are being robbed while on duty. The woman left the child alone at their Mzamba home on Sunday, 18 May, while she visited her boyfriend. When she returned the next day, she found the toddler unresponsive near the door. Instead of calling for help, she packed the child's body into a suitcase, took a taxi, and travelled about 30 kilometres to the police station. Motorists advised to avoid R75 towards Jansenville

Irate Jansenville residents brought traffic to a standstill on Tuesday morning, using a truck to block the R75. The residents were protesting against the murder of Piet Tieman, 53, who was gunned down outside a local shop on Sunday night. Tieman was found on the corners of Bridge and Main streets at about 7:40pm with gunshot wounds to his upper body. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said police have since launched a manhunt for two suspects believed to be behind the murder. 'At the scene, police found the body of a man with gunshot wounds in the upper body. 'He was later identified as Piet Tieman. A case of murder was opened for further investigation.' On Tuesday morning, Nkohli advised motorists to avoid the R75 towards Jansenville due to ongoing protest action. 'A truck has been used to block the road, and protesters have taken its keys. 'Authorities are working to resolve the situation, including arranging for spare keys from the trucking company. 'Alternative routes are strongly recommended until further notice. Police are on-site monitoring the situation.' The Herald
