Indianapolis high schooler faces two felonies after bringing stolen gun to school

A 19-year-old Pike High School student faces two felonies after school district police found a stolen gun in his backpack last week. The student, who attends school online, was scheduled to come to the northwest Indianapolis school's Freshman Center to use a lab at 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 23. A police report shows Metropolitan School District of Pike Township Police searched his bag at 2:15 p.m. Though it's unclear what led to the search, officers found a 9mm Glock handgun in the student's backpack. Its serial number revealed that it was stolen, MSD Pike police confirmed. The student was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail. The Marion County prosecutor filed final criminal charges on Wednesday. The gun was unloaded and the student didn't express any intent to use it against another person, an MSD Pike spokesperson told IndyStar. The high schooler faces one count of unlawful carrying of a handgun within 500 feet of school property and one count of possession of a firearm on school property. He's the second Pike High student to be charged after bringing a gun on campus this school year. On Nov. 21, 2024, a 15-year-old was arrested after school police found an automatic pistol in their bag. Ryan Murphy is the communities reporter for IndyStar.
