Mailbag: ‘Careless and heartless policies' are causing fear in our communities

I commend Patrice Apodaca's courage for using her column (July 27) to express objection to the meanness emanating from Washington, D.C., in particular the careless and heartless policies causing fear and upheaval in the United States' immigrant population. I do not understand the rationale for the indiscriminate, en masse sweeping up and exporting of people to countries where they have never been and/or putting them into concentration camps. I am particularly angry about this since the administration suggested that recipients of Medicaid can replace field workers. Next, they are to round up the homeless. Perhaps they will be sent to do farm labor. I empathize with Apodaca's concern that she will face retribution for speaking out. Dissent, a Constitutional right, now justifies retribution. Patrice Apodaca made good, intelligent points about the mean policies towards our marginalized citizens and residents. I do not understand how normal, kind, humane people can be devoted to our current leaders. Liz Swiertz NewmanCorona del Mar I want to thank Patrice Apodaca for her column 'Entering the Age of Meanness' published July 27, and the Pilot for publishing it, as well as the letters by Lorraine Gayer and Denny Freidenrich on that day. My wish is that everyone, including our president, would follow their example. Mary Ellen GoddardCosta Mesa After reading Mr. Colin Martinez Longmore's letter, titled 'The Diocese of Orange must not remain silent about ICE raids' we were disappointed about its erroneous assertions. To that end, as a pillar of Orange County faith, the Diocese of Orange would like to update the community about our comprehensive actions taken in response to the recent federal immigration enforcement. Because based on Mr. Longmore's letter, clearly some are unaware of everything we are doing. We would challenge Mr. Longmore and others to visit and witness the good work that has been accomplished and not rely on hearsay and innuendo. Our approach is nuanced, practical and pastoral, rooted in Catholic social teachings while also supporting the rule of law. It may not be apropos to catchy sound bites, social media divisiveness or alleviate all concerns, but we stand by our actions and commitments. In early June, we aggressively called for immigration reform (which has not happened in some four decades) while also advocating for peaceful protest that avoids our most violent instincts. It was anything but vague. Since then, we have fostered what we pray are beacons of light in dark times. While Mass attendance was initially down following the immigration enforcement, it has since returned to near-normal levels. Rather than give a dispensation from attending Sunday Mass, we encouraged our priests to celebrate Mass in the homes of those living in fear or ensure ministers bring Holy Communion to them. We never abandoned them in their time of need; instead, we offered the hope that comes from Christ. Should immigration enforcement occur at one of our places of worship — which it currently has not — our Catholic communities have received resource packets with 'know your rights' documentation and contact information for trusted legal and advocacy organizations. We recently hosted an internal seminar by our legal counsel on these issues. For the faithful facing immigration court, we send priests and deacons, offering spiritual support and a prayerful presence. This includes Bishop Kevin Vann, who attended the bond hearing of Narciso Barranco, the Tustin father of three Marines who endured a violent arrest while at a landscaping job. These actions and more exemplify the Catholic Church's pastoral care. They show how we are active and present in our communities, and they highlight our commitment to stand with our friends and families in faith, today and always. Downtown Bolton Patio Pilot is opening doors for businesses involved

The Town of Caledon has launched its seasonal patio pilot program in Downtown Bolton. The pilot, running from July 28 to October 3, 2025, was created to support small businesses and enhance the downtown experience. Eric Lucic, Commissioner of Planning and Development, said the idea for the patio pilot came directly from feedback they received during community engagement in 2024. Residents and businesses, he said, told them they wanted to see more seasonal patios, more public gathering space, and a more walkable, lively downtown. 'This pilot gives us a chance to test those ideas in a real-world setting, gather feedback, and better understand what works for Bolton before making any decisions,' says Lucic. They believe the Downtown Bolton Patio Pilot will bring new energy and foot traffic to the core of downtown. 'It's an opportunity to reimagine how public space can be used to prioritize people, gathering, and local experiences. By enhancing the pedestrian environment and creating space for patios and cafés, we're supporting small businesses, encouraging tourism, and creating a more vibrant, livable downtown,' he says. There are currently two businesses involved in the patio pilot: Wine Spot and Blissfully Baked x The Little Almond. For Wine Spot, the patio brings back an element that they had during COVID. They originally had a temporary patio in the back of their restaurant. 'We think it's a fantastic way to bring more people to downtown Bolton and to increase pedestrians. The more pedestrians, the better it is for all businesses down there, so as soon as the application came out this year, we filled it out immediately, and we're really excited to see it come together so quickly this summer,' shared Kimberly Medeiros, co-owner of Wine Spot. She shared they have been excited for the pilot since the economic survey for downtown Bolton. Medeiros says they're excited for people to experience Downtown Bolton in a different way. 'We want to see a great vibrant downtown,' she says. Blissfully Baked x The Little Almond is using the pilot to help expand their accessibility. The cozy café is located on the lower floor, and co-owners Taylor Arrowsmith and Shaina Lindeyer said the patio pilot allows their customers another option as opposed to climbing down the stairs to enter their café. 'It's nice that they can still have the treat. We just take their order upstairs and then we bring it up to them; it's nice that they have a place to sit outside now,' said Lindeyer. They are also looking forward to another aspect of the pilot, the opportunity for more people to enjoy their outdoor space, and become more aware of their business. Since they are located downstairs, some people say they didn't even know they were there and wish they had found them sooner. 'But now with the patio you literally run into us now because we're on the street. So, I feel like it might also help grab more people's attention toward us,' laughed Arrowsmith. Walkway removal will begin on October 4, 2025; until then residents can soak up the sun with these new patios. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. Interview: Jo Jung-suk gets personal in his latest role

One of Korea's most beloved actors returns with a zombie flick that had him reflecting on being a father, holding back tears Jo Jung-suk has, in recent years, built a career on beating the odds. His 2019 disaster comedy "Exit," made on a modest budget, became that year's breakout hit with 9.4 million viewers. Even more impressive was last year's cross-dressing satire "Pilot," which drew 4.7 million admissions in a brutal post-pandemic market where even big-budget blockbusters were falling flat. Now he's back with "My Daughter is a Zombie," a family-friendly zombie comedy that sounds like a tough sell — until you remember who's leading it. 'Another summer release — honestly, I must have some weird luck with this season,' Jo says with a grin, seated at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, central Seoul. He's referring to his unofficial title as Korean cinema's 'man of the summer,' a streak he accepts with humility. 'I don't choose the dates, but it's somehow worked out. I'm grateful.' Based on a popular webtoon, the film follows Jung-hwan, a zookeeper whose teenage daughter Su-ah is infected during a zombie outbreak. Rather than hand her over to the authorities, he escapes to his rural hometown and begins re-training her like one of his wild animals. It's the kind of high-concept premise that could easily veer into silliness or melodrama, but Jo saw something else in it. 'The beauty of the film is that sadness and humor coexist,' he says. 'Even in this nightmare situation — your own daughter turning into a zombie — there are these odd moments of wit. We didn't have to force the comedy; the situation just brought it out naturally.' The role struck a personal chord for Jo, who has a 6-year-old daughter. 'The timing was perfect,' he says. 'I was already settling into being a dad, and the script just lined up with where I was in life. Every time I looked at Yu-ri (Choi Yu-ri, who plays Su-ah), I couldn't help but picture my own daughter.' Some of the more emotionally charged scenes hit harder than expected. 'There's one moment where Jung-hwan has to consider whether to put Su-ah down,' he recalls. He pauses for a beat. Even now, the memory seems to stay with him. 'Sometimes on set, you're digging to find the emotion. This time, it was the opposite — I had to figure out how much to hold back.' When the conversation shifts to his broader approach to comedy — especially given his string of recent hits — Jo pushes back on the idea of having a set formula. 'People talk about the so-called 'Jo Jung-suk-style comedy' like it's a thing,' he says. 'But I honestly have no idea what that's supposed to mean. I just believe in the script. If something's funny on the page, our job is to play the moment truthfully. That's it.' He expands on that thought: 'The funniest stuff happens when you're not aiming for a punchline. It's about timing, chemistry, that subtle back-and-forth between the cast. That's really all an actor can control.' Still, there's something about Jo that clearly keeps audiences coming back — an easygoing, feel-good charisma that feels unmistakably his. What's behind it? 'I seriously have no clue,' he insists with a laugh. 'Everyone's got their own way of doing things — it's not like one's better than the other.' Pressed a little further, he finally offers a metaphor. 'If I had to describe it … definitely not spicy. Maybe tender? Mild?' He pauses, then adds, 'Like Pyongyang naengmyeon. How's that for a headline?' Perhaps Jo's onto something. Much like the cold noodle dish, his charm has a way of sneaking up on you — a subtle, understated flavor that sticks with you. Whatever the secret ingredient is, it's clearly something fans can't seem to get enough of.

Something 'fishy' behind Dhankhar's resignation: Sachin Pilot

Senior Congress leader and party General Secretary Sachin Pilot on Thursday expressed doubts over the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as vice president saying there was something "fishy" behind it. "The vice president holds the second-highest constitutional position in the country. The BJP and the Central government have consistently misused constitutional posts and institutions," Pilot told reporters in Tonk. Lulutox Undo Regarding the 'anti-corruption' padyatra led by independent candidate Naresh Meena , Pilot acknowledged that everyone has the right to advocate for their rights. Meena had contested bypolls from the Deoli-Uniara assembly constituency in the Tonk district last year and was arrested for slapping a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). He was granted bail by the Rajasthan High Court a few days ago. Live Events "It is good that the youth are speaking up, but do the leaders sitting in Jaipur and Delhi care about them?" Pilot questioned. He further asserted that in a democracy, it is better for people to express their views peacefully and with goodwill. "Those who talk about the youth should give them their full rights and work for them. The Prime Minister does not have time for this because he is too busy travelling abroad," Pilot added. Targeting the BJP government led by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma in Rajasthan, Pilot alleged that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated and that there is a lack of governance. "The real issue is that the government has lost control over law and order. All claims regarding jobs and development are proving to be hollow," Pilot claimed. Meanwhile, the Congress has been demanding a "dignified farewell" for Dhankhar, who remained in office for three years. The party has also been alleging that Dhankhar was "forced" to resign after he accepted a notice signed by Opposition MPs to remove Justice Yashwant Varma , from whose residence charred wads of currency notes were recovered a few months ago.
