Kerala aiming to achieve ‘net zero emission' target by 2050: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While India aims to achieve the target of 'net zero emission' by 2070, Kerala is planning to achieve the objective by 2050 itself thanks to its ongoing campaign named 'Net Zero Carbon Keralam Janangalioode', Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said. In an article on the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, Pinarayi said efforts to achieve the goal of 'Carbon Neutral Kerala' or net zero emission were being carried out with people's participation. He said a total of 10 institutions have already achieved the target. He reminded that for the sustenance of the ecosystem, forests and its flora and fauna should be protected. 'The disappearance of green cover in Kerala that is undergoing rapid urbanisation is a matter of concern,' Pinarayi said. He added that June 5 would mark the launch of the project named 'Oru Thai Nadaam' by the state to plant one crore saplings. People from a wide cross-section of society will participate in the campaign that will end on September 30. Pinarayi exhorted people of the state to adopt an environment- friendly lifestyle to create a better tomorrow for the future generation. He reminded that the message of 'environmental politics' should reach political, social and cultural organisations in the state.

Academic master plan by June 15, says CM Pinarayi

ALAPPUZHA: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday instructed all schools to complete an academic master plan by June 15 and said efforts were on to bring the entire school system under a unified structure. Speaking after inaugurating the state-level school reopening (Praveshanotsavam) at Kalavoor Government Higher Secondary School in Alappuzha, the CM said significant changes will be made in the methods of evaluation. 'In addition to raising academic standards, students' mental well-being will be a core focus. The government will stand with students in every aspect of their educational journey,' Pinarayi said. Reflecting on the state's progress, he said that in 2016, nearly 5 lakh students had left public schools and over 1,000 institutions were closed due to poor enrolment. Over the past nine years, the state has invested Rs 5,000 crore to revolutionise public education by introducing smart classrooms, infrastructure upgrades and student-centric policies, marking a new chapter in Kerala's educational history, Pinarayi said. Declaring the new academic year as the 'Year of comprehensive quality improvement', the CM praised the early printing and distribution of textbooks before the start of the school year, calling it a historic achievement. He emphasised that the new educational approach should inspire joy through learning and promote values such as critical thinking, empathy and social responsibility.

CPM to name Nilambur bypoll candidate today; party shifts focus to consensus pick

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPM is set to announce its candidate for the Nilambur by-election on Friday. A state secretariat meeting will discuss potential candidates, and after consulting with party leadership in Malappuram, the official candidate will be revealed in Thiruvananthapuram. According to sources within the CPM, the leadership has carefully weighed its options. While there was initial support for nominating a CPM leader, the decision has shifted towards selecting a candidate who can garner broader consensus. This adjustment comes in light of the political upheaval within the UDF following P V Anvar's break from the Congress leadership. Initially, CPM state secretariat member M Swaraj was considered, but the party recognised the necessity of a candidate who appeals not only to leftist supporters but also to non-left and community voters. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the LDF is presently engaged in discussions on finalising its candidate for the Nilambur assembly by-election and the announcement will be made soon. Responding to queries about the bypoll at a press conference on Thursday, Pinarayi said the CPM-led front usually decides its candidates after the election is declared. When asked about Trinamool Congress leader P V Anvar, Pinarayi said the 'less said about him the better' as he has been rejected by all.

Kamal Haasan in heart of every Malayali: CM Pinarayi Vijayan

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It was a rare occasion when two legends, Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan and people's hero Pinarayi Vijayan, met. The occasion was the fourth anniversary of the LDF government organised by CPM-affiliated Secretariat Employees Association in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. The two shared cakes. Contrary to the usual practice of people watching a Kamal movie, this time around it was a role reversal. Kamal Haasan watched a documentary on the life of the CM- 'Pinarayi The Legend' and lauded him for his exemplary works for the state and common people. The CM termed Kamal Haasan as an individual who has a leftist mind. 'Kamal Haasan has proved that artists have a life beyond the art. He is in the heart of every Malayali,' Pinarayi said. During his speech, Kamal Haasan said that he is following leaders like Pinarayi Vijayan who has never backtracked in fear of criticism. 'Whichever the ideology may be, we are all comrades in serving the people. The fight against injustice is my responsibility,' he said. Earlier while inaugurating the programme, the CM said that if only the files are processed on time, the common people could get the true result of governance. 'The secretariat employees are the ones who are less corrupt. The processing of files in the secretariat has improved tremendously,' he said. The organisers had also invited actor Kamal Haasan who was in the city for the promotion of his latest film. CM also cut a cake and gave a piece to the actor to mark the anniversary celebration of the government. Speaking after the screening of the documentary, the CM said one is yet to know the amount of criticism the office-bearers of the organisation will have to bear from certain quarters. 'Some people will try to interpret the documentary. I have not evolved with my own ability. I am the product of my party. I could stand with the party at all times. The attack against me is because I was the symbol of the party and now the head of the government,' he added. Pinarayi also told the organisers that in the documentary his mother's name was given wrongly. 'My mother's name is Alakkatt Kalyani. It will be a cruel act against my mother,' he said. In the documentary it is said that Pinarayi had achieved what V S Achuthanandan could not do.

Nilambur by-election on June 19 to test P V Anvar's political survival, new Congress leadership

MALAPPURAM: By-election to the Nilambur assembly constituency would be held on June 19, the Election Commission has announced. Nominations can be filed till June 2. The results will be announced on June 23. While the bypoll is important for the LDF and UDF, it is especially crucial for P V Anvar, whose resignation necessitated the exercise. For it will not only be a test of the ex-MLA's influence over people, but also decide his political existence. Anvar, who won in 2021 with the LDF's backing, resigned from the seat after his relationship with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan soured following his tirade against the home department, the CM's political secretary P Sasi, ADGP Ajith Kumar and SP Sujith Das. He later joined the Trinamool Congress. Historically, Nilambur has not favoured the CPM. After K Kunjali, who won in 1965 and 1967, the CPM has not secured Nilambur on its own. Even T K Hamsa won in 1982 as an independent. Later, after the dominance of Aryadan Muhammad, the Left won in 2016 and in 2021 through Anvar, another independent. While Anvar played down his role in the bypoll by describing it as people's fight against Pinarayi, it is being seen as his struggle for survival. Anvar, who had initially set conditions for cooperating with the UDF, later surrendered unconditionally saying his only goal was to defeat Pinarayi. The UDF, however, has not taken a call on taking Anvar into its fold as there are reservations within the front over the matter. On his part, Anvar has tried to pose as the champion of the 'victims of the RSS-minded police's highhandedness against the Muslims', and also participated in protests against human-animal conflicts in Malappuram – a definite campaign point.
