Scholarship set up in memory of beloved Ariton coach

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — A scholarship has been set up in memory of a beloved Ariton coach who died at practice this year. The Taylor Polk Memorial Scholarship, established in partnership with the Pinebelt Foundation, will be awarded to a senior in each graduating class from Ariton starting in 2026. The Polk family is asking for donations from the community to help the scholarship thrive. The scholarship was set up to memorialize the life and work of Ariton coach Taylor Polk, who died in February of this year. Polk was at baseball practice when he suffered a heart issue while throwing soft toss with some players. While he was throwing, he immediately grabbed his chest and thought he was having a heart attack. His condition got worse and he passed away two days later. After Polk's death, the community came together to support his wife, Katie Knox, and his family. 'It is our hope that you will consider making a donation to this scholarship, no matter the amount, or simply praying for the success of the scholarship,' said Knox in a social media post regarding the scholarship. 'This community has shown up for us in so many ways since losing Taylor, and this is one way for us to give back.' Donations can be cash, checks, online, or even stocks. Checks can be made out to the Pinebelt Foundation at 1501 Adeline Street, Hattiesburg MS 39401. Stocks can be donated by calling 601-583-6180 and donations can be made online here.
