Scholarship set up in memory of beloved Ariton coach

Yahoo30-04-2025

DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) — A scholarship has been set up in memory of a beloved Ariton coach who died at practice this year.
The Taylor Polk Memorial Scholarship, established in partnership with the Pinebelt Foundation, will be awarded to a senior in each graduating class from Ariton starting in 2026.
The Polk family is asking for donations from the community to help the scholarship thrive.
The scholarship was set up to memorialize the life and work of Ariton coach Taylor Polk, who died in February of this year.
Polk was at baseball practice when he suffered a heart issue while throwing soft toss with some players. While he was throwing, he immediately grabbed his chest and thought he was having a heart attack. His condition got worse and he passed away two days later.
After Polk's death, the community came together to support his wife, Katie Knox, and his family.
'It is our hope that you will consider making a donation to this scholarship, no matter the amount, or simply praying for the success of the scholarship,' said Knox in a social media post regarding the scholarship. 'This community has shown up for us in so many ways since losing Taylor, and this is one way for us to give back.'
Donations can be cash, checks, online, or even stocks. Checks can be made out to the Pinebelt Foundation at 1501 Adeline Street, Hattiesburg MS 39401. Stocks can be donated by calling 601-583-6180 and donations can be made online here.

MSU target, 3-star DL Jermaine Polk commits to Rutgers following official visit

MSU target, 3-star DL Jermaine Polk commits to Rutgers following official visit One of the defensive lineman Michigan State is targeting in the 2026 class is off the board and heading to another Big Ten school. Jermaine Polk of Toledo, Ohio announced his commitment to Rutgers on Sunday afternoon. Polk took an official visit to Rutgers this weekend, which ultimately led to the Scarlet Knights sealing the deal with his commitment. Michigan State was one of five schools recently named a finalist for Polk, which didn't include Rutgers. Michigan State, Boston College, Iowa, Iowa State and Wisconsin were the five schools Polk named as his finalists in late May, but an offer from Rutgers this past week quickly changed his recruiting landscape, with the Scarlet Knights working fast to get him on campus and committed. Polk is a three-star prospect and ranks as the No. 73 defensive lineman in 247Sports' rankings for the 2026 class. He holds a recruiting rating of 88 on 247Sports as well. Michigan State landed their own defensive lineman prospect in the 2026 class, with Christopher Knauls Jr. committing to the Spartans following his official visit. So that commitment from Knauls eases the blow of Rutgers beating out Michigan State for Polk. Stefon Diggs caught working with struggling Patriots WR on sideline

Stefon Diggs caught working with struggling Patriots WR on sideline OTAs are a chance for veterans and rookies to get to know and learn from each other, and it appears that New England Patriots veteran receiver Stefon Diggs and second-year wideout Ja'Lynn Polk are doing just that. A video surfaced of Diggs working with Polk on the sidelines during an OTAs practice session. Polk, a second-round draft pick, is looking to bounce back after a disappointing rookie campaign. He recorded 12 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown last season. There are no guarantees that he'll even make the team with 12 receivers currently on the roster. It could be a huge help for the struggling young receiver to be working alongside and getting tips from a four-time Pro Bowl receiver in Diggs. There was hope that Diggs would be more than just an offensive weapon for the Patriots. At 31 years old, he's also the most experienced wide receiver on the roster. He could serve as a mentor on a roster loaded with receiver talent. Both Polk and Diggs were limited participants at OTAs due to injuries. However, Diggs is expected to be the top receiving option for quarterback Drake Maye when he's fully healthy. Polk has shown flashes of high-end potential at practice, but he hasn't been able to put it together on the field in games. Perhaps he can finally unlock his full potential by learning from a star player like Diggs. Follow Patriots Wire on Twitter and Facebook.

2nd rounders in 2nd year: 2025 outlook for Patriots WR Ja'Lynn Polk

2nd rounders in 2nd year: 2025 outlook for Patriots WR Ja'Lynn Polk Not every second-round draft pick finds immediate success in the NFL. That plain fact often obscures a player's initial evaluation in our society of instant gratification and immediate validation. Some are drafted with an eye for the future more than heavy usage in the present. That's the basis for our series focusing on the 2024 second-rounders who didn't get a chance to do a lot as rookies, for a variety of reasons. So far, we've covered: Cowboys EDGE Marshawn Kneeland Cardinals CB Max Melton Chiefs OL Kingsley Suamataia Lions CB Ennis Rakestraw Falcons DT Ruke Orhorhoro Next up is a player with a lot to prove in Year 2: Ja'Lynn Polk. The New England Patriots selected Polk with the No. 37 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after a strong career playing wide receiver at Washington (and Texas Tech prior). The 6-foot-1, 203-pound Polk offered impressive size and exceptional ball tracking skills, performing very well as part of a talented WR ensemble for the Huskies. The Patriots liked what they saw from Polk in training camp and preseason to give him chances to play extensively early on. He started five of the first six games, primarily operating outside but shifting into the slot for about 20 percent of his snaps. Polk struggled to get off press coverage, and his pedestrian speed didn't work as effectively in the NFL as it did in college. After getting 26 targets and hauling in just 10 of them for 84 yards in the first seven games, Polk missed Week 8 with a concussion. The Patriots effectively moved on from Polk thereafter; Polk had just two catches on seven targets in the remainder of his rookie season. Based on how New England approached their offseason, that move away from Polk might persist--at least in 2025. The Patriots added free agent WRs Stefon Diggs and Mack Hollins, and both are above Polk on the Patriots depth chart. Hollins is a much bigger and more accomplished "big" receiver, while Diggs is a master route runner and dynamic Pro Bowl talent. The Patriots also drafted Washington State speedster Kyle Williams in the third round, adding to a receiver room that still has useful vet Kendrick Bourne and third-year Kayshon Boutte, who finished second on the team in WR targets a year ago. Polk figures to get chances to impress the new coaching staff headed by Mike Vrabel, but he's got real work to do to stay relevant in the Patriots' plans in 2025. Improving his release off the line and handling physicality would be a good place to start for Polk.
