David Beckham's anger at lack of ‘respect' after MLS rival's jibe

David Beckham has told Minnesota United to 'show a little respect' after they celebrated thrashing his star-studded Inter Miami team by calling them the 'Pink Phony Club'. Saturday's Major League Soccer game between the sides inflicted on Lionel Messi his worst defeat since moving to the United States as Miami lost 4-1 at a packed Allianz Field. Advertisement Minnesota, managed by former Manchester United coach Eric Ramsay, basked in the afterglow of that win on Instagram by taking aim at their opponents, whom Beckham co-founded in 2018 and who famously wear pink. One post featured an image of their own players celebrating a goal and featured a part of the MLS standings showing Minnesota in fifth, a point ahead of Beckham's side. The post was captioned 'Pink Phony Club' in a play on words on the Chappell Roan song Pink Pony Club. Beckham, the former Manchester United and England midfielder, responded to the post by writing: 'Show a little respect @mnufc be elegant in triumph.' In another jibe seemingly linked to the city of Minnesota's longer association with professional football down the years, a post featured a photograph of a giant banner and read: 'History over hype. Culture over cash.' The post was captioned: '49 years and counting'. Advertisement Beckham responded, saying 'respect over everything' in a comment featuring a pink heart emoji. Miami were formed only in 2020 and won the Leagues Cup in 2023 during Messi's first season in Florida. They topped the regular season standings last term to win the Supporters' Shield, only to bow out in the first round of the MLS play-offs to Atlanta United. Miami are fourth in the Eastern Conference and sixth in the overall table after losing to Minnesota, who are enjoying a fruitful second season under Ramsay. The 33-year-old left United for his current role in February last year and has recently been linked with the Southampton job. Advertisement Welsh coach Ramsay said after beating Miami: 'I think, for the club as a whole, that was really important. But certainly, for us as a team, to show that we can compete with the very best was really important for us. 'We're obviously in a good place at the moment but we've got to keep that going, we've got to keep working.' Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. After Inter Miami loss, Beckham beefs with Minnesota

Ah, David Beckham, the man that you are: soccer star, international heartthrob and…reply guy? State of spat: Minnesota United took to social media to drag Inter Miami after defeating the local powerhouse 4-1 on Saturday — and our favorite Brit soccer player (aside from Roy Kent, of AFC Richmond, of course) did not appreciate it! Zoom in: In an Instagram post Sunday, Minnesota captioned a photo "Pink Phony Club," seemingly alluding to Inter's pink color kits and Chappell Roan's hit song, "Pink Pony Club." No matter that the song is a nod to feeling comfortable in queer spaces and has zero connection to sports. Inter's owner, however, could not disregard what he interpreted as a dig, commenting on the post with a simple message: "Show a little respect, be elegant in triumph." Incredible. Even while angry, he is dignified! Then, Minnesota posted a second photo of a banner that reads "History Over Hype Culture Over Cash," with the words hype and cash in pink. Reality check: Beckham paid $25 million to get Inter Miami into MLS in 2014. Minnesota United FC was founded in 2015.

Beckham tells gloating US opponents to 'show respect'

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham has told Minnesota United to "show a little respect" after the Major League Soccer side celebrated victory by poking fun at the 'Pink Phony Club' on social media. The 4-1 defeat was the heaviest suffered by global star Lionel Messi since moving Stateside. Minnesota basked in the afterglow on social media, including taking aim at Miami with an Instagram post referencing their pink kit and Chappell Roan's song Pink Pony Club. "Pink Phony Club" read the caption on an image featuring a goal celebration and shot of the overall MLS standings with Minnesota in fifth, a point ahead of Miami. Irritated co-owner Beckham hit back in the comment section, saying: "Show a little respect @mnufc be elegant in triumph." The former Manchester United and England star also went onto comment on their next Instagram post, which was captioned "49 years and counting" with an image of a giant banner reading: "History over hype. Culture over cash." Beckham responded saying "respect over everything" in a comment featuring a pink heart emoji. There was also a banner in the crowd stating 'No biting allowed' in a reference to Miami's Luis Suarez's history of biting opponents. Miami were founded in 2018 and began playing two years later, with the side winning the Leagues Cup in 2023 during Messi's first season in Florida. Former England captain Beckham, who shot to fame with Manchester United before moving to Real Madrid and, later, Los Angeles Galaxy, was one of the driving forces behind Inter Miami's creation. 'Show a little respect': Beckham slams Minnesota United after disrespectful posts following 4-1 win against Inter Miami

'Show some respect': Beckham responds to Minnesota's online taunt. Image credits: File(AP) Heavy defeat sparks Beckham's reaction Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham publicly called out Minnesota United for a lack of sportsmanship after his side suffered a 4-1 defeat, the club's heaviest loss since Lionel Messi joined in July 2023. Following the match, Minnesota United's Instagram account posted a taunting caption: 'Pink Phony Club,' referencing both Inter Miami's pink kit and pop artist Chappell Roan's song Pink Pony Club. The post also included a screenshot showing Minnesota climbing above Miami in the MLS table. Beckham, who played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, and LA Galaxy before co-founding Inter Miami, commented under the post: 'Show a little respect, be elegant in triumph.' Minnesota, managed by Welsh coach Eric Ramsay , followed up with another jab, posting a fan banner reading 'History over hype, culture over cash,' with 'hype' and 'cash' highlighted in pink. Beckham responded again: 'Respect over everything.' Messi scores, but Miami exposed Despite a goal from Messi in the 48th minute, his fifth of the season, Inter Miami were thoroughly outplayed. Minnesota capitalized on weak defending to score four times, exposing vulnerabilities that coach Javier Mascherano said his side had prepared for but failed to counter. Miami played without forward Luis Suárez, who did not make the trip due to personal reasons, and without left winger Fafà Picault, who was ruled out shortly before the match due to illness. That left Messi floating in front of a five-man midfield without a natural striker. Bongokuhle Hlongwane opened the scoring in the 32nd minute after Carlos Harvey found him with a precise pass inside the box. On the stroke of halftime, Anthony Markanich made it 2-0 after a long throw from Michael Boxall was flicked on by Nicolas Romero. Messi briefly gave Miami hope after linking up with Jordi Alba to make it 2-1, but an own goal from Marcelo Weigandt in the 68th minute and a clinical finish from Robin Lod two minutes later sealed the result. Coach Mascherano admitted his side failed to execute their plan: 'It's a tough loss for us. We knew Minnesota could hurt us in this way, in transitions, on set pieces, and they hurt us in the way we had prepared for the game and that's what worries me the most,' Mascherano told reporters. 'If the players drop their levels, clearly the responsibility falls on me… All on me.' Stats tell a different story, but issues run deep Despite dominating 67% possession, outpassing Minnesota 723 to 262, and taking 10 shots to Minnesota's 8, Inter Miami failed to convert their control into goals. The result marks their fourth loss in five games across all competitions, during which they have conceded 14 goals. The defensive fragility and lack of a traditional striker proved decisive. The team's recent 4-1 win over New York Red Bulls now looks like a temporary respite rather than a turning point. Inter Miami, last year's Supporters' Shield winners, now sit fourth in the Eastern Conference with 21 points from 12 games (6 wins, 3 draws, 3 losses). They were also knocked out in the semi-finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup earlier this season. Wider MLS context Minnesota United's win lifts them above Inter Miami in the standings. They have been building a reputation under Eric Ramsay, and the performance against Miami adds weight to their campaign. Elsewhere in the league, the New York Red Bulls avenged their MLS Cup final loss with a stunning 7-0 win over defending champions LA Galaxy, who now sit bottom of the Western Conference with only three points from 12 games. In the Eastern Conference, FC Cincinnati lead the table following a 2-1 win over Austin. Columbus Crew remain unbeaten on the road after drawing 2-2 with Philadelphia Union, who dropped points late despite a goal from teenager Frankie Westfield. Current Eastern Conference Top 4 Standings: FC Cincinnati – 26 pts Columbus Crew – 23 pts Philadelphia Union – 22 pts Inter Miami – 21 pts
