Queens dogs stolen after bizarre botched robbery

What started as a robbery caper in Queens quickly turned into a dognapping disaster, cops said. A desperate dog lover is trying to track down his precious purloined pooches days after an armed thieves tried to rob him and his friend on a Queens street, but ended up swiping the man's pets. The 31-year-old victim managed to get away from the would-be captors, but the suspects got hold of the victim's phone — and the keys to his apartment. Hours later, the crooks let themselves into the victim's home, and walked off with about $6,000 worth of clothes — and two French bulldogs, cops said. 'I was thinking I was going to die,' the dog owner, who wished not to be named, told the Daily News. Police have released surveillance images of the two crooks in the hopes that someone recognizes them. The thieves did not know either the dog owner or his friend, but were trying to maximize their score by forcing one victim to reach out to the other, a police source with knowledge of the case said. The ordeal began Saturday along Crane St., a small, one-block-long stretch in Long Island City, when the two suspects approached the dog owner's 27-year-old friend, who was on a bike, and forced him into a car at gunpoint, cops said. After punching him several times, the crooks took his iPhone and about $800, then used the phone to text the dog owner, who the bike rider was heading over to meet. A short time later, the unsuspecting dog owner appeared. He was also forced into the car, where he was beaten and robbed. But he managed to escape, just as one of the robbers was trying to bind him with zip ties, he recalled. 'I grabbed the gun and started punching and fighting one of them,' he said about his ordeal. 'The other guy jumped into the car and we were all fighting for the gun. They were screaming, 'Shoot him! Shoot him!'' The dog owner managed to get out of the car and run across the street. 'They panicked and sped off,' he said. 'I dropped my phone and my keys.' As for his friend, he said the robbers later pushed him out of the car in Bedford-Stuyvesant. The dog owner went to his sister's house to decompress after the robbery. But by the time he got home, he realized he had been robbed again, he said. The thieves managed to figure out that the dog owner lived on the block where the robbery occurred and took something far more valuable to him than his phone. They took his two best friends. The thieves pretended to be delivering food in the building to get past the doorman as they made their way up to his apartment. They left with the dogs shortly before their victim returned home, the victim said. 'We just missed each other by minutes. They were caught on video,' the dog owner said. No arrests have been made. 'I find it difficult to talk about them because it makes me want to cry,' he added. 'I feel like I failed my dogs, I haven't been able to eat because I think of my dogs not being fed.' Gone are Cookie Monster, a 4-year-old male bulldog, and Pinky, a 3-year-old female. Their owner has been posting pictures on local streets and all across social media. 'I've been doing as much as I can,' he said. 'I just want my kids back.' Cops recovered surveillance images of the two suspects. One is described as between 20 and 25, around 5-foot-8 and about 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a Chicago Bulls cap, a black surgical mask and a black sweater. His partner is in his late 20s, around 6 feet tall and about 220 pounds. He was last seen wearing a gray baseball cap and a gray sweater. Anyone with information regarding their whereabouts is urged to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.

10-yr-old meets stem cell donor who helped him beat thalassemia

New Delhi: A poignant reunion unfolded on Tuesday as 10-year-old Pratham Tulsiyani, who triumphed over thalassemia after battling it for years, came face-to-face with his saviour. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The young boy from Bikaner met 35-year-old Rohit Lakhmani from Kanpur, whose stem cell donation gave him a new lease of life. The meeting was marked by profound gratitude and a deep connection that transcended verbal expression. Pratham regards Rohit not just as his saviour, but his "super hero" too, as he no longer requires blood transfusions and can now actively engage in cricket, an activity he previously found too exhausting. Lakhmani, employed as a pharmaceutical management consultant, enlisted with DKMS Foundation India after watching the film "The Sky is Pink", which depicts a family's struggles with their child's serious medical condition. DKMS Foundation India operates as a non-profit organisation dedicated to fighting blood cancer and related disorders. Thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder, causes insufficient haemoglobin production, resulting in anaemia, fatigue and serious health issues. Stem cell transplantation offers thalassemia patients a potential cure by replacing defective blood-forming cells with healthy ones from donors. Pratham's mother Pinky told TOI that he was diagnosed with thalassemia when he was seven months old. His symptoms included a white shining face and fever. Initial medical consultation indicated anaemia, but when conditions persisted, further testing revealed his 'thalassemia major' status. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The parents also discovered their 'thalassemia minor' condition during these tests. Pinky said she was unaware of their condition, especially since her two elder sons, now 22 and 20, were healthy. Pratham's father Vijay, a businessman, said his son endured regular blood transfusions early in life. They spent seven years searching for a suitable stem cell donor , maintaining their optimism. Their breakthrough came on Pinky's birthday in 2022, when the couple learned about a perfect match through DKMS Foundation India. Pinky called it her "best birthday present". "The stem cell transplant took place in Sept that year, with positive results," she said. Rohit said he was inspired by a film featuring information about DKMS and registered during the Covid-19 pandemic. After online registration and submitting a home swab kit, he was identified as Pratham's match eight months later. "Seeing Pratham smile in person was overwhelming," Rohit said after meeting him in Delhi. "I feel proud to have helped in this small but meaningful way." Dr Mithun Abraham Prakash, assistant professor, department of haematology, Christian Medical College, Vellore, who treated Pratham, said thalassemia management improves with early diagnosis and appropriate medical care. Dr Esha Kaul, director of hematology, hemato-oncology, BMT at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Vaishali, explained that while blood transfusions provide temporary relief, stem cell transplantation offers a permanent solution. She noted Pratham's blood group changed from A positive to O positive after the transplant. Patrick Paul, chairman, DKMS India, said their registry includes more than 2 lakh donors, with 185 successful stem cell donations. He said potential donors must be healthy adults aged 18-55. Registration involves completing a consent form and providing cheek swabs for HLA testing. Approved donors join an international database anonymously. Interested individuals can request home swab kits through the website to participate in the life-saving initiative.

HC acquits man after 19 yrs in jail for foster daughter's murder

Cutack: A 69-year-old man, who has been in prison for 19 years for the murder of his 19-year-old foster daughter in 2005, was acquitted by Orissa high court on Tuesday due to insufficient evidence . A division bench of Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo and Justice Chittaranjan Dash overturned Rajendra Jain's life sentence, imposed by a trial court in Jharsuguda, giving him the benefit of doubt since circumstantial evidence failed to conclusively establish his guilt. Rajendra, currently lodged in Sambalpur Circle Jail, was accused of killing Pinky by stabbing her multiple times when she was alone in the house at Gandhinagar in Belpahar, Jharsuguda district, on Dec 27, 2005. Additional sessions judge, Jharsuguda, A K Patnaik convicted him and handed him a life sentence on Nov 28, 2006. Pinky and her newly-wed husband was staying with Rajendra and Manju, her foster parents, when the incident happened. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads View Deals Undo Rajendra, who apparently fled the scene, was arrested after he surrendered at Brajrajnagar police station on Jan 2, 2006, and had since been in jail. He filed a jail criminal appeal (JCRLA) in the high court on Feb 24, 2007, but it never came up for hearing. In Sept 2023, advocate Bikash Chandra Parija was assigned by the high court legal services committee to represent Rajendra after it came to light that no one had appeared on his behalf. According to the bench, in a case based solely on circumstantial evidence, the chain of circumstances must be complete, each link must be established with clarity, and the entire sequence must point unerringly to the guilt of the appellant. "In the present case, the prosecution has failed to meet this threshold," the bench observed. It stated that the last seen theory was not established and the blood-stained trouser, allegedly recovered from the spot, was not proven to be one belonging to Rajendra. The court further observed that the motive remains speculative in light of post-mortem findings, which ruled out sexual assault, while the recovery of weapons was also doubtful. While directing Rajendra's immediate release unless he is required in connection with any other case, the bench noted that glaring gaps and inconsistencies rendered the prosecution's case insufficient to establish his guilt. "We are of the considered view that the prosecution has not been able to prove the charge against the appellant beyond all reasonable doubt, and the evidence on record falls short of the standard required to fasten criminal liability," the bench said. Jailer Santosh Barik said Rajendra would be released on Thursday. "He has some mental health issues. His family members have not come. We are figuring out how to go about his release," he said.

'I went through a lot': Pinky Girl reflects on her fallout with Bonang

Reality TV star and influencer Tebogo Mekgwe, popularly known as Pinky Girl, has finally broken her silence on the fallout with her famous cousin, media personality Bonang Matheba. The two were once one of Mzansi's most beloved cousin duos—travelling together, appearing side-by-side on Being Bonang , and serving all the cousin goals. But things took a turn when their relationship soured publicly, with jabs exchanged on social media. In January 2023, Bonang told her X followers that Pinky had allegedly been fired from her team for not being vaccinated. In a recent interview on Reason TV with Troy Malenge, Pinky Girl revealed what really happened between them. When asked directly about the fallout, she explained: 'There's nothing that happened. I went through a lot of emotions in 2023. As people, we grow and take on different responsibilities, so that's what I understand—whether it's family, relationships, or friendships. You don't have to judge or force things. People don't need to act a certain way just to get you—everyone has their own responsibilities.' She continued, 'So don't expect too much—just understand that we're all living our lives. Families have differences. I was brought up in my own family, and my cousin was brought up in hers. Yes, we're cousins, even like sisters, but our backgrounds are different.' Pinky Girl reflected on their childhood bond, saying, 'I grew up in Pretoria. Bonang and I met through visiting during school holidays, spending time together while growing up, and visiting my grandmother in Rustenberg. She'd come to visit us, and I'd go to her dad's in Mafikeng during the holidays. That's how we built our relationship as cousins.' But with time, things changed: 'Now we've grown up—she does her own thing, and I do mine. I have my own parents, and she has hers. So cousins are cousins—it's not like we do everything together. For me and her, it was always that understanding: I'm from Pretoria, and she's from her side.' In a moment of honesty, Pinky added, 'But now, there's no such thing as family—especially, you see it when you're growing up. It's not easy. People get busy, and you must remember your responsibility. We've got something different… whatever. And I don't know.' The Being Bonang star also shared that she had suffered personal loss, having lost her uncle, grandmother, and father, and had been focusing on healing from the grief. Addressing Bonang's claim that she was fired over a visa issue, Pinky clarified: 'The problem with the visa was that there was no communication earlier that we would apply for a visa. You cannot do a visa now… There was no communication that we will visa, so prepare a visa in the next 1–2 weeks.' According to the DJ, she would have appreciated better communication and more time to plan. Pinky also revealed that the trip was not complimentary, adding another layer to the misunderstanding.
