'I went through a lot': Pinky Girl reflects on her fallout with Bonang

Reality TV star and influencer Tebogo Mekgwe, popularly known as Pinky Girl, has finally broken her silence on the fallout with her famous cousin, media personality Bonang Matheba.
The two were once one of Mzansi's most beloved cousin duos—travelling together, appearing side-by-side on Being Bonang , and serving all the cousin goals. But things took a turn when their relationship soured publicly, with jabs exchanged on social media.
In January 2023, Bonang told her X followers that Pinky had allegedly been fired from her team for not being vaccinated. In a recent interview on Reason TV with Troy Malenge, Pinky Girl revealed what really happened between them.
When asked directly about the fallout, she explained:
'There's nothing that happened. I went through a lot of emotions in 2023. As people, we grow and take on different responsibilities, so that's what I understand—whether it's family, relationships, or friendships. You don't have to judge or force things. People don't need to act a certain way just to get you—everyone has their own responsibilities.'
She continued, 'So don't expect too much—just understand that we're all living our lives. Families have differences. I was brought up in my own family, and my cousin was brought up in hers. Yes, we're cousins, even like sisters, but our backgrounds are different.'
Pinky Girl reflected on their childhood bond, saying, 'I grew up in Pretoria. Bonang and I met through visiting during school holidays, spending time together while growing up, and visiting my grandmother in Rustenberg. She'd come to visit us, and I'd go to her dad's in Mafikeng during the holidays. That's how we built our relationship as cousins.'
But with time, things changed: 'Now we've grown up—she does her own thing, and I do mine. I have my own parents, and she has hers. So cousins are cousins—it's not like we do everything together. For me and her, it was always that understanding: I'm from Pretoria, and she's from her side.'
In a moment of honesty, Pinky added, 'But now, there's no such thing as family—especially, you see it when you're growing up. It's not easy. People get busy, and you must remember your responsibility. We've got something different… whatever. And I don't know.'
The Being Bonang star also shared that she had suffered personal loss, having lost her uncle, grandmother, and father, and had been focusing on healing from the grief.
Addressing Bonang's claim that she was fired over a visa issue, Pinky clarified: 'The problem with the visa was that there was no communication earlier that we would apply for a visa. You cannot do a visa now… There was no communication that we will visa, so prepare a visa in the next 1–2 weeks.'
According to the DJ, she would have appreciated better communication and more time to plan. Pinky also revealed that the trip was not complimentary, adding another layer to the misunderstanding.
DO YOU THINK THEY WILL EVER MEND THEIR RELATIONSHIP?

Bonang Matheba has raised eyebrows with a nod to EFF's 12th birthday celebrations. The media mogul was particularly joyful when the political party toasted their celebrations with her champagne beverage under the House of BNG label. Like many 'fighters', Bonang Matheba sent her well wishes to the EFF that celebrated their 12th birthday. The political party hosted its celebrations in Khayelitsha in Cape Town over the weekend. In pics posted on their X account, EFF toasted their anniversary with several bottles of the star's House of BNG champagne. Like the EFF, Bonang recently celebrated her own birthday. The businesswoman and media mogul turned 38 years old. Unlike previous years, the star hosted a low-key birthday dinner, celebrated by a handful of friends and family. Bonang Matheba's man whisks her to Japan, leaving breakup rumours in the dust

Bonang Matheba dismisses breakup speculation with a bold social media post. Image: Instagram/@bonang_m Media personality Bonang Matheba's 38th birthday celebration, which took place on June 25, was the talk of the town, and not just because of her stunning looks in her mini vlog. Matheba celebrated her birthday in style with a mini vlog that featured different exquisite looks as well as an intimate birthday dinner with close friends and family. Fans were surprised by the reappearance of her cousin, Tebogo 'Pinky Girl' Mekgwe, who seemed to have mended fences with the socialite after a public fallout. The beloved cousins had a very public spat on social media back in 2023, with Matheba seemingly throwing shade at Mekgwe's vaccination status, but it appears they have put their differences aside after Mekgwe was spotted at Matheba's glamorous birthday dinner. According to Mekgwe, the fallout was largely due to growing apart and dealing with personal issues, including the loss of her father, which affected her emotionally. But the real tea was the absence of boyfriend David Phume at her birthday celebration, which was brought to light by controversial blogger Musa Khawula. He sparked speculation about a possible breakup and pointed out that the couple had unfollowed each other on social media. However, the media personality recently put the rumours to rest quickly with a series of sassy posts on X, announcing that her man is whisking her away on an international trip to Japan. The post was a subtle yet effective way of saying, 'We're good over here, and my relationship is still on point.' 'My man said, holidayyyyy!!,' she wrote. Followed by another post that states how she has always wanted to visit Tokyo, Japan. Lastly, she posted pictures of herself in first class on her way to her dream destination. The timing of the tweet could not have been more perfect. With fans speculating about her relationship status, the 'Being Bonang' star took control of the narrative and proved them wrong.

Cousins no more: the juicy details behind Tebogo 'Pinky Girl' Mekgwe and Bonang Matheba's rift

Bonang Matheba and Tebogo "Pinky Girl" Mekgwe, the cousin duo that everyone loved to see on their screens before they had their public fallout. Image: Supplied Reality TV star Tebogo 'Pinky Girl' Mekgwe revealed the reason behind her public fall-out with her media powerhouse cousin, Bonang Matheba, in a recent interview. Mekgwe was introduced as Matheba's cousin on 'Being Bonang' and their close relationship was seen on the reality show until they had a public fall-out in 2023. Matheba took to X to say that she wants a new PA to join their team and threw shade at Mekgwe, saying, 'Missing out on trips around the world because you're unvaccinated. Ridiculous.' Mekgwe replied to her on her timeline and said, 'That's just being shallow ... from being dragged, unfollowed and blocked for no reason while I'm pushing the love.' In a follow-up tweet said that she is vaccinated and she is simply not going anywhere. The cousins threw jabs at each other online. Mekgwe was dropped from the reality show, which sparked online speculations with fans wanting to know what happened between the duo. However, the model and DJ explained that the fall-out between them was not that deep as the public made it seem to be. She appeared on the 'Reason TV' podcast, and the host, Troy Malenge, asked her to explain what happened between her and Matheba. She simply answered, 'Yooh, nothing happened, you know. I went through a lot of emotions in 2023.' She further added that as people, we grow and we have different responsibilities, and you do not have to force friendships and relationships and also losing her dad impacted her emotionally. 'Everybody has different responsibilities. You cannot expect people to check up on you, we all have our lives, we all have different responsibilities,' she said. Mekgwe also explained that their fall-out happened due to lack of communication between the two of them and addressed the visa issue that was televised when Matheba was saying in her confessionals that they are leaving Mekgwe because she does not have a visa to go to France with them.
