Girl, 3, allegedly murdered by her mother pictured

A three-year-old girl who was allegedly murdered by her mother has been pictured for the first time. Hope McGrath's body was found by police at an address in Leeds on 30 July. Her mother, Pippa McGrath, 47, has been charged with murder. She was arrested after concerns were raised about the safety of a child. West Yorkshire Police attended an address in Austhorpe Court and found the body of a child, later identified as Hope McGrath. On Tuesday, McGrath appeared at Leeds Crown Court on a video link from prison, where she spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth. Judge Guy Kearl KC, the Recorder of Leeds, said a post-mortem examination on Hope was due to take place on Wednesday. A mother has been charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter. Pippa McGrath, 47, appeared at Leeds Crown Court by video link on Tuesday, when she spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth. She is charged with the murder of Hope McGrath, whose body was found at a bungalow in Austhorpe Court in the Colton area of Leeds last Wednesday. West Yorkshire Police had visited the property after concerns were raised about the safety of a child. Neighbours suggested Hope had suffered with a disability and needed a wheelchair, The Sun reported. The court heard a toxicology report was likely to be relevant to the case. Judge Guy Kearl KC, the Recorder of Leeds, said a post-mortem examination on Hope was due to take place on Wednesday and that 'at least one of the issues will be the toxicology report'. The court heard psychiatric reports would be prepared to establish McGrath's fitness to plead. A date of Feb 24 was set for the trial, which is expected to take up to two weeks. McGrath was remanded in custody until her next appearance at the same court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on Sep 3. The force released a photograph of Hope on Tuesday Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of the force's homicide and major inquiry team, said: 'We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Hope's death. 'A photograph of the three-year-old has been released by her family. I would ask that people respect their privacy at this extremely difficult time.'

Mother, 47, appears in court accused of murdering her three-year-old daughter

A three-year-old girl's cause of death is yet to be established, a court heard today. Little Hope McGrath was found dead at a house in Austhorpe Court, Leeds, West Yorkshire, on July 30. This morning her mother, Pippa McGrath, 47, appeared by video link from HMP New Hall before Leeds Crown Court charged with the toddler's murder. Half a dozen female friends of McGrath watched the proceedings from the public gallery for the ten minute hearing. McGrath, who had her blonde hair tied back in a pony tail, spoke only to confirm her name and give her date of birth. Recorder of Leeds Guy Kearl KC said: 'A post mortem on Hope has not taken place. It is due to take place tomorrow. 'The heart of the issue will be a toxicology report.' Her barrister Marie Spenwyn told the court that McGrath will be signing consent forms for the prosecution to obtain her medical records. The defence, as well as appointing their own pathologist, will also be engaging a forensic psychiatrist, Dr Bradley Hillier, to assess McGrath's fitness to plead. Miss Spenwyn made no application for bail. Judge Kearl set a trial date for February 24 next year which will be heard by a High Court judge. McGrath, who showed no emotion throughout proceedings, will appear again on September 3 for a pre trial hearing. West Yorkshire Police launched a murder investigation after they received a report at 11.06am on Wednesday, July 30, of concern for the safety of a young child. Detective Chief Inspector Stacey Atkinson, of West Yorkshire Police's Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: 'Sadly when emergency services attended at an address on Austhorpe Court, Leeds, the body of a three-year-old girl was found inside.' McGrath was also found at her home address and was taken to hospital for 'urgent medical attention'. DCI Atkinson added: 'I understand that such a tragic incident as this will cause shockwaves in the local community and that there will be speculation about what has happened. 'I would ask people to please let us investigate and if you do have any information that you think could assist our enquiries to get in contact with the investigation team.'
