At 8.7% Punjab registers a sharp increase in crude death rate; 2nd only to Kerala, national avg dips to 6.5

Chandigarh: Punjab recorded a significant increase in its crude death rate (CDR) over the decade from 2009–11 to 2019–21, even as the national average witnessed a decline, according to the latest sample registration system (SRS) statistical report. The CDR, a key indicator used to measure mortality in a population, is influenced by factors such as the size of the elderly population, pandemics, and the accessibility of healthcare services. While India's overall crude death rate fell from 7.2 per 1,000 population in 2009-11 to 6.5 in 2019-21 — a 9.7% decline, Punjab's CDR rose from 6.9 to 7.5 over the same period. At 8.7%, Punjab had the second-highest CDR among the larger Indian states, behind Kerala at 11.6%. The rise in Punjab's CDR aligns with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely affected the state during the assessment period. Punjab was among the worst-hit states in terms of fatality rate during the pandemic period. Additionally, the state experienced a considerable demographic shift, with the proportion of elderly citizens (aged 60 and above) rising from 10.3% in 2011 to 12.6% in 2024. This increase places Punjab sixth among Indian states in terms of elderly population. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Launching Spacious 2/3 BHK in Mulund Piramal Realty Learn More Undo Breaking down the figures further, the urban areas in Punjab saw a marked increase in the CDR, rising from 7.7 to 8.8 – a 14.3% increase, while the rural areas saw a marginal rise from 5.7 to 5.8 – a 1.8% increase. In comparison, neighbouring Himachal Pradesh reported a CDR of 7.2 and Haryana 1.5, while Chhattisgarh recorded the lowest CDR of 5. In the 15–59 age group, Punjab recorded a death rate of 4.5%, the joint second highest in the country, compared to the national average of 3.6%. The data also highlights trends in child mortality. Nationally, 7.9% of all deaths were among children aged 0-4 years, with the rural areas showing a higher proportion (9.1%) than the urban areas (4.9%). Punjab, however, stood out as one of the few exceptions. In the state, the proportion of deaths in this age group was higher in the urban areas (4.5%) than in the rural areas (3%), with an overall rate of 3.5%. The state noted a significant change in percentage crude birth rate between 2009-11 and 2019-21. Between 2009-11 and 2019-21, there was an overall 12.2% decrease in the average CBR for India, while in Punjab the rate came down from 16.6 in 2009-11 to 14.3 in 2019-21, recording a change of -13.9%, higher than the national average of -12.2%. Replacement-level fertility attained Punjab successfully attained replacement-level fertility, even as India's overall total fertility rate (TFR) remained steady at 2.0. Replacement-level fertility is defined as a TFR of 2.1 children per woman — considered the rate required for a population to sustain itself without migration. Punjab reported a TFR of 1.5. Neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh (1.6) and Haryana (2.0) also achieved replacement-level fertility. In comparison, Bihar reported the highest TFR at 3.0, while Delhi and West Bengal matched at 1.4. In terms of population age distribution, Punjab, along with Tamil Nadu, recorded the lowest percentage of children aged 0-4 years, at 6%. By contrast, Bihar had the highest proportion at 11.2%, followed by Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh (9.3% each), and Rajasthan (9.2%). Nationally, 24.8% of the population falls within the 0-14 age group. However, the states such as Tamil Nadu (19.2%), Andhra Pradesh (19.7%), and Punjab (19.9%) have significantly lower shares, with Punjab's breakdown showing 20.3% male and 19.3% female in this age bracket. The gross reproduction rate (GRR), which measures the average number of daughters a woman would bear during her lifetime if she was to conform to age-specific fertility rates and there was no mortality, stood at 0.7 for Punjab, indicating fewer births of female children on an average. Punjab's sex ratio at birth also reflects demographic imbalances. The state recorded 897 females per 1,000 males overall — 879 in the rural areas and 924 in urban areas —compared to the national average of 913 – 912 rural and 918 urban. High proportion of working-age population Punjab also ranks among the states with a high percentage of population in the working-age group (15-59 years), with 69.5% of its residents falling into this category. Telangana and Delhi reported the highest working population at 70.5%, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 70.2%. On the other hand, Bihar had the lowest proportion at 60.6%, followed by Madhya Pradesh (63.6%) and Rajasthan (63.8%). Higher age at marriage, low child marriage rates The report also sheds light on marriage trends across states. In rural Punjab, the mean age at effective marriage is 23.7 years, slightly below that of Himachal Pradesh (24.1 years) but higher than in states like West Bengal (20.6), Assam (20.8), and Jharkhand (20.9). Jammu & Kashmir leads with the highest rural marriage age at 24.9 years. In the urban areas, the mean marriage age is highest in J&K (27.6), followed by Himachal Pradesh (26.7) and Punjab (24.8). The lowest ages were found in West Bengal (21.9), MP (23.0), and Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan (23.1).Child marriage, though still prevalent in some regions, shows promising trends in Punjab.
