Lewis Hamilton speaks his mind in 'hard to watch' interview after Spanish GP

Nico Rosberg said it was 'hard to watch' Lewis Hamilton speak about his Spanish Grand Prix after he had struggled in his Ferrari throughout the race while team-mate Charles Leclerc shone Lewis Hamilton produced a post-race interview after the Spanish Grand Prix which was "hard to watch". That was the view of his former team-mate Nico Rosberg who found it difficult to see the seven-time Formula 1 champion to struggle as he did in Barcelona. It had been a strong qualifying performance from Hamilton, who went fifth fastest. He started two places ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc and said before the race that he was targeting his first Grand Prix podium as a Ferrari driver. ‌ But it turned out that qualifying result would be the highlight of his weekend. Hamilton struggled for pace throughout the 66 laps around the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and cut a glum figure as he reacted to it. ‌ "It was just not a great day," he muttered, speaking to Sky Sports after the race, adding: "Strategy was food, the team did a great job. When pressed for more detail, Hamilton made it clear he was not in a talkative mood. It was a difficult day, there's nothing else to add to it, it's terrible." And when interviewer Rachel Brookes ended the conversation by saying she hoped Ferrari would be able to figure things out for him soon, Hamilton made it clear he is blaming himself for his woes as he replied: "I'm sure they won't, it's probably just me." Speaking on Sky directly after that interview was broadcast, Hamilton's old Mercedes team-mate Rosberg seemed concerned. "It's hard to watch," the German said. "Today was a horrible day for him because he was just slow out there, which is very unusual. ‌ "Yes, sometimes he's been a little bit off in qualifying but usually he's still really really awesome, and today the race was just shockingly bad. And he doesn't have answers either, so did he have damage on the floor? Because these floors are so sensitive and there can be a little bit there and you can lose a lot of time. "When you don't have answers, it's always really tough as a driver. And then you see your team-mate racing up all the way to third place and being on the podium. In light of the whole season he's had so far, it's a really dark situation." There was some joy to be found for Ferrari, though, with Leclerc able to make progress. He had gambled on saving an extra set of tyres for the race and that paid off, the Monegasque cutting through from seventh on the grid to secure his third podium of the season.

Lewis Hamilton responds to surprise result and eyes historic first for Ferrari

Ferrari hope to rely on their race pace after Lewis Hamilton qualified fifth and Charles Leclerc seventh for the Spanish Grand Prix, with both chasing podium honours Lewis Hamilton is eyeing a first Grand Prix podium with Ferrari today after a rare qualifying performance with which he was "really happy". The Brit struggled throughout practice in Barcelona but found the pace he needed to out-qualify team-mate Charles Leclerc for only the second time this year. He starts fifth today and believes Ferrari might have the race pace to be best of the rest behind the McLarens. Hamilton said: "Friday started off fun, but we had some problem with the floor in FP2 and I was losing a lot of downforce. ‌ "But we fixed it for today and the car was much more driveable, much more enjoyable. We clearly have made an improvement going into qualifying to get into Q3 when it's so close and to be in the top five, I'm really happy with that." ‌ Hamilton has so often cut a frustrated figure after qualifying in recent times but it was an upbeat seven-time Formula 1 champion who declared he was actually looking forward to the race. Sign up to our free weekly F1 newsletter, Pit Lane Chronicle, by entering your email address below so that every new edition lands straight in your inbox! ‌ He added: "I did get a bit of a long run yesterday [in practice] and it's definitely going to be close between everybody. It's amazing how close everybody is in qualifying and how half a tenth can put you from sixth down to 11th. That's pretty mad. "The long run is going to be challenging tomorrow for everybody. I think most people have mostly softs and one medium, Charles and a couple of other people have two mediums. "Which tyres are the best? Which strategy is the best? We'll see. They key is going to be getting a good start. My goal is to get a podium - I haven't had a podium in God knows how long, so that's my target for tomorrow." ‌ Leclerc starts two places behind in seventh, having gone against Ferrari advice and saved tyres for Sunday's race. The Monegasque also hopes that risk will pay off in the form of back-to-back podiums after he finished second in Monaco last week. Leclerc said: "We were one of the only cars to have only four sets of softs for qualifying, all the others around us had five new softs, so I knew it was going to be difficult. "I wanted to use only three softs which made our lives a lot more difficult. I take responsibility for it as the team had pushed for a different way. "But I'm quite happy with my choice. Yes, I sacrificed today, but I hope it will pay off tomorrow. If it doesn't then it's my fault. [I'm hoping to get on] the podium. I think the race pace is strong, so it all depends on how much we are going to overtake. We'll see."

George Russell bluntly honest about Mercedes loss of form ahead of Spanish GP

Mercedes have endured a rough few weeks with disappointing performances and results for George Russell and Kimi Antonelli at Imola and Monaco, ahead of Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix George Russell is confident that Mercedes' sudden loss of form is nothing more than a blip. The Silver Arrows enjoyed a strong and consistent start to the season but this triple header of European races has not been kind to them so far. Russell enjoyed an impressive run in the early rounds of the campaign but failed to finish in the top five for the first time at Imola two weekends ago, when he slipped from third on the grid to seventh while team-mate Kimi Antonelli suffered a mechanical issue which meant he failed to finish. ‌ And things didn't get any better in Monaco. Antonelli crashed in qualifying while it was Russell's turn to suffer from reliability gremlins which meant they both started well outside the top 10 and, with overtaking virtually impossible, they finished pointless. ‌ Mercedes remain second in the constructors' championship, though those results have seen their advantage over those trailing them cut. They are now just four points ahead of Red Bull while fourth-placed Ferrari are only one further point behind. Sign up to our free weekly F1 newsletter, Pit Lane Chronicle, by entering your email address below so that every new edition lands straight in your inbox! ‌ Mercedes will be keen to stop the rot and Russell believes they can do so at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. "It's obviously been two poor races," he admitted. "We;ve been inside of the top five every single session up until Imola, so we're hoping to get back into our usual form and have a clean weekend. "With the changes to the front wing [regulation], there's a bit of relearning all of the teams will have to take, but I don't expect it to shake the order up too much. "I don't see any reason why [Mercedes can't get back on form]. As I said, up until Imola we've been inside that top five every single qualifying and race. Imola was a bad race and Monaco things [were] slightly out of our control, so I don't see any reason why we wouldn't be back in that fight for the top five." ‌ Mercedes have not won a race so far in 2025 with their engine customers McLaren dominating in that regard. Other than Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, only Max Verstappen has tasted Grand Prix victory this season, and McLaren enjoy a 172-point advantage over Mercedes as a result. And Russell believes it will be tough again to get the better of the championship leaders with conditions likely to be against his team. He added: "Hopefully [we'll be] fighting for the podium, but we do know our race pace especially in hot races is a step behind McLaren, and this weekend is going to be very hot. "The track is going to be over 50 degrees for the majority of the weekend, the only difference being here is we're on the harder compound of tyres, whereas in Imola and in Jeddah where we struggled the most this season it was on the softest compound of tyres, so that's one small change."

Sacked Red Bull star apologised to wife after 'bad party' at Monaco GP

Former Red Bull driver Sergio Perez was forced to apologise to his wife soon after his win at the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, as videos of him partying were shared on social media Sergio Perez previously apologised for the manner of his celebrations after winning the Monaco Grand Prix in 2022. The 35-year-old driver is currently without a team after being axed by Red Bull at the end of last season, ending his continuous 14-year spell on the Formula One grid. Perez has claimed six wins during his F1 career, including at the Monaco GP in May 2022. However, following his success in Monte Carlo, the Mexican star apologised to his wife Carola Martinez after videos of him dancing with other women at a party emerged online. ‌ "I have seen the videos that have been circulating about me and I take responsibility for it," Perez wrote in a public apology on Instagram."It was a bad party that I didn't know how to control at the height of the person that I am, but it was just that, a very bad party. ‌ "People close to me know my values and the type of person that I am. For those who ask me, we are more united than ever, me and my wife. "And for those who just want to hurt us, I wish you the best. Thank you all for your love, and I apologise to all the people who love me because those videos don't represent me, not at all. We will not talk about this topic anymore, which only makes us forget the great moment we are living as a family. Thank you." Perez's victory at the Monaco GP soon saw him rewarded with a new Red Bull contract. He finished third overall in the 2022 season and improved to runner-up behind team-mate Max Verstappen the following year. A poor end to last season saw Red Bull part ways with Perez in December, despite having renewed his contract until 2026 months earlier. He vowed to take several months to assess his options, meaning an absence from F1 was likely, but Perez reportedly has multiple teams to consider ahead of next year. ‌ It was initially reported that Perez was a leading option for Cadillac as the F1 grid expands to 11 teams in 2026. Perez is said to be in discussions over a possible three-year contract. When asked if Perez was under consideration, Cadillac advisor Mario Andretti told ESPN: 'It's an option. It could be an option. Of course.' ‌ Cadillac are reported to be targeting an experienced driver to lead their new team. With 281 starts on the F1 grid, Perez fits the criteria, but Cadillac could face a battle for his signature. It has been rumoured that Perez's team approached Alpine earlier this month. This season, the team demoted Jack Doohan after six rounds, with Franco Colapinto taking his place as Alpine's second driver alongside Pierre Gasly. Alpine's executive advisor Flavio Briatore explained the decision and admitted that the team were focusing on the future. 'At the moment you need to put the team together, from the commercial side, the technical side, the management side,' Briatore said. 'The driver makes no difference now. The difference will be in 2026, 2027, 2028. This should be the difference for the driver.'
