George Russell bluntly honest about Mercedes loss of form ahead of Spanish GP
Mercedes have endured a rough few weeks with disappointing performances and results for George Russell and Kimi Antonelli at Imola and Monaco, ahead of Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix
George Russell is confident that Mercedes' sudden loss of form is nothing more than a blip. The Silver Arrows enjoyed a strong and consistent start to the season but this triple header of European races has not been kind to them so far.
Russell enjoyed an impressive run in the early rounds of the campaign but failed to finish in the top five for the first time at Imola two weekends ago, when he slipped from third on the grid to seventh while team-mate Kimi Antonelli suffered a mechanical issue which meant he failed to finish.
And things didn't get any better in Monaco. Antonelli crashed in qualifying while it was Russell's turn to suffer from reliability gremlins which meant they both started well outside the top 10 and, with overtaking virtually impossible, they finished pointless.
Mercedes remain second in the constructors' championship, though those results have seen their advantage over those trailing them cut. They are now just four points ahead of Red Bull while fourth-placed Ferrari are only one further point behind.

Mercedes will be keen to stop the rot and Russell believes they can do so at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. "It's obviously been two poor races," he admitted. "We;ve been inside of the top five every single session up until Imola, so we're hoping to get back into our usual form and have a clean weekend.
"With the changes to the front wing [regulation], there's a bit of relearning all of the teams will have to take, but I don't expect it to shake the order up too much.
"I don't see any reason why [Mercedes can't get back on form]. As I said, up until Imola we've been inside that top five every single qualifying and race. Imola was a bad race and Monaco things [were] slightly out of our control, so I don't see any reason why we wouldn't be back in that fight for the top five."
Mercedes have not won a race so far in 2025 with their engine customers McLaren dominating in that regard. Other than Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, only Max Verstappen has tasted Grand Prix victory this season, and McLaren enjoy a 172-point advantage over Mercedes as a result.
And Russell believes it will be tough again to get the better of the championship leaders with conditions likely to be against his team. He added: "Hopefully [we'll be] fighting for the podium, but we do know our race pace especially in hot races is a step behind McLaren, and this weekend is going to be very hot.
"The track is going to be over 50 degrees for the majority of the weekend, the only difference being here is we're on the harder compound of tyres, whereas in Imola and in Jeddah where we struggled the most this season it was on the softest compound of tyres, so that's one small change."

Diaz puts pressure on Liverpool and confirms transfer talks with rival clubs
Luis Diaz has attracted the attention of Barcelona though the La Liga champions have seen a move for him fail, with the Liverpool star now speaking out on his future Luis Diaz has put the ball firmly in Liverpool's court after confirming he has held talks with rival clubs over a potential move. Diaz was a revelation when he first arrived at Anfield under Jurgen Klopp and continued that under Arne Slot. With Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah starring on the wings, Diaz has mainly been deployed as a central striker by Reds boss Arne Slot. He played an important role this season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions as they won the Premier League title. But speculation has been mounting since January that he could be on the move. The Colombian has only two years remaining on his contract and with talks over a new deal at an impasse, several top clubs around the world are interested. One of those is Barcelona, though Liverpool firmly rejected an approach from the La Liga champions for Diaz on Thursday. The attacker is currently with Colombia for their World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Argentina over the next week. Diaz was put up alongside manager Néstor Lorenzo for the press conference to preview the clash with Peru. He was inevitably asked about his future and did little to reassure Reds fans that he felt his future is on Merseyside. "I'm very happy at Liverpool, I've always said so. They've welcomed me very well from day one. We are currently in contact with Liverpool, because we are talking to clubs," Diaz said. "That's normal given the transfer market that's opening. We're trying to arrange what's best for us. We're talking to clubs, it's normal in the market and we're looking at what's best for us. 'I'm waiting to see what happens. If they (Liverpool) give us a good renewal or I stay there for two years, I'll be happy. Now it's up to them.' Diaz's comments come after Liverpool informed Barcelona that the 28-year-old is not up for sale. The Reds have insisted that they would only consider eye-watering money for the Colombian. The Spanish champions approached the Reds about signing Diaz but it was rebuffed this week. Liverpool are not prepared to sell the Colombian and their stance will only change if they receive a huge offer that would allow them to replace him with a similar or better player. The Reds have noted that Manchester United ace Bruno Fernandes was valued at £85m by Saudi club Al-Hilal and is two years older than Diaz. So they would want more than that to convince them to sell this summer. Despite that, there are no plans to open contract talks yet with Diaz with only two years left on his contract. Liverpool are ready to maximise his current abilities in his peak years rather than sell for below his valuation just because of his contract situation. That would mean they would be prepared to allow him to leave for nothing in two years. But they are not interested in doing a cut-price deal this summer for a player they believe can still have a big impact.

Why Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd are not playing in the Club World Cup
Some of the biggest teams in Europe are taking part in the Club World Cup this summer but there's no Arsenal, Manchester United or Liverpool. Chelsea and Manchester City are the two Premier League sides heading to the United States as they attempt to get their hands on more silverware. They will be joined by the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Atletico Madrid. Ahead of the revamped tournament getting started on June 14, here's why there will be no Arsenal, United or Liverpool at the 2025 Club World Cup… Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Liverpool are the current Premier League champions but they won't be playing at the Club World Cup, nor will the top-flight runners-up Arsenal. United, who just endured a horrific 2024-25 campaign but remain one of the biggest clubs in England, won't be taking part in the tournament either. That's because of FIFA's qualification rules, with only 12 of the 32 spots at the Club World Cup handed to European teams. Under FIFA's rules, the Champions League winners from the last four seasons (2021-2024 for this Club World Cup) gain automatic qualification. That's why Chelsea and City are taking part, because they both landed the Champions League trophy in 2021 and 2023 respectively. United and Liverpool have both previously been crowned champions of the Club World Cup – but Arsenal have never even played in it before. Before the Club World Cup was expanded for 2025, it only featured seven teams, with just one European taking part as the winners of the most recent Champions League. Arsenal have never won the Champions League in their history – which means they have not participated in the Club World Cup to date. United featured in the 2008 Club World Cup after winning the Champions League in the 2007-08 season – and were crowned champions – defeating Ecuadorian side LDU Quito in the final. Liverpool, meanwhile, entered the 2019 Club World Cup after their triumph in the 2018-19 Champions League and also walked away with the trophy by beating Brazilian team Flamengo in the final.
