Pitt County Cooperative Extension to host annual plant sale

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Pitt County Cooperative Extension's annual plant sale will take place Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Pitt County Arboretum. More than 60 local master gardeners will be selling their goods and raising money for the Master Garden Program. 'Master Gardeners are volunteers for Cooperative Extension, and they help us educate the public on gardening and landscape concepts and maintain the beautiful gardens at our county arboretum,' Pitt County Cooperative Extension Service member Matt Stevens said. 'The plant sale is the biggest fundraiser to support that activity and to make enhancements and additions to the gardens.' The sale features locally grown fruits, vegetables, pottery, outdoor decor and more. They only accept cash or checks. Funds from the event will help support the Arboretum year-round. Just days away from Easter, egg prices are at a record high

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — With Easter just a few days away, egg prices in grocery stores are at a record high. The Pitt County Cooperative Extension says that high prices are mostly due to Bird Flu outbreaks. 'If we look nationally on the trends, according to the U.S. marketing report recently or last week, the wholesale prices are coming down,' Pitt County Livestock Agent Andy Burlingham said. 'But prices in the grocery store are remaining strong at the retail level.' With these high prices, people are looking to alternatives for their Easter festivities. Disaster Crop Loss Program to impact Pitt County Farmers

GREENVILLE, N.C (WNCT)- The North Carolina Department of Agriculture is enforcing the Agricultural Disaster Crop loss program. The Pitt County Cooperative Extension, along with all its state partners, have the ability to apply for a piece of the grant because of the extreme weather conditions from 2024. The General Assembly allocated $311 million for the program and $111 million will be allocated to Pitt County alone. In 2024, a three-month drought and heavy rains from Tropical Storm Debby left Pitt County farmers with $10 million in crop loss and 80 percent reduction in corn yield specifically. The grant is going to be a huge help for farmers trying to get back on their feet after an unforgiving year of weather. 'We are here to decrease your inputs and maximize your yields at the end of the day, that's our job, to make sure that you get your crop in the ground at lowest cost to get the highest yield back,' Crop Specialist, Cooperative Extension, Jonathan Smith said. 'So, for the application process we're setting up appointments. You can call the local extension office, and we'll make an appointment. You can come in. It's going to take about 30 minutes to go through the application,' Smith said. 'You need to bring your 578 form from FSA. And you also need to bring a W-9, which is an IRS form. And we'll go through that and none of your information is going to be saved. It's just going to go through the process and make sure that we get your application in time. The deadline is May 4th, and the application opened to April 1st.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Spring brings invasive species of tree, program helps remove them

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Thursday is the first day of Spring and although it's beautiful, it can be smelly. The smell is because of Bradford Pear Trees, the white trees that some people said smell like fish. They're an invasive species and experts say they're bad for the environment. 'They multiply very quickly. They grow very rapidly. They're a weak wooded tree, so they break easily. Any time we have winds or ice or other types of extreme weather events. So generally not a tree that we recommend people plant intentionally,' said Matthew Stevens, County Extension Director for Pitt County Cooperative Extension. There is a Bradford Pear Bounty Program where you can cut your pear tree down and receive a replacement tree to help rid of this invasive species, click here for more information.
