Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Pixel 10 Pro Fold: Here's how Google can beat Samsung

The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold will debut at the Made by Google 2025 hardware event on August 20. But even before the new version of the foldable phone hits retail shelves, it's already facing a big challenge. And the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the reason why. Samsung's own updated foldable phone goes on sale this Friday (July 25). And though the $1,999 starting cost is a steep price to pay, you get an impressive phone in return In fact, in his Galaxy Z Fold 7 review, my colleague Mark Spoonauer calls the new Samsung model the foldable phone he's been waiting for, thanks to an ultra portable design that's uncommon for devices this big. We've got the Galaxy Z Flip 7 ranked as the best foldable phone thanks in part to its more palatable price tag, but the Galaxy Z Fold 7 isn't that far behind. And that poses a problem for Google, which is about to roll out a new version of its foldable phone immediately after Samsung has seriously stepped up its game. It's certainly a formidable prospect for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold to take on, but it's not an impossible task. Even with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 raising the standard for foldable phones, here's how the Pixel 10 Pro Fold can answer back. Galaxy Z Fold 7: from $799 w/ trade-in @ SamsungSamsung is knocking up to $1,150 off Galaxy Z Fold 7 preorders when you trade-in an older phone. Additionally, you'll get a free storage upgrade with your preorder. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features an 8-inch AMOLED (2184 x 1968) 120Hz main display, 6.5-inch AMOLED (2520 x 1080) 120Hz cover display, Snapdragon 8 Elite CPU, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. On the rear you get a 200MP f/1.7 main wide-angle lens, 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens, and 10MP f/2.4 telephoto lens. Selfie cams include a 10MP f/2.2 main display and cover camera. To understand exactly what the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is up against, let's first look a little closer at what the Galaxy Z Fold 7 gets so right. And a lot of it comes down to the phone's design. We can argue about what foldable is the thinnest in the world when it's opened up — Samsung's latest or a couple of foldable phones largely available only in China. But the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is certainly in the conversation. An opened Z Fold 7 is 4.2mm thin, and even when snapped shut the 8.9mm profile isn't that much thicker than conventional phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is light, too, tipping the scales at a mere 7.5 ounces. For context, that's lighter than the Galaxy S25 Ultra (a shade under 7.7 ounces) and iPhone 16 Pro Max (8 ounces). It's definitely lighter than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which is 1.5 ounces heavier than Samsung's latest. We've heard the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will slim down the size of the hinge compared to the current model, but it's unclear how that would translate to the new phone's dimensions. Even so, Google would have to shave nearly a millimeter off the 5.1mm Pixel 9 Pro Fold to make its new model as thin as an opened Galaxy Z Fold 7. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 ushers in other improvements, particularly to the cameras — long a strength of Google's phones. You get a 200MP main camera with the Galaxy Z Fold 7, along with a much improved 10MP selfie cam on the phone's interior display. Throw in an improved ProVisual Engine, and the new Fold produced detailed, colorful photos in our testing. Samsung also tweaked its Galaxy AI features to take better advantage of the Galaxy Z Fold 7's unique design, from accessing the Now Brief and Gemini Live features from the phone's larger cover display to side-by-side comparisons of generative AI edits on the super-sized 8-inch main screen. That last area — AI capabilities — gives Google an in with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. While Samsung's Galaxy AI features certainly impress, Google's no stranger to developing on-device AI features of its own, as evidenced by the company's win in our recent AI phone face-off. Besides, as great as Samsung's use of Gemini is, let's not forget that's Google's assistant will be very present on the new Pixel 10 models coming out, the Fold included. While Google may have a hard time out-designing the Galaxy Z Fold 7, there are apparently other steps the phone maker can take to make the Pixel 10 Pro Fold stand out. One of those ways apparently involves increased durability, as leaked Pixel 10 Pro Fold specs suggest that the phone will boast a dust-and-water resistance rating of IP68 — a first for foldable phones. The higher rating means that Google's new foldable will not only be able to survive a dunk in water but keep out dust as well. That's been a challenge for other foldable phones, as the moving parts leave plenty of areas for finer particles to get inside the device. As durable as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is, for example, it still offers an IP48 rating, as it's not graded to repel smaller dust particles. There's one other area where Samsung has left the door open for other foldable phone makers to challenge the Galaxy Z Fold 7 — battery life. While the new Samsung phone lasts longer than its predecessor, it's only a slight gain and barely ahead of the average battery life for phones that we test. That's likely a reflection of the fact that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 features the same size battery as the Galaxy Z Fold 6. That's not a mistake Google sounds like it's going to make with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. According to those leaked specs, the new foldable Pixel could offer a 5,015 mAh battery, which would be a fairly noteworthy step up from the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's 4,650 mAh cell. Assuming that's accurate, we'd expect the new model to improve up the Pixel 9 Pro Fold's 11.5-plus hour result on our battery test, especially if the Tensor G5 chipset likely to power the Pixel 10 Pro Fold proves to be more power efficient. Any phone that takes on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is going to have its work cut for it, given all the positive changes Samsung has introduced to this year's model. But focusing on AI features, durability and longevity would give Google an in for making a splash with the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Pixel 10 Pro Fold Leak Reveals Fresh Green and Blue Colours

Google's next foldable phone could add a splash of colour to its lineup if a new leak is anything to go by. According to renders shared by Android Headlines , the upcoming Pixel 10 Pro Fold will drop its traditional black and white finishes in favour of two striking new colours: a soft green 'Jade' and a sleek silvery blue 'Moonstone.' Since launching its first foldable in 2023, Google has stuck to the safe, neutral shades of Obsidian (black) and Porcelain (white) for its foldable devices, including the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This new shift hints that the tech giant is ready to offer users something a bit more playful. Personally, the pistachio green looks like a refreshing change. Beyond the colour update, rumours hint that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will bring modest upgrades under the hood. The foldable is expected to feature a slightly larger 6.4-inch cover screen, a bigger battery, and a spacious 1TB storage option. Android Headlines also reported that this new foldable could be completely dustproof — a first for any foldable phone. Google is expected to officially unveil the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, along with the already-teased Pixel 10, during its Made by Google event on August 20th.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 vs Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Sample Photos Comparison

Which phone has the better camera — the new Galaxy Fold 7 or the Pixel 9 Pro Fold? Let's kick off this camera comparison starts with a look at the camera specs on both phones. $1120 off (53%) Pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 7 at Samsung and grab a free storage upgrade on the 512GB model. On top of that, you can save an extra up to $1,000 with eligible device trade-ins. Alternatively, you can pre-order the phone with a $300 Samsung credit that must be used before completing your purchase. Pre-order at Samsung The big upgrade for the Fold 7 is clearly the new 200MP main camera, the same one that Samsung uses on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. With a larger sensor than before, the Galaxy has a theoretical advantage over the Pixel 9 Pro Fold main camera. The ultra-wide cameras on both phones are comparable: a 12MP one on the Galaxy and an 11MP one on the Pixel, with a similar field of view. For telephoto, the Galaxy goes with a 3X zoom camera, while the Pixel opts for a 5X zoom camera. This one is personal preference: 3X is better for portraits, while 5X is good for far-away objects and events like concerts. Our gut feel is that the 3X one is more practical, but this is up to everyone to decide for themselves. But camera specs are only numbers and what really matters is the image quality, so let's take a look at the sample photos. What are the main differences you see? And do you prefer the camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 or the one on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold ?

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold might be getting only the best Pro colors

After we saw leaked renders of the Pixel 10 and then the Pixel 10 Pro, it's now time to take a close look at the colors of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. If there's a slight surprise about this leak, it is that Google may opt only for the two slightly more interesting colors of the Pro models. A new set of renders leaked by Android Headlines all but confirms the previous rumors that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will be available in the following two colors: That would continue Google's tradition of limiting the colors of its most expensive smartphone to only a couple of options, as it did with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold last year. That foldable was only available in Obsidian and Porcelain, which are the names Google uses for the black and white versions of its phones. This year, the company may be skipping basic colors altogether. That would be true only if we assume the slight blue tint on the otherwise gray Moonstone version makes it bold. Just like with the Pixel 10 Pro , the Jade version appears to combine a nice green color with gold accents, which is relatively exciting. The newly leaked renders follow the recent leaks of the Pixel 10 and Pixel 10 Pro colors. The vanilla Pixel 10 is rumored to have Obsidian, Indigo, Frost, and Limoncello as its color options, which appeared much bolder in the renders. The Pixel 10 Pro , on the other hand, is expected to arrive in Obsidian, Porcelain, Moonstone, and Jade. A caveat in the color options could be that Google might limit some storage options to specific colors. In the case of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold , that means the 1TB version might be only available in the Moonstone color. Those renders are very likely to be real, which would mean that Google is once again forcing everyone who wants a premium phone to choose from rather dull colors. While I hope that's not the case, we'll need to wait until the Made for Google event on August 20. That's when Google is expected to announce the Pixel 10 , Pixel 10 Pro , Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro Fold , and the Pixel Watch 4. That's the lineup with which the company hopes to challenge the brand-new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Galaxy S25, and the upcoming iPhone 17.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 proves foldables have reached peak design

Ask most average people why they weren't willing to buy one of the best folding phones, and the answer often includes the price, size, or weight. The new Galaxy Z Fold 7 addresses two out of these three issues and, in turn, resolves one of the key problems with folding phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thinner than any previous folding phone available in the US, measuring 4.2mm thick when unfolded, and is only second in thickness to the Honor Magic V5, which is 0.1mm thinner when unfolded. Yet, that phone has a much larger circular camera hump, so it feels similar, if not slightly thicker, in the hand. Recommended Videos The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is also considerably lighter, weighing 215 grams, compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which weighs 24 grams more. The Magic V5 is just two grams heavier than the Samsung; the Oppo Find N5 is a further 12 grams heavier, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the heaviest at 254 grams. Ultimately, the design of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 raises one key question: has folding phone design peaked? How the Galaxy Z Fold 7 gets the design so right When designing the new Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung began with a primary goal that has proven essential: can they build a folding phone that is indistinguishable from a regular phone when folded? The Galaxy Z Fold 7 mostly ticks this box, as although it's 0.7mm thicker than the Galaxy S25 Ultra, it's three grams lighter. When we showed the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to 30 average users, more than a third commented on the thickness when they first felt the device, and almost another third commented on its weight. These in-hand improvements have made the Galaxy Z Fold 7 feel nearly identical to a regular phone, to the point where many of those same people were surprised when they unfolded it. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 isn't the first device to achieve this, but it's the first folding phone that feels distinctly normal in the hand. This makes it a stunning alternative for those who want the folding form factor, but don't want the added heft that has accompanied folding phones from Samsung, Google, and others. The epitome of the perfect foldable design The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is so enjoyable in the hand that it raises the question of what comes next, at least in terms of design. Samsung itself mentioned that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 could be around 0.2mm thinner without affecting the USB-C port, but no thinner, so just making it thinner wouldn't justify an upgrade. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a worthy upgrade over last year's Galaxy Z Fold 6 or any previous Samsung folding phone, but a Galaxy Z Fold 8 that's 0.2mm thinner wouldn't be as newsworthy. One area that could be improved further is the camera. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 camera features the same 200MP main camera as the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and our testing has proven that the camera is just as capable. However, the camera bump is considerable — albeit less pronounced than the Magic V5 — and its position on the left side of the phone means it rocks noticeably when laid flat on a table. The Magic V5 and Oppo Find N5 both address this wobble with a circular camera design on the rear, ensuring it lies flat, but this design results in a thicker overall phone. Then there are the subtle, rounded corners, or lack thereof, on the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Most of its rivals feature subtle rounded edges on the front display, which reduces the screen size but makes it easier to reach the far corners. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features squared edges to the display, and while it's uncomfortable for some, it nestles perfectly in the palm of my hand. All of these complaints ultimately nitpick a fundamentally excellent design, raising the question of whether the foldable design has now reached its peak. At least in terms of design, there's nothing I would change about the Galaxy Z Fold 7 design that I think would fundamentally change the design or form factor, so the answer seems to be yes. However, while the design is perfect, there are still areas Samsung can improve. The non-design parts that could be improved As I covered in our Galaxy Z Fold 7 review, Samsung's newest folding phone offers numerous improvements over the previous generation, but there is still room for improvement. First, there's the battery; the 4,400 mAh battery is smaller than the Honor Magic V5 (5,820mAh) and the Oppo Find N5 (5,600 mAh), yet both of those are almost as thick as the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Then there's the camera. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features a 200MP main camera, but its 12MP ultrawide and 10MP telephoto cameras are not as competitive as those of its rivals. However, each of these improvements shouldn't come at the expense of the design. It's the key reason I recommend the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Samsung would do well to ensure it doesn't stray from this design in the future. It's so good that I hope other phone makers follow suit.
