Pixlr backs Malaysia's AI push

KUALA LUMPUR: Local tech firm Pixlr Group has expanded its support for Malaysia's national AI education goals. This is by offering free access to its digital design tools through the Ministry of Education's Digital Educational Learning Initiative Malaysia (DELIMa) platform. The initiative, known as Pixlr for Education, now reaches more than 4.1 million students and 500,000 teachers across the country. Pixlr, best known for its AI-powered photo editing tools like and was first integrated into DELIMa in mid-2022. The company also launched a teacher training programme in 2023 to accompany the rollout. To date, more than 1,500 educators have received instruction on how to incorporate AI tools into the classroom, free of charge. Pixlr founder and chief exceutive officer Stephanie Sitt said the move was driven by a desire to contribute to the local education sector, especially after seeing the software's impact in other countries during the Covid-19 lockdowns. "We saw Pixlr helping so many educators overseas during the Covid-19 lockdowns, especially in the US where it is widely used on Google Chromebooks. That's when we thought: Can't we do the same here at home?" In addition to its work in Malaysia, Pixlr is also part of Singapore's national digital learning ecosystem. It is currently whitelisted on the country's Student Learning Space, used by over 35,000 teachers and 450,000 students. Despite its growing international footprint (its mobile AI photo editor has surpassed 100 million downloads globally), Pixlr said it remains committed to regional digital education initiatives. "By embedding accessible AI tools in classrooms, Pixlr aims to support skills development and digital readiness among students and teachers in Southeast Asia," Sitt said.
