United book place in President's Cup final with comfortable win

OXFORD United booked their place in the final of the President's Cup in Indonesia with a 4-0 victory against Arema FC. The win backed up the 6-3 success in the Group A opener against a Liga Indonesia All-Star side Przemyslaw Placheta gave the U's an early lead against Arema, the 2024 winners, while Ole Romeny doubled the advantage just a few minutes later. United academy graduate Leo Snowden netted the third goal of the evening just before half-time at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, while Gatlin O'Donkor headed in the fourth with 20 minutes left on the clock. Five minutes into the game, a floodlight failure ensured the match was delayed for more than 20 minutes, and soon after the clash kicked off again, United nudged in front. Jack Currie directed a deep cross over to Placheta on the far side, and the Polish winger finished smartly at the back post. As quickly as the U's took the lead, they then doubled it. Josh Johnson played a great ball over the top and Romeny finished with aplomb past Lucas Frigeri in the Arema goal. There was then concern for Indonesia superstar Romeny, who was on the receiving end of a crunching challenge from Brazilian attacker Valdeci, shown a yellow card for the tackle. Romeny couldn't continue and was cheered off the pitch on a stretcher by the supporters who have quickly grew to idolise him. Louie Sibley replaced Romeny in the attacking midfield role behind Tom Bradshaw. Seven minutes before the break, Placheta cut inside from the right-hand side onto his left foot, however his low effort was claimed with relative ease by Arema goalkeeper Frigeri. United added a third goal before half-time, as Sibley did well down the right-hand side to then pick out Snowden, who managed to touch the ball over the line from close range. There was one final opportunity for the U's to get on the scoresheet in the first half, when Currie crossed for Bradshaw, whose header teed up a volley for Sibley on the edge of the penalty area, but the midfielder smashed over the crossbar and the offside flag went up against Bradshaw regardless. Gary Rowett made four changes at the break, introducing Michal Helik, Will Vaulks, Stan Mills and Mark Harris for Peter Kioso, Cameron Brannagan, Snowden and Bradshaw. Further alterations were made just after the hour mark, as Aaron Lacey and O'Donkor replaced the impressive Johnson and Placheta. O'Donkor scored the fourth goal of United's evening, attacking a Vaulks cross from the right to head in from close range. Next season ‘will probably be tougher' warns winger

PRZEMYSLAW Placheta has warned next season 'will probably be tougher' for Oxford United after he rescued a stoppage time leveller on the final day. The U's were already assured of Sky Bet Championship survival heading to Swansea City, and thanks to Placheta's 93rd minute equaliser, were able to end the season with a 3-3 draw. It was a fifth campaign in English football for Polish winger Placheta, who aside from one season in the Premier League with Norwich City, has played exclusively in the Championship. 'It's not that easy to play well all season because even some top teams have some bad moments as well. 'We know that it's always about staying positive and to try and win the next game. This is the Championship. 'I think we can be happy because we did our job this season. Of course, the next season will probably be tougher, and we will need to be ready for next season.' Placheta added: 'It's a great time to score in the last game of the season against my previous club, so I'm pleased for that. 'It's good that we didn't lose the game. I'm grateful for that and I'm grateful that our fans came to this away game and supported us in the last game. 'Tyler [Goodrham] played a great pass into my feet, so I could take a touch and shoot, so I was very pleased for him, and I'm grateful for him as well.'

First goal for Siriki Dembele gives U's huge boost for survival hopes

SIRIKI Dembele scored his first goal for Oxford United to end the club's nine-game winless run and provide a huge boost in their battle for survival in Sky Bet Championship. A game which lacked quality for large periods sparked into life with 10 minutes to go, when Watford defender James Abankwah was shown a second yellow card. Just a couple of minutes later, Dembele showed good composure to smash the U's into the lead from inside the penalty area. Gary Rowett made five changes to the side which lost at Hull City in midweek, with one of those enforced as injured skipper Elliott Moore was replaced at the heart of the defence by Ben Nelson. Elsewhere, Cameron Brannagan, Przemyslaw Placheta, Ole Romeny and Dembele came into the side for Alex Matos, Stan Mills, Ruben Rodrigues and Matt Phillips respectively. The visitors had the first sniff of goal when with seven minutes on the clock, a left-footed Tom Ince shot from just outside the penalty box was blocked and the ball sailed narrowly over the crossbar. Will Vaulks then went in strong for a 50-50 challenge with Tom Dele-Bashiru, allowing United to launch a counter-attack from the halfway line, with the move resulting in Placheta cutting infield onto his left foot and directing a low strike wide. Giorgi Chakvetadze sent a right-footed 25-yard free kick narrowly off target, prior to the Hornets carving a better opportunity midway through the first half. Moussa Sissoko was slipped through on goal, but he was unable to make proper contact with the ball, allowing Jamie Cumming to do enough to thwart the former Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder. The U's then had their best opportunity of the half just before the half hour mark, as Brannagan clipped in a corner and Nelson headed over when he arguably should've hit the target. At the other end, the Hornets got forward straight away, and Chakvetadze fizzed an effort wide from the left channel of the penalty box. The teams then exchanged strike from outside the area, as Dele-Bashiru shot from a central area, with Cumming claiming it in his midriff, while Brannagan drove a low, left-footed effort into the gloves of Egil Selvik. In first half injury time, a Francisco Sierralta header brought a good save out of Cumming, and then Ince shot low into the gloves of the United goalkeeper a few moments later. Five minutes into the second period, Placheta did well to keep the ball alive on the right-hand byline, and his deep cross reached Dembele, who shot wide at the back post. A long-range free kick from Imran Louza flew over the crossbar, and the same player went closer a few minutes later when he crashed a low, left-footed effort just wide from the edge of the box. With 67 minutes on the clock, Rowett made his first changes, as Peter Kioso and Tyler Goodrham replaced Nelson and Romeny, with the defensive switch seeing Hidde ter Avest move across to left back, Ciaron Brown partner Michal Helik at centre half, and Kioso slot in at right back. Within 10 minutes of coming on, Goodrham found himself in space just outside the box, however his left-footed strike lacked conviction and was easily claimed by Selvik. With 10 minutes left on the clock, Hornets centre back Abankwah fouled Placheta and was shown his second yellow card of the afternoon, and United took advantage by nudging in front a couple of minutes later. As the U's appealed for a foul on the edge of the area, but Dembele played on and produced a powerful finish which flew past Selvik. United then had to battle their way through seven minutes of added time, but they were relatively untroubled by the 10-man Hornets. Oxford United (4-2-3-1): Cumming; ter Avest, Helik, Nelson (Kioso 67), Brown; Vaulks, Brannagan; Placheta (Matos 89), Romeny (Goodrham 67), Dembele (Phillips 89); Harris.
