Platzmann Open: Sumit Nagal Suffers Defeat At Hands Of Niels McDonald

Indian tennis ace Sumit Nagal suffered a defeat to Niels McDonald in the pre-quarterfinals of the Platzmann Open on Saturday in a second round match which lasted two hours and 16 minutes and was completed over two days due to rain. Nagal went down 2-6 6-4 4-6 to the junior French Open champion McDonald, who is ten years younger than experienced Indian, at the ATP 75 Challenge event in Hagen, Germany. The two players had split the first two sets when the match was suspended and had to be completed on the second day. The 17-year-old McDonald, playing as a wild card, saved six of the nine breakpoints and broke Nagal five times in the match. He won 95 points compared to 83 by the Indian, who entered as an alternate. Nagal earned €1535 and six ranking points for his effort. Meanwhile, at the Lexington Open in the USA, young gun Dhakshineshwar Suresh went down fighting 6-7(4) 4-6 to local wild card and higher-ranked Eliot Spizzirri. Dhakshineshwar was recently named in India's Davis Cup squad as a reserve player. He is ranked 788 while Spizzirri is ranked 124 in the world. Sumit Nagal moves to second round of ATP Challenger in Germany
Sumit Nagal (Image credit: X) NEW DELHI: Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal moved to the second round of the Platzmann Open with a straight set win over Spain's Carlos Sanchez Jover in Hagen, Germany on Tuesday. The 307-ranked Indian defeated the higher-ranked Jover 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of the ATP Challenger event which is being played on clay. He will take on 17-year-old German tennis player Niels McDonald in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
