MA seeks Poad's help for Sea Games

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Athletics (MA) will rehire Poad Kassim to train the national sprinters for the Sea Games in Bangkok in December. Former teacher Poad was a national sprints coach, but his contract was not extended by MA last year. He then got a job to train Kedah athletes. Poad is known for guiding Khairul Hafiz Jantan to break the national men's 100m record with a time of 10.18s at the Malaysia Games in Sarawak in 2016. He also helped Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli to set the national women's 100m record (11.49s) at the Perlis Open last October. MA president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said that Poad has been doing decentralised training for national sprinters. "It is costly to send eight national sprinters to train in Kedah. So we decided to rope him in as the national coach to train the eight sprinters." Shahidan said - after an MA council meeting today - they will submit Poad's name to the National Sports Council for approval. "With the inclusion of Poad, there will be seven coaches that will be roped in by MA for various disciplines like sprints, jumping and throwing. "We will name the other six coaches later," said Shahidan. On the issue that a few national athletes were unhappy training under certain coaches and wanted to boycott training, Shahidan said he would refer the matter to the MA disciplinary board. "I don't want to prolong the issue, and I want the athletes to focus on training for competitions."

MA boss says Poad will return to take charge of national sprinters

KUALA LUMPUR: Kedah Sports School coach Mohd Poad Md Kassim will return to running the national sprint camp in the near future, according to Malaysia Athletics (MA) president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim. He said the matter had already been agreed by the MA committee members to bring in Poad to train eight national sprinters in Bukit Jalil in preparation for the Thailand SEA Games this December. Shahidan said the governing body did not want the issue involving several national sprinters and technical director Robert Ballard to be prolonged and wanted all athletes to be able to train as usual as soon as possible. "Athletes need to train, because our goal is the SEA Games, if this issue lasts we will lose, we want eight sprinters to focus on training because they have the potential to get medals," he said yesterday at the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM). Elaborating further, Shahidan said he would leave it to the disciplinary committee to resolve the issue involving several athletes who did not want to attend training before. It was reported earlier that several sprinters chose to boycott Ballard over the past month, which the Australian coach had vehemently denied. Several unhappy athletes had chosen to return to training under former national coach Poad. Meanwhile, MA vice president Sallehudin Satar said the proposal to bring Poad as the national sprint coach and six other coaches for the national athletics camp had already been sent to the National Sports Council and the decision was expected to be known next week. "Next week the president will meet NSC director-general Jefri Ngadirin, and we will know the result but for now we have not informed the names of the coaches," he said. NSC have agreed to a request from the MA to appoint six coaches to strengthen preparations of the national athletics squad for several major tournaments including preparations for the Thailand SEA Games this December. The agreement was reached during a meeting between Jefri and the MA delegation led by Shahidan on April 10, but at that time the list of coaches had not been submitted. The list of six new coaches is made up of three overseas coaches and three local coaches to empower the coaching aspects of all disciplines, including sprints, throws and jumps.
