MORGANTOWN – It was a successful opening day for Monongalia County Schools in Charleston on Day 1 of the 2025 WVSSAC state track and field meet at Laidley Field on Friday. The Morgantown and University girls' teams pace the field, holding the top spots in the overall standings. However, the Mohigans hold a 15-point advantage, with 46 points to the Hawks' 31. MHS took the top two spots in the girls' 3200-meter run. Senior Maraid Johnson won the state title with a time of 10:57.34, and sophomore Allison Hawkins placed second at 10:58.91. The result earned MHS 18 points. Sophomore Harlyn Nelson won the girls' Pole Vault with a height of 11-00.00. MHS took second in the Shuttle Hurdles and third in the 4×800-meter relay to sit comfortably in first entering Day 2. UHS did not see a girls state champion on Friday but did finish well in most events, including second in the girls 4×800-meter relay and third and fourth spots in the 3200-meter run, as seniors Claire Von Boetticher and Caroline Ballard collected points for their team. In Class A, the Trinity Christian boys' team is second overall with 26 points, two ahead of Doddridge County and trailing first-place Magnolia, which tallied 45 points on Friday. TCS took points in five of the six events that held finals on Day 1, highlighted by senior Chase Livengood in the field events as he took home the state title in the Long Jump and second in the High Jump. His winning distance of 21-09.50 was over a foot longer than the runner-up at 20-05.75. The UHS boys' team didn't find a state championship winner on Friday but sits only one point behind Hurricane in the team standings. The Hawks tallied 28 points on Friday and are ahead of Spring Mills by 8.5 points. Senior Tyler Umbright took second in the 3200-meter run with a time of 9:19.19 and was followed by freshman Micah Gainer in third. That pair also helped UHS to a second-place finish in the 4×800 relay, while the Hawks finished third in the Shuttle Hurdles. MHS junior Joel Moreland took second in the Pole Vault at 14-00.00. Day 2 of the 2025 WVSSAC state track and field meet will begin Saturday at 9:00 a.m. from Laidley Field in Charleston.

Hercules Wimbledon AC's senior squad bagged victory in the opening Southern Athletics League Division 2 South & West fixture, largely thanks to their sprinters. In Portsmouth, the squad accumulated 278 points, outpacing the home team, City of Portsmouth AC, which secured 244 points. The team now looks forward to their forthcoming home contest on June 22. Adam Ofeimun had a notable day, achieving personal bests in both the Men's A 100m and 400m races with times of 10.96 and 51.76 seconds, respectively. Ofeimun was well supported in both events. Jaleel Roper clinched victory in the B string 200m, finishing in 22.82 seconds, and secured a strong second place in the B 100m with a time of 11.08 seconds. Under-20 athlete, Javon Blake, was the runner-up in the B 400m, clocking 52.03 seconds. In the men's relay races, Hercules triumphed in both the 4x100m and 4x400m. The 4x100m race was won in 42.72 seconds, nearly three seconds ahead of the nearest competitors, while in the 4x400m, they finished five seconds ahead of Havant. Heather Letley made her mark by winning the Women's A Pole Vault at 1.10m and the B string 400m Hurdles in 1:32.10. In the latter event, Charlotte Gurney earned maximum points, winning by almost nine seconds from her closest rival with a time of 1:18.21. Letley also secured second place in the Women's A 100m Hurdles, Women's B 2000m Steeplechase, and third place in the A Triple Jump and B 3000m. Further victories were recorded in the women's B string long jump, with under-17 Izzy Chimah jumping 4.22m, and the Women's A 3000m, where Chelsea Spanoudakis ran 11:08.69. Spanoudakis also claimed second place in the Women's A 1500m, mirroring Charlotte Lam's result in the B String. For the men, victories came from Christer Hagberg in the Men's A Hammer, Ed Charlesworth in the Men's B 3000m Steeplechase, and Charlie Eastaugh in the Men's A 800m. Beyond Portsmouth, the concluding events of the Surrey County Athletics Championships occurred, with Isabella Harrison dominating the Under-17 Women's 3000m, winning by 38 seconds with a time of 9:47.30. Rose Evans came fourth in the same race. Freia Harper-Tee, who won the Under-15 Girls 1500m crown last weekend, came second over 3000m. James Fraser, in the Under-15 Boys 3000m, secured a bronze medal, running 9:36.50 to finish five seconds ahead of fourth place.

London hoping to host World Athletics Championships 2029

London hopes to host World Athletics Championships in 2029, UK Sport, the Mayor of London and Athletic Ventures announced on Sunday ahead of the 45th running of the London Marathon. A formal expression of interest will be submitted to World Athletics in September, with the bid contingent on securing 45 million pounds (USD 59.91 million) in government support. A feasibility study projects a record-breaking economic and social impact of over 400 million pounds, UK Athletics, Mayor Sadiq Khan and Athletic Ventures said in a statement on Sunday. Athletic Ventures is a joint venture between UK Athletics (UKA), Great Run Company and London Marathon Events. Ethiopia's Samuel Firewu, only five days away from his 21st birthday, stunned the legendary Soufianne El Bakkali with a first-ever victory over the Moroccan in the men's 3000m Steeplechase at the Xiamen Diamond League on Saturday. Simon Kiprop Koech (8:07.12) of Kenya was third. Firewu, who surpassed El Bakkali in the back straight after the final 400m bell, registered a meet record to boot with a World Leading timing of 8:05.61, thereby attesting to talks about him being the future of men's Steeplechase. Avinash Sable, the sole Indian representation in the discipline, finished 13th with a timing of 8:22.59, far cry from his personal best and National Record of 8:09.91. The 30-year-old was competing for the first time since the Diamond League Final in September last year, where he finished ninth with a time of 8 minutes and 17.09 seconds. Earlier, Morocco's Abderrafia Bouassel, who was leading in the first minute, ended up getting a DNF. Firewu's compatriot Hailemariyam Amare led at the 200m mark, registering a timing of 5:26.29.
