The gravity-defying Swede broke the world record for a 13th time on Tuesday, clearing 6.29 metres at the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest, and will be one of the biggest attractions at next month's World Championships in Tokyo. "The natural next step would be 6.30. And I think that would be a huge barrier to cross for me and for the sport in general," Duplantis told reporters on Thursday. "I'll be there soon. And then I guess naturally then I'll just keep looking forward whenever I'm able to cross that, hopefully in the near future. As far as the limit, I don't really think about it." Duplantis first put the world on notice five years ago as a 20-year-old when he cleared 6.17 for the first time, breaking Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie's previous record mark set in 2014. At the Tokyo worlds, which run from September 13-21, he will revisit the site of his Olympic breakthrough, where he won his first of two Games golds in the COVID-delayed 2021 Games. Deprived of a crowd amid public health restrictions due to the pandemic four years ago, Duplantis is eager to return with the full backing of his fans. "I haven't been this excited about a competition maybe ever," said Duplantis, who plans to compete in the Silesia Diamond League meet on Saturday and the top-flight circuit's finale in Zurich later this month. "It's going to be such an amazing stadium when it's more full and has the energy of the crowd. I think that definitely should give me a good push." Pole vault king Duplantis to promote World Athletics Ultimate Championship
Pole vault sensation Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis said he was excited to be part of the growth of athletics after the two-time Olympic champion was handed an ambassadorial role for next year's inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship. World Athletics announced last year it would hold the global championship as a grand conclusion to the 2026 season. It will then take place every two years. In a statement, World Athletics said Duplantis had been named 'Star Athlete' for the event. The governing body added that the pole vaulter would be among the "key collaborators pursuing their cultural passions outside of athletics in music, fashion, art, on-screen, who will promote the new global season-ending championship." The event will take place in Budapest with a record $10 million in prize money on offer. Gold medallists will each receive $150,000 as part of what the sport's world governing body has described as the richest prize pot ever in the sport. Duplantis won his second world title in 2023 in Budapest. He also broke his own pole vault world record there for a 13th time on Tuesday, soaring 6.29 metres at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The Swede said he was hoping to set a new world record during the Ultimate Championship. "We're always looking for new ways to make sure that the spotlight shines on athletics and the Ultimate will light up Budapest," the 25-year-old added. "I have great memories of winning world gold two years ago and remember the incredible atmosphere inside the stadium that night. It would be a dream to break the world record in front of a packed crowd next year. "This event is set to showcase our sport like never before and I can't wait to be a part of it." The championship is scheduled to take place over three evenings next year from September 11 to September 13. Each session will last less than three hours, in a bid to capture the attention of global television viewers. The programme will feature 26 individual events – 16 track and 10 field – and two relays, including the new mixed 4x100m.

Duplantis dominates at Golden Spike in Czech Republic
OSTRAVA: Sweden's Armand Duplantis competes during the Men's Pole Vault event at the 64th Golden Spike athletics meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic on June 24, 2025. – AFP OSTRAVA: Sweden's Armand Duplantis won pole vault at the Golden Spike meet in Czech Republic on Tuesday, as 17-year-old Australian Gout Gout improved his 200 meters personal best to 20.02 seconds. Duplantis cleared 6.13m in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava before failing to get over 6.29 meters for what would have been a new world record nine days after setting his latest one at 6.28m. The 25-year-old double Olympic champion was in a league of his own once again as second-placed Emmanouil Karalis of Greece did not even get close to clearing 6.02m. 'I feel pretty good about it. I can't complain too much. Overall I feel like I jumped really well,' Duplantis said. Gout Gout, who had run 200m in a wind-assisted 19.84 seconds in April, stormed to a convincing win in a new Australian record in his first race in Europe. 'I don't feel any pressure. Because as soon as I step out on that track, it's just me by myself and what I've got to do—my favorite thing, and that's to run,' Gout said. 'So, I just go out there and run and nothing stops me from doing that.' Reigning Olympic champion Grant Holloway lost to US compatriot Dylan Beard in the 110m hurdles for the second time in four days. Holloway only finished fifth at the Diamond League in Paris last Friday as Beard took the second spot. In Ostrava, Beard edged a slowing Holloway on the finish line with both clocking 13.13 seconds. 'This is not the way I execute the race,' Holloway said before admitting 'the time is all right'. South Africa's Prudence Sekgodiso won the women's 800m in 1:57.16, the second fastest time this season. In the 400m, Femke Bol, a triple medalist from the Paris Olympics last year, only took the third spot in her first start in the event this season, after focusing on 400m hurdles. Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain won in 49.15 seconds with Bol clocking 49.98sec. Eighteen-year-old Kenyan Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech won the men's 1,500 meters in 3:29.05, trailing his time in Paris last week by just over a second. Thelma Davies of Liberia topped the women's 100m in an impressive national record of 10.91 seconds. Nigeria's Tobi Amusan won the women's 110m hurdles in 12.45 seconds. Serbia's Adriana Vilagos upset reigning Olympic and Diamond League champion Haruka Kitaguchi to win the women's javelin with 64.87m, topping the Japanese by 99 centimeters. — AFP
