Jewellery store worker rushed to hospital after being struck in head with hammer during armed robbery in Chermside, north of Brisbane

A jewellery store worker has been rushed to hospital with a serious head injury after being struck by a hammer during a horrifying armed robbery north of Brisbane. Initial police investigations indicate four men wearing masks, while armed with hammers and metal bars, charged into a jewellery store on Gympie Road in Chermside about 5pm on Tuesday. Police said the group "smashed a number of glass cabinets and stole a large amount of jewellery" before fleeing the scene in a grey Honda CR-V station wagon. Detectives believe the vehicle was stolen from an address in Calamvale in Brisbane's southern suburbs on Sunday. "A male employee, who was working at the time, was struck in the head with a hammer during the incident," police said in a statement. "He was transported to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a stable condition." A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman told the man suffered a "serious head injury". Paramedics were tasked to the scene about 5.10pm before transporting the worker to hospital. A crime scene has been declared as investigations into the armed robbery continue. Police have urged anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage of the area in the moments before or after the incident to come forward.
