Emerson College Polling survey: Katie Porter, Steve Hilton lead California Governor race after Kamala Harris bows out

(WHTM) – New polling in the California Governor's race shows Katie Porter (D) and Steve Hilton (R) leading the field after former Vice President Kamala Harris decided not to enter the race. The survey showed the former congresswoman Porter leading the field with 18% with a six-point bump since April. Hilton, a media personality and former British policy advisor, received 12% in his first appearance in the Emerson College Polling survey. Kamala Harris says political system is 'broken' during Colbert interview Former Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco (R) received 7%, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D) received 5%, and businessman Rick Caruso (D) received 4% in the Emerson College Polling survey. Thirty-eight percent of voters polled were undecided in the race, down from 54% in April when Harris had not yet announced her intentions to stay out of the race. The survey of 1,000 California voters also showed Governor Gavin Newsom (D) with a 44% approval rating. Voters were largely split on Newsom's plan to potentially redraw congressional districts in response to Texas, with 33% of California voters favoring a redraw, 25% opposed, and 42% undecided. Newsom is also California's early favorite in the 2028 Democratic presidential primary, receiving 23% from the 444 California Democratic primary voters surveyed. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg received 17% and Harris received 11% in her home state. The poll, with a 4.6% margin of error, has New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez with 9% and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear at 5%. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders each had 4%. (WHTM) – A new survey from Emerson College Polling shows former governor Roy Cooper (D) leading early in the North Carolina U.S. Senate race. Subscribe Now The same survey found Cooper to have three times the name recognition of Whatley, and Senator Thom Tillis having the highest unfavorable rating at 43%. Additionally, Emerson College Polling surveyed voters on who they favor in the 2028 presidential race. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg led Democrats with 17%, followed by former Vice President Kamala Harris at 12% and California Governor Gavin Newsom at 10%. What's next for Kamala Harris? On the Republican side, Vice President J.D. Vance overwhelmingly led the field at 53%. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis received 7% followed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. with 5%. Majority disapprove of Trump's handling of Epstein Files: Emerson College Polling survey

(WHTM) – A new survey from Emerson College Polling shows a majority of voters disapprove of the Trump administration's handling of the Epstein Files. The poll, which will be released in its entirety on Friday, shows just 16% of those surveyed approve of the Trump administration's handling of the files, while 51% disapprove. Josh Shapiro responds to 'noise' regarding potential 2028 presidential bid Additionally, voters are split on whether they believe Epstein was murdered or died by suicide in a New York jail back in 2016. Forty-two percent of voters say they believe Epstein was murdered, while 38% are unsure and 20% believe he committed suicide. Forty percent of Republicans surveyed said they believe Epstein was murdered, and 41% are unsure. The survey of 1,400 registered voters also found that 'threats to democracy' is a rising issue for voters, with 23% saying it is the most important issue facing the United States. The top issue remains the economy at 31%, however, that has dropped 10 points since March. Despite the issues surrounding the economy and the Epstein Files, President Donald Trump's approval rating remains largely unchanged at 46% approving. The percentage of voters who disapprove has risen from 41% in January to 47% in the latest Emerson College Polling survey. Democrats are also continuing to hold a slim lead in the generic congressional ballot tracking, with a 44% to 42% lead in July. Trump administration faces scrutiny over Epstein files The top presidential candidates for 2028 were also surveyed, with Vice President J.D. Vance narrowly leading three of the top potential Democratic Party candidates: former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and California Governor Gavin Newsom (D).
