Book festival in Dumbarton receives more than £5000 funding

The 2 Rivers Children's Book Festival planning group will use the allocation of £5360 from the area's Common Good Fund, to promote, plan and host the inaugural event. The planning team, made up of three members, is looking to promote children's literacy, creativity, and love of reading through free, inclusive festival events. They also want to support and work in partnership with local schools, libraries, authors, and community organisations while ensuring access to cultural opportunities for children and families in Dumbarton and surrounding areas. Another aim of the book festival is to encourage a lifelong love for reading by making books fun, relevant and accessible. The proposals were presented to members of the corporate services committee on Wednesday but concerns were raised by Councillor Chris Pollok over the lack of a charity number. READ MORE: Plans to axe centre and change nursery provision - have your say Councillor Pollok said: 'This is an unknown group and this is the first year of the festival so there is no charity number. 'I am concerned that we can't hold them to account if the money is not spent correctly. Are there any disclosure checks carried out on the three members?' Chief Officer Laurence Slavin said there were no disclosure checks as historically groups applying for funding were well known. Mr Slavin said: 'I take the point you are making and maybe if this was a £50,000, £60,000 or £250,000 application, my risk flag would probably be flying a lot harder than a thousand pounds as a one off. 'That doesn't mean we should be too blase about the award. 'We wouldn't necessarily go down the route of assessing who the members are but if that is what the committee wants us to do because of the nature of this application we could go back and have another look to see what we can bring forward to a future committee.' READ MORE: 16 Glasgow secondaries to start new school year with no library staff Other councillors acknowledged and understood the concerns raised but believed this could be a way to encourage more children to read. Councillor Fiona Henebry said: 'Having set up a charity and applied for funding which ran before we had a charity status, I know how hard it is to get funding. 'A book festival within West Dunbartonshire, which is going to be a free event, where you can take kids along to is [welcome] as some kids will never have had books or experienced them before they go to nursery or school. 'It is £5000 and it is a new group but I really think it is something that could run every year within West Dunbartonshire or bi-annually as they have stated in their application form. 'We should be supporting this group to get established and put on this festival for the kids in the hope that more of them do pick up a book and start reading and get back into literature. 'I think that is a positive way to go and get off tech.'

Rutherglen Glencairn co-boss relishes Pollok clash as 'why we fought for promotion'

Joe Pryce reckons Pollok are the biggest club at their level Joe Pryce says Rutherglen Glencairn face a cup final on Saturday as they host giants Pollok – and that's why they fought to be in the West of Scotland Premier Division. ‌ Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Hurlford left Glens with a point from their two games in the top flight so far, and co-boss Pryce says it's a step up from last season in the First Division. ‌ He said: 'We know we've got another stiff test on Saturday, and you're in this league to play against the biggest clubs. ‌ 'No matter how much money other clubs have, Pollok are still the biggest club at this level, and that's our first home game in this league. 'That's where you want to be. If anybody talks about teams at this level, the first team that comes up is Pollok, closely followed by Auchinleck Talbot. 'That's the task we face on Saturday, it's the first home game of the season and it will be a good day for us, so hopefully we can get a positive result. ‌ 'There's no time to feel sorry for yourself in this league, because there's just another big name coming round the corner. 'We dust ourselves off, we know we let ourselves down, and have to improve, so us as coaching staff have to find a solution. ‌ 'We were disappointed on Saturday, especially with our first-half performance, when we felt we let ourselves down a wee bit. 'We were a wee bit better in the second half, but it's the Premier Division, and if you're off it slightly you give yourself a mountain to climb – and we did.' Pryce added: 'If you're 2-0 down at half-time to seasoned Premier club like Hurlford, it's difficult to get back in. ‌ 'In the First Division last year we won quite a few games 3-2, came back late on to get a 2-2 draw or something, but you're not going to do that in the Premier League. 'That's a lesson learned, and thankfully it has came in the second game.' Pryce hopes to add at least one more face to his squad, and says the loans market is an angle he's pursuing. He said: 'There's one that is going to be coming in this week, but he's a loan signing, so we need to wait for the other club to be ready. We're still looking, but it's not easy. The finance is the problem. 'It takes hard work from the players and staff, but that's the design we have, and we'll stand or fall by the principles we have.'

Barrhead memorial match honours junior football legends

The event at Dunterlie Park in Barrhead was held in memory of Iain Ashcroft and Steven Convery, former Arthurlie and Pollok players who passed away recently. Iain played for both Arthurlie and Pollok, among other clubs such as Albion Rovers and Hamilton Accies. He won the Scottish Junior Cup in 1997 with Pollok and coached at Beith Juniors following his playing career. Meanwhile, Steven was a key player when Arthurlie beat Pollok 4-0 to lift the Scottish Junior Cup in 1998. He went on to play for Clyde and Hamilton Accies. Iain died in 2023 at the age of 60, while Steven passed away in November 2024, aged 52. The memorial match took place between ex-players from Arthurlie and Pollok, with Pollok winning 4-2 to lift the Iain Ashcroft Memorial Cup, and the Steven Convery Award for Man of the Match going to Garry McCann. "Both of these great players died too soon, but have left supporters of these two great clubs with unforgettable memories. "In the humble surroundings of Dunterlie and Newlandsfield, they thrilled and entertained junior football supporters when the game was, arguably, at its peak. "Sunday wasn't a day for tears, it was a time for memories and celebration, of old friends and foes doing battle alongside one another one more time to remember these icons of the junior game. "To see hundreds of people stream through the gates and to relive some of the brilliant times gone by was a highlight for so many people, and we are delighted with the turnout." The match raised £2450 for anti-sectarian charity Nil by Mouth. Donations were received from Neilston FC, Barrhead Youth Football Club, SC Doors and Shutters, and the Brig Inn. Dave Scott, director of Nil by Mouth, said: "It is a great honour for our charity to be selected to benefit from the kindness of the junior football community. "We are deeply grateful to organiser Robert Burns, the former players from both clubs, and Arthurlie for hosting the event. "It reminds us that football can be something that brings people together and turns us and them into we. "People have come along and dipped into their pockets to remember two real legends of the game in this part of Scotland, and we will be able to work with hundreds of young people in Barrhead and beyond thanks to their kindness."

Arthurlie and Pollok legends roll back years in memory of Steve Convery and Iain Ashcroft

Two giants of the junior game have been lost too early in the last two years but will be remembered in Sunday's Iain Ashcroft Memorial Cup, with the outstanding player on the day receiving the Steven Convery Man of the Match. Legends of the Junior game will renew friendly rivalries when they pull the boots back on this weekend in memory of two icons. ‌ Former Arthurlie striker Steve Convery and ex- Pollok defender Iain Ashcroft both lifted the Scottish Junior Cup with their respective sides in the late 1990s. ‌ Convery, who went on to star for Clyde and Hamilton Accies after helping Lie win the Junior Cup in 1998, died suddenly last November at the age of 52. ‌ Ashcroft, who had two stints with Arthurlie with a spell at Hamilton in between before a hugely successful spell at Pollok, tragically passed away in 2023. Now former team mates and friends will gather at Arthurlie's Dunterlie Park on Sunday where they will compete for the Iain Ashcroft Memorial Cup, with the outstanding player on the day receiving the Steven Convery Man of the Match award. Organiser Robert Burns said: 'If there are two names that defined the rivalry between Pollok and Arthurlie in the 90s it has to be Iain Ashcroft and Steven Convery.
