Bruno Ponce and his wife Graciana have been serving up handcrafted Italian specialties to a devoted following of locals who consider this place their best-kept secret. "I love the comfortability, the food, the atmosphere — everyone is always so pleasant and peaceful here," said longtime customer Alessandro Patricolo. His favorite?: "The burrata on the focaccia." Phillip Jakubiszen, another frequent visitor, raves about the consistently high quality. "Everything is so fresh, [and] delicious," he said. "I mean, so many of the different paninis we've had, the gnocchi, I mean everything. You can't go wrong, it's second to none, honestly." What sets Mimmo's apart isn't just the food. It's the fact that everything you taste here is made from scratch, starting with the star of the show - fresh mozzarella. Every morning, Ponce pulls mozzarella using traditional techniques, transforming simple cheese curds into creamy perfection with no additives. His dedication to freshness means early mornings and careful attention to detail. "We start every day at five in the morning to meet the production," Ponce explained. "We start to keep them fresh." Though Ponce hails from Argentina, his grandfather was Italian, and that influence is evident in every corner: from the market filled with imported authentic products to the fascinating cheese-aging cooler, which showcases the traditional process. Some of their aged cheeses require patience. "We have to wait two months [for] aging, and then the cheese is coming ready," Ponce said. Mimmo's offers take-out, delivery and sit-down dining. Their classic cheese platter features freshly made creamy burrata with Parma Cotta ham and four other house-made cheeses, served with incredible homemade focaccia bread. The experience transports diners straight to Italy. The restaurant's classic panini sandwich with fresh mozzarella, tomato, prosciutto di Parma, and pesto sauce on a baguette perfectly captures the essence of Italian simplicity and quality. Mimmo's is open seven days a week, and a significant part of their business involves selling their delicious products to hotels and restaurants throughout the area. Chilean business magnate Ponce exits firms with stakes in lithium miner SQM
SANTIAGO (Reuters) - Chilean business magnate Julio Ponce will leave several of his companies, he said in a statement on Thursday, while the firms announced a broader restructuring that seeks to merge units into fewer entities. They include firms that hold significant stakes in Chilean lithium producer SQM. Ponce said he was passing on control to his family, notably his daughter Francisca Ponce, who would be advised by his brother Eugenio Ponce. "I have decided to announce that I will no longer be a protagonist in this story," said Ponce, 79, the former son-in-law of the late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. Separately on Thursday, his companies announced plans to simplify their organization by merging into fewer companies in filings to the South American nation's stock exchange. Pampa Group, as the collection of Ponce's sprawling corporate empire is known, is one of SQM's top shareholders alongside China's Tianqi. Both hold just over a fifth of shares each, according to the country's market regulator. "I bequeath the control and direction, in both professional and patrimonial spheres, of what is coming to my family," Ponce said. There are growing fears that Luis Diaz may have played his final game for Liverpool after the forward's girlfriend penned an emotional letter to fans on social media. TBI: Man charged after shooting, injuring Johnson County deputy in April
MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A North Carolina man has been charged after authorities said he shot and injured a deputy after a pursuit in Johnson County last month. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) announced Friday that agents obtained warrants charging Joey Allen Ponce, 34, with attempted murder and other charges. On April 22, Johnson County deputies spotted a vehicle that was the subject of a Be On The Lookout (BOLO) out of Watauga County, N.C. that was being driven by Ponce, who was wanted in connection to an armed robbery from earlier that day, according to the TBI. VDOT reopens Route 58 in Damascus; Gov. Youngkin in attendance When deputies initiated a traffic stop, Ponce allegedly refused to stop and a pursuit ensued. He then got out of the vehicle in the 5000 block of Highway 421 and fired shots at deputies, according to the TBI. Ponce allegedly ran through a gravel lot and fired more shots, striking and injuring a deputy. Deputies returned fire and struck Ponce, who was taken to a hospital for treatment. Ponce was served with the warrants upon his release from the hospital Friday and was taken to the Carter County Jail, where he was booked on a $750,000 bond. He faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of evading arrest, one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and one count of possession of stolen property, according to the TBI. The Philippines supports Malaysia's call for Asean unity in US tariff talks
MANILA/KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The Philippines and Malaysia continue to deepen their longstanding relations through shared priorities and active collaboration, both bilaterally as well as within Asean, said Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Maria Angela A. Ponce (pic) . She reaffirmed the Philippines' support for Malaysia's leadership and commitment to preserving Asean's relevance as a unified economic bloc, especially in the face of shifting global economic dynamics. "Asean with a population of over 600 million, holds significant influence as the world's fourth-largest economic bloc. "We must work together to leverage our collective strength,' she said during an interview with Bernama TV recently. During a briefing session on the US tariffs at a special Parliament session on Monday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised the need for Asean to adopt a collective position on the issue, reflecting the regional bloc's solidarity and economic strength in engaging with the US. Ponce also expressed the Philippine's confidence in Malaysia's leadership as this year's Asean Chair, noting that Malaysia has shown adaptability and clarity in addressing complex challenges. "The Philippines, which will chair Asean in 2026, continues to coordinate closely with Malaysia on key issues such as the South China Sea and the ongoing situation in Myanmar,' she said She also voiced the Philippines' support for Timor-Leste's progress towards full Asean membership, acknowledging the challenges involved but expressing optimism about the country's commitment and integration into the regional framework. "We are confident in Timor-Leste's ability to meet Asean's membership requirements,' she said. On bilateral ties, the ambassador highlighted key areas of growing engagements between the two countries. These include halal cooperation, tourism, the digital economy, and Islamic finance, all of which have seen significant progress under the leadership of President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr and Anwar. The Philippines has benefitted from Malaysia's experience and expertise in the halal industry development. "Malaysia's halal ecosystem is one of the best in the world. "Through training and capacity-building programmes, we have been able to enhance our frameworks, and Malaysia's guidance has been invaluable," she added. Ponce also emphasised the importance of people-to-people ties as the foundation of both bilateral and regional cooperation, underscoring the need to continue engaging the younger generation in shaping the future of bilateral relations. "Youth exchange programmes, educational linkages, and shared initiatives in digital innovation are essential for ensuring that ties between Malaysia and the Philippines remain dynamic and forward-looking,' she said. Tourism was also highlighted as a growing sector, with Malaysia consistently ranking among the top ten sources of visitors to the Philippines. "We are now looking to expand Islamic tourism, including the availability of halal-certified facilities to cater to Muslim travellers,' she said. Interest in Islamic finance is also gaining momentum, noted Ponce, highlighting that the Philippine central bank recently held a roadshow in Malaysia to attract investment in the sector. She emphasised that Islamic finance complements broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, making it appealing not only to the Muslim community but also to a wider audience seeking ethical and sustainable financial solutions. Ponce also encouraged Malaysian businesses to participate in upcoming trade events in the Philippines, including the International Food Exhibition (IFEX) Philippines from May 10 to 12, and Manila FAME, a premier lifestyle and design showcase, slated for October 17 to 19.
