Changes coming to Ponchatoula Strawberry Fest
PONCHATOULA, La. (WGNO) — Officials with the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival announced changes to the event's operations. In a public safety announcement, fest officials state that in light of the recent shooting at Memorial Park on the second day of the festival, the hours have been adjusted. In response, and after much thoughtful discussion, we have taken proactive steps to ensure that the festival remains a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees in the years to come,' said Chief of Ponchatoula Police Department Bry Layrisson. In collaboration with the Strawberry Festival Board, Layrisson and Mayor Wesley Daniels decided the hours of operation will be: Friday: 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Sunday: 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Festival officials said the decision was not made lightly. Multi-vehicle crash in Baton Rouge leaves two injured
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A multi-vehicle crash in the 3800 block of Claycut Road on Wednesday, April 16, injured two people—one critically. The Baton Rouge Police Department responded to the scene around 1:35 p.m. and launched an investigation into the collision. According to BRPD, the crash involved a 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 and a 2024 Acura Integra. Preliminary findings indicate the GMC was traveling eastbound on Claycut Road, while the Acura was heading westbound. The crash occurred when the Acura attempted to make a left turn onto Steele Boulevard and entered the path of the oncoming GMC. The passenger side of the Acura was hit in the impact. Both occupants of the Acura were transported to a nearby hospital. The passenger sustained life-threatening injuries, while the driver suffered moderate injuries, police said. The driver of the GMC remained at the scene and was not injured. Six in custody following Strawberry Festival shooting of two teens
PONCHATOULA, La. (WGNO) — The Ponchatoula Police Department released the names of the individuals involved in a shooting that left two people hospitalized. The shooting happened on Saturday, April 12 near Memorial Park where the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival was taking place. New Orleans escapee flees court, cuts ankle monitor: NOPD According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to shots fired near the festival's ticket booth around 9:25 p.m. Deputies arrived to find two teenage male victims. One suffered a graze wound but the other was shot in his abdomen. They were taken to a hospital for treatment. Through an investigation, PPD officers identified six suspects and issued arrest warrants for: 18-year-old Camryn Finley 18-year-old Dealvin Davis 18-year-old Courtney McGee 19-year-old Markus Dokes 18-year-old Quentrel Smith 20-year-old Quenton Smith Jr. All suspects face a charge of terrorizing but Finely faces an additional charge of attempted second-degree murder and Davis faces a principal to attempt second-degree murder charge. Four people wounded in French Quarter shooting Sunday: NOPD
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a quadruple shooting that happened in the French Quarter. Around 8:25 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, NOPD officers responded to the corner of Iberville and Decatur streets on a call to a shooting in the area. Upon arrival, four victims were found suffering from gunshot wounds. They were taken to a hospital by EMS. Two people shot at Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival: TPSO, PPD An update on their conditions were not given. In a press conference following the shooting, NOPD Captain Samuel Palumbo stated an officer witness the suspect fire a weapon as they were moving a large crowd out of the area following French Quarter Fest. One person was taken into custody. 'What this shows, is how brazen this perpetrator is. We have officers with lights and sirens on basically surrounding the area and still chooses to do this,' said Palumbo. No further details are available at this time. Former LSU receiver Kyren Lacy reportedly dead
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First News) — Former LSU standout wide receiver Kyren Lacy was found dead Saturday night in Houston, according to ESPN. Lacy, 24, who had been projected as a potential pick in this year's NFL Draft, was previously involved in a December car crash that left an elderly man dead. The incident had cast uncertainty over his future in football and led to ongoing legal scrutiny. The Thibodaux native played at LSU from 2022-2024 after spending a season with the Ragin' Cajuns. His final season was his best, catching 58 passes for 866 yards and nine touchdowns. The cause of death has not been officially confirmed. See updates here.
