Big Ten alters start time for Iowa baseball semifinal vs. UCLA

Big Ten alters start time for Iowa baseball semifinal vs. UCLA As No. 3 seed Iowa baseball (33-21-1, 21-9 Big Ten) prepares for its Big Ten Tournament semifinal vs. No. 2 seed and No. 13-ranked UCLA (41-15, 22-8), the Hawkeyes and Bruins will both take the field earlier than expected today due to Friday's inclement weather in Omaha, Neb., creating a schuduling delema. After a prolonged rain delay that eventually resulted in a postponement of Friday night's Pool A clinching matchup between No. 1 seed Oregon (42-13, 22-8) and No. 8 seed Nebraska (29-27, 15-15) from Charles Schwab Field, the Big Ten reshuffled the Saturday schedule so that the Ducks and Cornhuskers begin today at 9 a.m. CT. The conference announced late Friday night that it had swapped the two semifinal game times to provide adequate rest for the winner of Pool A prior to its semifinal clash vs. No. 9 seed Penn State (33-22, 15-15). Due to the shifted schedule, Iowa and UCLA will now play at 1 p.m. CT, and the other semifinal will begin at approximately 5 p.m. CT. Both games will still be broadcast on the Big Ten Network alongside play-by-play voice Connor Onion and color analyst Scott Pose. While the earlier time only shortens both programs' preparation window, the Hawkeyes' "must-win" mentality against the Bruins remains the same. While UCLA's current RPI ranking essentially guarantees them at least an at-large bid in this year's NCAA Tournament regardless of today's outcome, the only way the Hawkeyes can secure a ticket to the NCAAs is by claiming the Big Ten Tournament crown and the conference's automatic bid. Unbeaten Blitzboks surge into semis

The Blitzboks will face New Zealand in the semis at 22:46 (SA time) on Sunday evening. The Blitzboks qualified for the semi-finals of the SVNS World Championship following a clean sweep of their Pool A rivals in Los Angeles. Philip Snyman's charges kicked off their campaign with a 19-10 win against France 19-10 on Saturday, before edging out Great Britain (12-7) and SVNS league winners Argentina (29-21) at Dignity Health Sports Park on day 1 of the tournament. They next face traditional foes New Zealand, who tied on seven points with Australia but advanced due to superior points difference. Kick-off is at 12am on Monday (SA time). After an impressive performance against France, the SA side were on the money again against Team GB, with two tries within the first five minutes putting them into the fast lane towards victory. First Ronald Brown kicked ahead in the opening minute of play, regathered and scored for a 7-0 lead before Shilton van Wyk chased down his own kick as well to score his 50th try in sevens. Leading 12-0, the Blitzboks were in cruise control, but then stepped off the gas, allowing their opponents to claw their way back into the match. Freddie Roddick scored on the buzzer for a converted try, giving the UK side something of a sniff in the second half. The second half remained scoreless, but went from one side to the other as both sides had their moments, but could not convert. Some good scrambling defence by the Blitzboks proved vital as they held out their opponents to secure their second win of the day. In the first match, the French started very well and pressured the Blitzboks into mistakes, which led to two unanswered tries by Varian Pasquet and Simon Desert to give them a 10-point lead. Great character to fight back The Blitzboks knuckled down and showed great character to fight back after going down 10-0 late in the first half. Selvyn Davids' late try before the break, from a great grubber into space, meant the teams swapped sides with France leading by 10-7. The second half belonged to the Blitzboks, who held onto possession much better as they worked to find space, with Shilton van Wyk and Zain Davids adding their names to the score sheet. Van Wyk circled the French defence on the right wing before Zain Davids ran the perfect angle onto a short pass into space by Ricardo Duarttee to give the Blitzboks a nine-point lead. France lost a player to the sin bin and the game finished as the South Africans showed some real grit on defence to deny their opponents a losing bonus-point. South Africa wrapped up the opening day with a five-tries-to-three win against the Argentines – Brown, Van Wyk, Ryan Oosthuizen, Selvyn Davids and Siviwe Soyizwapi crossing the whitewash for the men in green and gold. Hong Kong Sevens: New Zealand set up women's semi-final with Canada, Australia face France

A quirk in the draw at the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens on Saturday saw New Zealand beat Brazil twice in a row to set up a Sunday semi-final against Canada, a repeat of last summer's Paris Olympics gold medal match. Advertisement The Hong Kong draw has still, more logically, kept the Black Ferns on track to meet Australia in a final many hoped to see at Kai Tak Stadium on Sunday. The New Zealanders saw off Brazil for the second time by 31-17, while Australia recorded a 35-5 win over USA and will face France in the last four. 'We know Canada is going to be a tough one,' said Mahina Paul, scorer of the Black Ferns' fifth and final try of the match. 'We know Canada always show up when we play, but we talk a lot about just sticking to what we do and not worrying about every other team like that.' Australia's Maddison Levi (left) evades a USA tackle. Photo: Sam Tsang Hours before they met in the last eight, New Zealand saw off the Brazilians 29-17 in the final Pool A fixture, a result that meant the South Americans qualified for the quarter-final as the second-best third-placed team.
