Poppy Atkinson, 10, died from head injuries

A 10-year-old girl died from head injuries after being struck by a car during a football training session, an inquest has heard. The hearing into the death of Poppy Atkinson from Kendal opened earlier at Cockermouth Coroners' Court following the footballer's funeral on Monday. Acting senior coroner, Kirsty Gomersal, said the circumstances were "well publicised" and that Poppy was struck by a car at Kendal Rugby Union Football Club on 5 March. The hearing, which lasted for less than five minutes, was adjourned while the police investigation is ongoing, Ms Gomersal said. A 40-year-old man from Lancaster, arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, has been released under investigation. The inquest heard that Poppy's death was confirmed by paramedics at 17:12 GMT. Cumbria Police said that officers had responded to reports of two children being struck by a black BMW i40. No relatives were in court for the hearing, but they were represented by a solicitor. A second girl, aged eight and also from Kendal, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. At the time, officers said there was "no indication to suggest that this incident was a deliberate act". Hundreds of people lined the streets of Kendal on Monday as Poppy's funeral took place. Mourners wore red clothing in memory of the Manchester United supporter, whose family had urged the community to create a "sea of love". An online fundraiser set up in her memory has exceeded £50,000 and will pay for a memorial as well as support grassroots football. Follow BBC Cumbria on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram. Poppy Atkinson: Funeral held for schoolgirl Manchester United fan who died after being struck by car

People in a Cumbrian town have come together to mark the life of Poppy Atkinson, the Manchester United-supporting schoolgirl who died after being struck by a car while playing on a sports pitch. Mourners at the talented young footballer's funeral service were asked to wear red by the 10-year-old's family. They also requested that anyone lining the streets of Kendal, Cumbria, pay their respects by wearing red or football shirts. An artist's impression of the youngster with a football by her side, in a poppy field looking at Old Trafford, had been painted on to one side of the coffin. Poppy's parents, Ben and Clare, and seven-year-old brother Edward, as well as other members of her family, were in the congregation at Kendal Parish Church. Players and officials from local junior football teams, many wearing Manchester United shirts with the number 10 and Poppy on the back were also there. Mourners formed a "guard of honour" in the church grounds where earlier four young boys with "Poppy" football shirts kicked a football around. Tributes were read out by her parents, her headteacher at Old Hutton CE Primary School, Nick Turley, and one of her local football coaches, Corey Smith. Classmates from the school's choir sang a pop medley for the congregation in her honour. Hundreds of mourners clapped as the funeral procession made its way through the town centre later. A private burial followed. Following Poppy's death, her family said the schoolgirl, who was in the under-12s team at Kendal United and also played at county level, was "100% determined to be a professional footballer", and one day play for Manchester United. Her family said Poppy idolised the team and England players Ella Toone and Kobbie Mainoo, as well as Lioness Georgia Stanway and former Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi "to name a few". Police investigating the collision during a football practice session at Kendal Rugby Club earlier this month arrested a 40-year-old man from Lancaster on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was later released from custody.

Town turns red as funeral held for 10-year-old Man United fan Poppy Atkinson

The home town of avid Manchester United supporter Poppy Atkinson turned red in memory of the youngster tragically killed in a collision with a car on a sports pitch. The family of the 10-year-old from Kendal, Cumbria, requested that mourners at her funeral service, and those lined on surrounding roads to pay their respects, wear red, or any football shirt. People watched on in silence, some wiping away tears, as the cortege passed en route to Monday's service. The youngster's coffin sported a poignant artist's impression of the youngster, with a football by her side, in a poppy field looking ahead to Old Trafford's 'Theatre of Dreams' stadium with the sun on the horizon. Poppy's parents, Ben and Clare, and seven-year-old brother Edward, joined other family members and friends in the congregation at Kendal Parish Church. Also in attendance were players and officials from local junior football teams, with many wearing Manchester United shirts with the number 10 and Poppy on the back. Mourners formed a 'guard of honour' in the church grounds where earlier four young boys with 'Poppy' football shirts kicked around a football. Inside, tributes to the talented footballer were read out by her parents, her headteacher at Old Hutton CE Primary School, Nick Turley, and one of her local football coaches, Corey Smith. Classmates from the school's choir sang a pop medley for the congregation in her honour. Other music played was Anna Kendrick's Get Back Up Again from The Trolls movie soundtrack, Can You Die From A Broken Heart? by Nate Smith and Avril Lavigne and the service's closing tune Beautiful Things by Benson Boone. On the front of the order of service was a photograph of Poppy playing football with the accompanying message 'Dare To Dream'. Later hundreds applauded as the funeral procession would its way through Highgate in the town centre. A private burial followed. Following Poppy's death, her family said the schoolgirl, who was in the under-12s team at Kendal United and also played at county level, was '100% determined to be a professional footballer'. They added: 'Many who know her, and who know her determination to improve and win, had no doubt she would achieve her goal to one day to play for Manchester United. 'Poppy touched so many lives, it was easy to see why, her energy, character, spirit and passion for football was infectious and touched huge numbers of people.' Her family said Poppy idolised United and England players Ella Toone and Kobbie Mainoo as well as Lioness Georgia Stanway and former Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi 'to name a few'. A police investigation into the collision during a football practice session with a BMW i4 electric car at Kendal Rugby Club on March 5 remains ongoing. A 40-year-old man from Lancaster arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving was later released from custody.

Met Office reveals best time to see Northern Lights in UK this week

The Northern Lights could make yet another appearance in UK skies this week, the Met Office has said. The stunning night sky display, also known as the aurora borealis, is typically only seen in northern latitudes, like Sweden, Norway, and northern Canada. However, the Northern Lights are more intense and frequent at the moment thanks to the solar cycle. The Sun is currently at the peak of its 11-year cycle, with high levels of activity from the Sun increasing the chance of spectacular aurora displays until around mid-2025.. The Northern Lights are more common during an equinox due to an alignment of the Earth's magnetic field with solar wind, the charged particles that trigger geomagnetic storms and, in turn, aurora displays. After the Met Office forecast an "enhancement in solar activity" on Sunday evening (March 23), the weather agency has said aurora sightings might be possible for northern parts of the UK again this week. The Met Office said: "There is a continuing chance of aurora sightings at times across northern Scotland this coming week, given clear night-time skies. This is due to further possible weak coronal mass ejections glances, along with another faster stream of solar winds arriving later mid-week." According to Met Office aurora maps, the best time to see the Northern Lights is on Tuesday evening (March 25). The aurora could be visible from around 9pm and peak at around midnight (March 26). The Northern Lights could also be visible the following night, with the aurora forecast to peak at midnight (March 27). The Northern Lights are caused by large explosions of activity from the Sun, which throw out huge amounts of charged particles – called solar wind – into space. Massive explosions on the Sun are known as 'coronal mass ejections', according to the Greenwich Royal Observatory. These particles stream away from the Sun at around one million miles per hour, the Met Office says. When they are captured by the Earth's magnetic field they can collide with gas molecules in the atmosphere in an event called a geomagnetic storm. Light is emitted from these collisions at various wavelengths, forming spectacular colourful displays in the sky. In its four-day space weather forecast, the Met Office said a "coronal hole fast wind" could arrive from March 25 onwards, bringing a chance of "minor" geomagnetic storms.
