Tesco hikes price of popular supermarket meal deal as part of huge shake-up

The supermarket chain has hiked the price of its Tesco Finest Dine In deal by £3. The Dine in deal for two includes one main course, one side, and a dessert, plus an alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverage. It is popular with pairs wanting the restaurant experience at home, and other major supermarket chains also offer similar deals. The deal's price used to be £12, but it has now risen to £15 - a 25% rise. Tesco says the move came after it improved its ingredients. It also noted that the meal deal offering still saved customers up to £22.50 compared to buying the dishes separately. However, it is important to note that Tesco's Valentine's Dine In deal also had the same price tag of £15. A Tesco spokesperson told Sky News said: "We have worked to improve the quality across our Finest Dine In range, investing in the ingredients and recipes, and introducing an updated menu. They added: "Finest Dine In offers great value and is a delicious, convenient alternative to dining out at a fraction of the price." The price hike comes as Tesco expands the items available in the Dine In deal for spring. Nine new dishes were added, giving customers the choice of over 25 items for their evening meal. One of the new spring-inspired recipes includes a Pork Crackling Joint with a Norfolk Cider Jus. The dish - priced at £7.50 by itself - features a slow cooked rind-on pork belly and a sachet of pork and cider cream sauce. According to Tesco's website, the pork has been cooked for three hours and 30 minutes and has been "expertly prepared" for crispy crackling. Tesco says this menu item pairs well with a "crisp" white wine. Another new item is its Manchego Stuffed Chicken Breasts. Priced at £7.50 on its own, it sees two chicken breasts stuffed with cheddar cheese, full-fat soft cheese, Manchego, and red pepper melt in a sundried tomato sauce, with marinated semi-dried cherry tomatoes with a smoked paprika and chilli sprinkle. Other new additions to Tesco's spring menu include a Ranch Steak with Cafe De Paris Melt, Creamy Chicken, Bacon and leek Pie, and Beef Brisket with Bone Marrow and Cabernet Sauvignon Sauce. For sides, customers can choose from options like Creamy Buttery Mash, Triple Cook Chips with Cornish Sea Salt, and Creamed Spinach. One of the new additions also includes parmentier potatoes with a lemon and herb aioli. For dessert, Tesco has introduced a new Lemon & Stem Ginger Posset, which combines whipping cream with Sicilian lemon juice and crystallised stem ginger pieces. Alongside this, shoppers can pick up Belgian dark chocolate & mascarpone cheesecake Slices and passion fruit and raspberry cheesecake slices. All the dessert options cost £3.50 on their own. To whet the whistle, you can choose from alcoholic options such as Finest South African Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc, alongside non-alcoholic alternatives like Coke Zero and Lucky Saint Alcohol Free Lager. As mentioned earlier, other supermarket chains offer their own Dine In deal, with some being much cheaper. Asda's meal deal is one of the cheapest options with a starter, main, side and dessert for £9.97. Meanwhile, at Waitrose, it costs £12 for a main, a side and either a starter or dessert. M&S offers a variety of different Dine In options at different price points.

Tesco customers furious over price hike to popular meal deal
TESCO has hiked the cost of its popular Finest Dine In meal deal, sparking a backlash from customers. The offer, consisting of a main, side, dessert and drink for two people, previously cost £12 with a Clubcard, but has now risen to £15. This week Tesco unveiled its new menu for the deal which has over twenty items to choose from, including nine new ones. New Spring-inspired recipes include a Pork Crackling Joint with Cider Jus, Manchego Stuffed Chicken and Lemon & Stem Ginger Posset. The range still includes a number of customer favourites such as Lasagne al Forno and Salted Caramel Profiteroles, alongside a range of drink options including beers, Finest wines and various non-alcoholic alternatives. Tesco said it has improved the quality of the range, but customers have slammed the change on social media. One user on Reddit said: 'Used to occasionally buy at £12 but this pushes it for me, not simply because of the price but because of the greed." Another added: 'I buy them (the meal deal) once a month and was happy at £12 as other half likes the red wine with it but not paying £15.' A third said: 'It was actually an 'ok' deal for £12. For £15 you can just get a nice-ish takeaway. Maybe a kebab.' In October, ready-meals fans were angry because M&S hiked its popular Gastropub dine-in deal by 25 per cent, from £12 to £15. Earlier this year Tesco increased the cost of its deal on ready meals, with the cost of two of its Finest ready meals rising from £7.50 to £8 with a Clubcard. The change comes amid a refreshed menu for Tesco shoppers, which has seen nine new products introduced to the range – bringing the total of mix and match options up to 20. This spring, customers will be able to enjoy fresh dishes including a Pork Crackling Joint with Cider Jus, Lemon & Stem Ginger Posset, and even a Manchego Stuffed Chicken. When it comes to sides, there's still plenty of potato-shaped goodness – with the Triple Cook Chips (complete with Cornish sea salt) and the Golden-Baked Potato Dauphinoise. Yes, that's right, we're talking about Pot Noodles. The instant noodle snack food has been added to the supermarket's offering, but there's a bit of a catch – it's only available in selected stores across the UK and it's only one specific flavour you can get. Customers can add the Chicken & Mushroom Pot Noodle (90g) as a snack in their meal deal, which costs £4 or £3.60 for Clubcard holders. This side option will be offered in 50 Tesco stores nationwide. However, not all shoppers are happy about the change. Posting in the r/Tesco Subreddit, @Leather-Assistant902 said the previous £12 deal was 'okay.' They argued that for £15, 'you can just get a nice-ish takeaway' instead. @Splodge89 took issue with the portion sizes, writing that 'the idea that this deal is enough for two people is hilarious.' In their opinion, the 'mains almost always need something else to go with.' 'I'm not saying I'd eat one all to myself, but the two portions for a main and a side is pathetic,' they added, while @Exciting-Trick4575 said they 'used to buy these meal deals as a treat,' but 'won't be anymore.' But in @PositiveTurnover8923's view, 'the chicken and leek pie with chunky chips is definitely enough for two.' This isn't the only change Tesco has made of late. Earlier this month, the supermarket confirmed that a single Glazed Original Krispy Kreme now technically counts as a 'snack' item as part of both the regular and premium meal deals.
