Erickson holds one shot UAE Challenge lead

Dan Erickson holds a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the UAE Challenge at Al Zorah Golf & Yacht Club in Ajman. The American fired a nine-under-par third round of 63 to tie the course record. The 26-year-old picked up five shots on the front nine, including three birdies in a row from the fourth hole, before adding four more on the back nine. Erickson, who recently finished tied for sixth at the Porsche Singapore Classic on the DP World Tour, was delighted with his third-round effort at Al Zorah, moving to 16-under-par for the tournament. 'I didn't really have a good warm-up, but as soon as I got out there, I kind of found something and rolled with it the whole day. I hit my approaches really well, which I've been struggling with lately—especially some of the wedges. They were really solid strokes and well controlled,' he said. After earning DP World Tour status during last year's Q School, Erickson is hoping his experiences on golf's global tour will benefit him as he chases his first HotelPlanner Tour victory. 'It was a great experience playing in the final group in Singapore, and I'll be in the final group tomorrow. That experience—just staying in the present, sticking to my process, and trying not to worry about what everyone else is doing—should help.' Italian Renato Paratore and South African JC Ritchie are one shot back on 15-under-par. Ritchie, who began the third round with a share of the lead, signed for a 67, while Paratore—winner of the 2020 Betfred British Masters—carded a 64. Irishman Mark Power is at 13 under, followed by Italy's Filippo Celli and France's Oihan Guillamoundeguy, who are one shot further back. Dubai resident Adri Arnaus remains in the hunt at 11 under after carding a three-under 69, while Joshua Grenville-Wood—representing the Emirates Golf Federation and the UAE—is three shots further back. Lady luck proved unkind to the UAE's Ahmad Skaik when his driver broke on the back nine. With no spare, the 27-year-old was forced to use his 3-wood from the tee for the remaining holes, yet composed himself admirably, dropping only one shot—on his final hole. He also got unlucky with a horrible lie at the edge of the bunker on the par-3 fifth hole. 'This is golf—it is what it is. It's not the first time things like this have happened. I've just learned to accept it. These things happen to everyone, and it's not the last time it's going to happen, so I just take it on the chin and try to keep moving forward. I'll try to find a driver now and then go low again tomorrow!' The final round of the UAE Challenge will start at 7:40 AM, with Erickson, Paratore, and Ritchie teeing off in the final group at 9:40 AM.

Rain check: Monsoon soaks Singapore, disrupts travel, business and leisure

SINGAPORE, March 21 — A relentless monsoon surge has drenched Singapore since Wednesday, bringing widespread disruptions to businesses, outdoor activities, and travel. According to The Straits Times (ST), the heavy rainfall, expected to persist until today, has led to flash flood warnings and cancellations across various sectors. According to the national water agency PUB, rainfall levels in some areas have far exceeded Singapore's average for March. By 7pm yesterday, Jurong West recorded 318mm of rain, while the highest in the east was 298.4mm — both surpassing the monthly average of 209.7mm. The lowest temperature recorded was 21.9C in Tuas South at around 10am yesterday. The downpour caused a 15m stretch of Mountbatten Road and Jalan Seaview to flood for about two hours in yesterday afternoon, ST reported, with water also entering a nearby property. The report added that the rain forced golf clubs, including Singapore Island Country Club (SICC), Keppel, and Sentosa, to suspend play. The US$2.5 million (RM11 million) Porsche Singapore Classic golf tournament at Laguna National Golf Resort Club was also affected, with its opening round yesterday postponed to today. Water sports venues suffered a similar fate. Ola Beach Club at Sentosa's Siloso Beach reported a drastic drop in visitors, with only 10 per cent of its usual crowd turning up on March 20. 'The businesses around us have also been badly hit. Due to the downpour, we have stopped hiring part-timers for the weekdays,' staff member Gwen Tan was quoted as saying. Other Sentosa establishments faced cancellations as well — Tanjong Beach Club saw its crowd halved, while Rumours Beach Club lost 70 per cent of its reservations yesterday. The bad weather also impacted commuters and air travellers. ST said a fallen tree on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) before the Dairy Farm Road exit caused delays towards Woodlands Checkpoint. It also said bus operator Tower Transit Singapore reported service 966 was delayed by up to 30 minutes. At Changi and Seletar airports, several flights were cancelled, retimed, or diverted. A TransNusa flight to Jakarta was cancelled, while departures to Seoul, Phuket, and Jakarta were rescheduled. Malaysian airline Firefly's operations at Seletar were also affected.

Richard Mansell wins first DP World Tour event in Singapore

SINGAPORE — Richard Mansell of England claimed his first DP World Tour title Sunday when he two-putted from about 100 feet for birdie on the 18th hole for a 6-under 66 and a one-shot victory in the Porsche Singapore Classic. Mansell, who started the final round one shot behind, ran off five straight birdies on the front nine to take the lead. His final birdie gave him the title over Keita Nakajima of Japan, who closed with a 65. The tournament was reduced to 54 holes because of rain that washed out play on Thursday. Tom McKibbin of Northern Ireland, who gave up a PGA Tour card this year to join LIV Golf, had a 68 and tied for third with Adrien Saddier of France, who also shot 68.

Mansell's Magic: Dubai-based pro seals maiden DP World Tour title in 103rd attempt

Richard Mansell's long-awaited moment arrived dramatically at the Porsche Singapore Classic, as the Dubai-based Englishman secured his maiden DP World Tour title with a thrilling finish at Laguna National Golf Resort Club. With the tournament shortened to 54 holes due to Thursday's washout, Mansell entered the final round just one shot off the lead at ten under par. What followed was a display of grit, composure, and a putting masterclass that propelled him to a one-shot victory over Japan's Keita Nakajima. However, Mansell had one final statement to make before securing the win. Standing over a monster putt of over 100 feet on the 18th green, he showed nerves of steel, rolling his effort close before sinking the decisive six-foot birdie putt to seal victory at 16 under par. 'What a Feeling' Mansell, who represented Great Britain & Ireland in the 2023 Hero Cup, was choked with emotions and said: 'What a feeling. Just to get into that position, and I played so well today. First week with a new caddie, so that was a good start. He got me to slow down a couple of times, and that really helped.' The 29-year-old has endured his fair share of close calls on Tour, including a string of near misses in 2022. 'Looking back, I probably should've just stuck with what I was doing. Instead, I went searching, tried to change, and ended up pointing fingers at why it wasn't happening,' he admitted. 'I lost a bit of love for the game, but these last six months, I've worked really hard, stayed patient, and tried to focus on myself.' Mansell paid tribute to his wife, Ellie, who has been his rock throughout the journey. 'She's been so supportive, and it means the world,' he said. 'I've just been on the phone with my mum and dad, and Ellie's parents too. So many people have believed in me, even when I stopped believing in myself. This is for them.' A Win to Build On Mansell, who now calls Dubai home, hopes this victory is just the beginning. 'To finally do it, to finally get that win… It's the most fulfilling feeling in the world. For anyone out there chasing this dream, stick with it. Moments like this make it all worth it,' he said. With this landmark triumph, Richard Mansell has firmly announced his arrival as a DP World Tour champion. And in a season filled with opportunities, this may just be the start of something big.
