More Bersatu leaders should speak up on everyday issues, not just Muhyiddin, says Chegubard

PORT DICKSON: Port Dickson Bersatu is denying claims that it wants party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to make way for his deputy Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin. Its division head Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, said his team supported Muhyiddin, who had a proven track record. "In one of the motions endorsed during our meeting on Sunday (July 6), we merely asked the president to empower more leaders to speak on people-related issues. "We did not at any point suggest that Muhyiddin should make way for Hamzah," he told reporters at the party office here. Badrul said the division also proposed that party vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Radzi Jidin, who is an academic and had worked in universities abroad, to also speak on issues instead of leaving it to Muhyiddin alone. "What we want is the party and more of its leaders at all levels to be more visible rather than remain silent. "Have there been any roadshows, press conferences or sharing of info on issues affecting the rakyat by us?" he asked, adding that the party should deal with people-related issues more effectively. He said his team wanted more leaders to speak up on any weaknesses of the unity government, which he said has been grappling with a host of issues such as the implementation of the expanded sales and service tax, e-invoicing and the increasing cost of living. It was previously reported that the division had suggested for the power transition plan be implemented immediately, granting the deputy president a significant role in day-to-day operations and representing the party in talks with other leaders. Negri Sembilan Bersatu later reiterated its support for Muhyiddin to continue leading the party. Its chief Hanifah Abu Baker expressed the state liaison committee's unwavering support for Muhyiddin to lead Perikatan Nasional in the upcoming 16th General Election. Several other party leaders also came out in support of Muhyiddin.

PD Bersatu defends proposed leadership change after backlash

Published on: Wednesday, July 09, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 09, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Port Dickson Bersatu's motion proposed that Hamzah Zainudin (left) take over as the party's 'main leader', with party president Muhyiddin Yassin becoming an adviser and mentor instead. PETALING JAYA: Port Dickson Bersatu has doubled down on its motion for a change in the party leadership, after a backlash from multiple party colleagues, including a vice-chief of the division. Port Dickson Bersatu deputy chief Akkil Aizat Othman, who tabled the motion at the division's annual general meeting (AGM) over the weekend, said he would not withdraw the proposal. 'I will not withdraw the motion. The division will issue a statement today to explain the contents of the motion,' he told FMT. The division's vice-chief, Shuhazlan Ali, claimed that the motion brought to the AGM was Akkil's personal view and did not reflect the wishes of the grassroots in Port Dickson. Akkil fired back, accusing Shuhazlan of not attending division meetings, including its AGM over the weekend. 'He only issued a press statement without reading the actual motion and which branch tabled it,' he said, denying that Port Dickson Bersatu was divided because of the motion. Port Dickson Bersatu's motion proposed that Hamzah Zainudin take over as the party's 'main leader', with Muhyiddin Yassin becoming an adviser and mentor instead. It also proposed that Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin handle the party's administrative matters, currently managed by secretary-general Azmin Ali. The motion was unanimously approved. Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz however played it down, saying Muhyiddin still had the support of the majority of Bersatu's grassroots to remain as party president. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PD Bersatu members dispute claim of unanimous leadership transition motion

PORT DICKSON: A group of members from Port Dickson Bersatu are disputing claims that a motion adopted by the division for a leadership transition plan was made unanimously. Vice-chairman Mohd Shuhazlan Ali questioned the validity of the decision, noting that about 60 members were either not invited or refused to attend the division's annual general meeting on Sunday (July 6). "How can the division propose that Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin takes up the role of adviser when he had received the mandate from members to be president only last year? "As far as we are concerned, that so-called decision was proposed by one individual purely for cheap publicity and did not reflect grassroots sentiment," he said at a press conference. Mohd Shuhazlan, despite being elected to his position, did not receive an invitation to the AGM. "I was probably not invited as I had questioned and lodged a police report regarding division matters on June 9," he added. On Sunday, Port Dickson Bersatu had passed a motion calling for a leadership power transition to enable the party to be more proactive in addressing issues affecting the people. The motion proposed that deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin be given the president's powers to perform his duties as Opposition leader more effectively. The division suggested that the power transition plan be implemented immediately, granting the deputy president a significant role in day-to-day operations and representation in talks with other leaders. However, Negri Sembilan Bersatu later reiterated its support for Muhyiddin to continue leading the party. State chief Hanifah Abu Baker expressed the state liaison committee's unwavering support for Muhyiddin to lead Perikatan Nasional in the upcoming 16th general election. Shuhazlan stated that the narrative to replace Muhyiddin as president was not new. "The move started before the party election last year and has gained momentum with the unity government seen to be grappling with issues. "The only difference is that previously, such talk was attributed to internal sources but this time it comes as a motion from a branch," he explained. Shuhazlan argued that there was no justification to replace Muhyiddin, as he has proven to be a credible and popular leader. Asked if it was true that he had been suspended by the division, Mohd Shuhazlan said he had not received any letter indicating so.

PD Bersatu division call for leadership power transition

PORT DICKSON: The Port Dickson Bersatu division has unanimously passed a motion calling for a leadership power transition to allow the party to be more proactive in fighting for issues affecting the people. The motion, filed by the Kg Bagan Pinang branch during the division's annual general meeting on Sunday (July 6), proposed that a power transition plan be put in place to allow deputy president Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin be given the powers of the president to enable him to carry out his duties as Opposition leader more effectively. In a Facebook post, Port Dickson Bersatu deputy chief Akkil Aizat Othman said the division felt the time was apt to have a succession plan. "At the same time, we are not suggesting to sideline the president (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin). "Muhyiddin can be made adviser where he will be able to lead us to Putrajaya (to win the next general elections)," he said in a Facebook post. Akkil Aizat expressed hope that the motion could be debated or discussed by the party leadership. "The younger members feel that Perikatan Nasional and Bersatu need to put in more effort to deal with people-related issues. "The current government has been grappling with such issues but unfortunately, we, the Opposition, have not been able to take advantage of this or to deal with these efficiently," he said. Drawing an analogy from a badminton match, Akkil Aizat said the Opposition must smash the shuttlecock if its opponent lifts it high and earn the point rather than give it away. He said Muhyiddin has served exceptionally as president and this was evident when he was premier during the Covid-19 pandemic. "He had administered the government well till we were able to come out of the pandemic. "But in recent times, we have noticed a glaring weakness on the part of the leadership to deal with issues affecting the rakyat," he said, adding that the party needed to convince voters that it was the right choice to lead. This, Badrul Hisham said, was important as the party had not been aggressive in championing the people's issues despite the so-called failures of the government. He said the power transition plan has to be put in place now, where the deputy president is given an important role in the day-to-day running of operations and to represent it in talks with other leaders. In another post, division chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin said the division had unanimously approved the motion for a power transition plan and additional powers for the main leadership so that Bersatu could be more aggressive and pro-active in fighting for the people's issues.
