Geronimo Power begins construction on 250MW Portage solar project in US
Geronimo Power, formerly National Grid Renewables, has commenced construction on its 250MW Portage Solar project in Portage County in the US state of Wisconsin. The project, part of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market, follows the earlier start of construction on the Apple River solar project in Polk County, Wisconsin. Portage Solar is expected to generate more than $73m in direct economic benefits during its first two decades, encompassing new tax revenue, job creation, increased local spending and charitable donations. It will provide $24m in tax revenue to the local county and townships. Combined with Apple River, the projects will bring more than $100m in direct economic impact to Wisconsin. In October 2024, Geronimo Power signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Microsoft for Portage Solar. Geronimo Power construction vice-president Joe Ibrahim stated: 'The true value of renewable energy isn't in the power it provides to the local grid. It's about the immensely positive impact on local economies in the form of new revenue streams and job creation. 'We anticipate the addition of Portage Solar to our Wisconsin portfolio will contribute more than $100m statewide – that's a huge milestone for us and a big win for our project communities.' Geronimo Power has collaborated with engineering, procurement and construction firm Burns & McDonnell on the project. Burns & McDonnell chair and CEO Leslie M Duke stated: 'As demand for data centres continues to grow, so does the need for reliable, renewable energy. 'We are proud to support Geronimo Power in the build-out of the Portage site. Together with local union halls and contractors, we are supporting the workforce and strengthening the community as we build.' The solar project is anticipated to create 300 construction jobs, with a focus on employing local Wisconsin craft labour. Geronimo Power has also committed $1.25m to local charities and organisations over the project's first 20 years through a dedicated charitable fund. 2nd woman gets probation after raids on Ravenna massage parlors
RAVENNA − The second of two women arrested in raids on city massage parlors will serve three years on probation. Portage County Common Pleas Court Judge Laurie J. Pittman on July 14 ordered Hongziang Liu, 48, of New York to serve probation, with the first year under intensive supervision. The women previously had been accused of promoting prostitution. Pittman handed down the same sentence in June to Aijuan Xiong, 40, also of New York. As with Xiong, Pittman agreed to transfer supervision of Liu's probation to New York authorities. Ravenna police said they, the Summit County Collaborative Against Human Trafficking and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation executed search warrants at the massage parlors Liu and Xiong operated at 112 N. Chestnut St. and 444 S. Meridian St. The collaborative is made up of the Ohio Attorney General's Office, and sheriff's offices in Summit, Stark and Portage counties. The operation followed a months-long joint investigation that included the use of undercover law enforcement officers. Both women pleaded no-contest in May to fifth-degree felony possessing criminal tools, a cell phone, as well as receiving proceeds from the commission of an offense subject to forfeiture proceedings, a fifth-degree felony for Liu and a first-degree misdemeanor for Xiong. The latter charges include forfeiture specifications related to confiscated cash, about $8,300 in Liu's case, and $710 in Xiong's. In a plea deal, it was agreed the women's no contest pleas would result in them being found guilty. In addition, a fourth-degree felony promoting prostitution charge included in grand jury indictments was dismissed. Liu, who speaks Mandarin Chinese, did not comment through an interpreter. Her attorney, Joseph Dubyak, told Pittman prior to sentencing that Liu has been "cooperative" and is an "excellent candidate" for probation. "She has been in America for almost 15 years now. She has no prior criminal record," he said. Pittman warned that there was a chance Liu's conviction could result in deportation, but that would be a federal matter. "We don't know what could happen," she said. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Dan Sallerson said the charges the women pleaded to are less likely to lead to deportation than promoting prostitution would have been. Pittman also ordered that Liu pay a $300 fine and $259 in court costs within three years. She has the option of paying the debt by performing community service at $11 per hour. Vista Sands Solar Farm reaches deal to protect greater prairie chickens in Portage County
POYNETTE − The Wisconsin Wildlife Federation and Vista Sands Solar have reached an agreement that should allow the planned Portage County solar farm to move forward. Late last year, the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin approved the Vista Sands Solar project, which will be the largest of its kind in Wisconsin and among the most powerful in the country, generating near 1.2 gigawatts of electricity. In early February, the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation filed an appeal in Columbia County regarding the project, expressing concern for Wisconsin's threatened prairie chicken population, in an effort to stop the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin's approval of the project, according to online court records and a joint news release from the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation and Vista Sands Solar Farm. The agreement between the Wildlife Federation and Vista Sands, which was announced Monday morning, states the Wildlife Federation will be withdrawing its appeal, as part of the agreement, pending formal approval from the Public Service Commission. Readers ask: What's going on at the Plover water tower by I-39? We have your answers. Local business news: A new restaurant will replace Grazies Italian Grill in Stevens Point. When will they open? The agreement comes after several months of discussions aimed at protecting Wisconsin's greater prairie chickens while maintaining the full capacity and progress of the solar project, according to the joint news release. Conservationists and wildlife advocates had raised concerns about the project's proximity to the Buena Vista Grassland State Wildlife Area, home of the state's largest population of prairie chickens. As part of the agreement, Vista Sands Solar Farm is building on its existing commitments to restoring nearly 7,000 acres of native grasslands in the region. A key element of the agreement is Vista Sands setting aside 750 additional acres for the greater prairie chicken, according to the joint news release. Vista Sands has committed $1 million to the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation to be used for habitat restoration and land acquisition for in the prairie chicken management priority areas, according to the news release. The Vista Sands Solar Farm plans remain on schedule and capacity remains intact, according to the news release. More than half of the project, being built by Doral Renewables, will be in the Portage County town of Grant and most of the rest will be in the town of Plover, with a small section in the village of Plover. The county and communities will receive a total of $6.5 million a year in payments from the project.
