9.8L kids under five screened for stunting
Lucknow: In its exercise against child stunting, the UP govt has measured the growth of over 9.80 lakh children under five years of age across 75 districts through 7,500 anganwadi centres.
This mass measurement marks a major step towards achieving sustainable development goal (SDG) target of reducing stunting by 2030. "Through Sambhav Abhiyan 5.0 and the Poshan Pathshala initiative, we are focusing on the critical first 1,000 days of a child's life to prevent stunting," said an official. "By training mothers on breastfeeding and balanced diets, and conducting the first-ever state-wide stunting measurement drive, we aim to meet the SDG target by 2030.
"
The campaign's core focus is stunting elimination. During the July 14–15 measurement drive, 7,500 nodal officers verified children's height and weight to ensure accurate data. Departments of health, education and child development jointly monitored selected villages to enable timely intervention.
Alongside, the Poshan Pathshala initiative, launched during World Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1–7), promoted the theme "Investing in breastfeeding, investing in the future". Mothers were trained on exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and balanced diets thereafter – a "six months, seven times" strategy aimed at preventing stunting in the first 1,000 days of life.
