Sarawak aims to streamline petrol station construction for economic growth
KUCHING: Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) Sarawak is working to speed up and simplify petrol station construction processes. This initiative supports the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 and Bureaucratic Red Tape Reform Programme (RKB). MPC Deputy Director-General Dr Mohammad Norjayadi Tamam stated that reducing regulatory hurdles will attract investment and enhance productivity. 'A smoother process will improve fuel access in rural areas and create job opportunities,' he said. He added that these improvements will foster a transparent and competitive investment environment. A two-day engagement session was held to identify inefficiencies in petrol station approvals. The session aimed to eliminate overlapping procedures and draft high-impact solutions for faster processing. MPC expects streamlined approvals to accelerate energy infrastructure development. Benefits include lower costs, shorter waiting times, and expanded fuel coverage in strategic areas. 'This project will serve as a model for improving other development permits in Sarawak,' the agency said. The initiative could attract more domestic and foreign investment by ensuring stable energy supply. MPC hopes this effort will strengthen investor confidence in Sarawak's economy. Sarawak aligns tourism development with RMK13 investment zones
KUCHING: The Sarawak government has expressed readiness to align its tourism development strategies with the newly announced tourism investment zones under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13). Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak's Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, stated that while the state already possesses strong tourism offerings, further collaboration with federal initiatives will enhance mutual benefits. 'If the tourism investment zones include areas like Mulu, Niah, the Kuching Delta, and the Rainforest World Music Festival, then we are already aligned. We just need deeper discussions,' he said. He emphasised the importance of avoiding overlaps and instead strengthening ongoing and future efforts. Sarawak's tourism sector has shown promising growth this year, with visitor numbers nearing five million and revenue surpassing RM1 billion. Abdul Karim, who also oversees youth and entrepreneurial development, stressed that socioeconomic programs for bumiputera must align with Sarawak's existing ecosystem to ensure effective implementation. He welcomed RMK13's focus on expanding business opportunities through funding, training, and mentorship, noting that the state government has similar initiatives under the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. Speaking at the Youth EdXchange Programme 2025, he highlighted the importance of youth empowerment. 'Your experiences—from community immersion to sustainability workshops—prove that when given a platform, young people lead with purpose,' he said. 'The Sarawak government will continue implementing PCDS 2030 to ensure socio-economic prosperity for all,' he stated in a Facebook post by the Office of the Premier. The Premier also outlined key focus areas, including digital economy expansion, AI adoption, and sustainable environmental practices. Sectors like oil and gas, plantations, tourism, and modern agriculture will receive accelerated development to bolster economic resilience. Education remains a priority, with free higher education in selected fields at state-owned universities starting next year. 'This initiative allows students to focus on their studies while easing financial burdens on families,' he added. Abang Johari reaffirmed Sarawak's dedication to safeguarding its rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and thanked organisers for ensuring a successful Sarawak Day celebration in Miri. He said this year's Sarawak Day celebration, themed 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' (Progressive and Prosperous Sarawak), reflects the state government's and the people's shared commitment to reinforcing strong ties among one another. 'The Sarawak government will continue implementing the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 to ensure inclusive socio-economic prosperity,' he said in a post on the Office of the Premier of Sarawak's Facebook page today. The message was also featured in the official programme booklet for the state-level Sarawak Day 2025 celebration, to be held in Miri tomorrow. Abang Johari reaffirmed the state government's commitment to enhancing digital economy and artificial intelligence (AI), driving environmental sustainability, and accelerating the development of key sectors such as oil and gas, plantation, tourism, and modern agriculture. In addition, he also emphasised that quality and inclusive education are central to human capital development. 'Therefore, starting next year, free education will be provided for all Sarawakian students in selected fields at state-owned universities. This is to enable students to focus on their studies and ease the financial burden on their families,' he said. Abang Johari also reiterated the state government's commitment to continue upholding Sarawak's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), and expressed appreciation to all parties involved in making this year's Sarawak Day celebration a success. 'The transfer occurred before Sarawak officially became part of the Federation on September 16, 1963,' he said. Wan Junaidi described this as the foundation of Sarawak's identity as a sovereign state within Malaysia. He paid tribute to pioneers like Ningkan and Datuk Seri Tawi Sli, acknowledging their roles in establishing self-governance.
