MITRA allocates RM652k to boost Johor Indian micro-entrepreneurs

JOHOR BAHRU: The Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (MITRA) has disbursed RM652,000 to Indian micro-entrepreneurs in Johor as part of efforts to enhance economic development within the community. The funding, allocated to 128 approved applicants, includes business equipment for 38 recipients who attended the presentation ceremony. MITRA chairman P. Prabakaran stated that the initiative aligns with the Malaysia MADANI vision, focusing on uplifting socio-economic conditions for small traders requiring capital and equipment support. 'This assistance strengthens micro-entrepreneur networks and ensures the Indian community benefits from inclusive development,' he said after the event. MITRA receives an annual budget of RM100 million for nationwide community programmes. Prabakaran also highlighted three major ongoing projects worth RM21 million, covering dialysis centres, kindergartens, and an impact study. 'The dialysis programme will aid 2,000 patients, while the kindergarten initiative supports over 100,000 children,' he added. The impact study, conducted with a public university, evaluates MITRA's programme effectiveness from 2021 to 2023. 'This is MITRA's first comprehensive review to ensure funded projects deliver measurable benefits,' Prabakaran explained. - Bernama

70 Indian entrepreneurs set to benefit from Mitap agricultural grants

SERDANG: A total of 70 participants from the Indian community are set to benefit from agricultural transformation grants of up to RM30,000 under the Malaysian Indian Transformative Agri Programme (Mitap) 2024/2025. Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (Mitra) special task force committee chairman P. Prabakaran (pic) said the programme, organised by Mitra in collaboration with Mardi Corporation Sdn Bhd, focuses on developing the capacity of Indian entrepreneurs in the modern agriculture and food processing sectors. "Mitra received more than 250 applications for Mitap, and a total of 104 participants attended the Business Model Canvas (BMC) Seminar on Wednesday (July 30), which is a basic module in forming a sustainable business. "Through the BMC, we will assess each individual based on their proposal paper and the potential of the project to be developed," he told reporters after officiating the seminar at the MardiCorp Academy here on Wednesday. The two-day seminar aims to help participants enhance their competitiveness, strengthen entrepreneurial skills, and expand their business networks. Prabakaran said Mitra and Mardi Corp would continue to strengthen the government's commitment to empowering the Indian community by providing a comprehensive agricultural ecosystem, including up-to-date technical training. "Mitap is not only a symbol of support for the Indian community, but also a reflection of the government's determination to ensure the community is not left behind in the development of the modern agricultural sector," he said. Meanwhile, Mardi Governing Board chairman Dr Azman Ismail said he was optimistic that the strategic partnership between Mitra and Mardi Corp would lead to the emergence of more successful Indian entrepreneurs. "Mardi has a long history of working with many successful entrepreneurs, including Ramly Burger and Adabi. "I am confident that several more entrepreneurs will emerge from here (Mitap). This batch seems more promising because the programme is now better organised and more systematic. In the past, participants had to figure things out on their own with little guidance," he said.- Bernama

Tension in Karur shrine as board allowing entry of all communities removed

KARUR: Tension prevailed in Chinnatharapuram on Thursday after a section of caste Hindu people removed a notice board, installed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, in front of a Mariyamman temple in the village. The notice board, which was placed as per a court order, states that people from all communities, regardless of caste, are permitted to worship and participate in temple rituals. It also warned that criminal action would be taken against anyone who attempts to prevent devotees from offering prayers at the temple. According to police, the temple is under the HR&CE department since 1973. Members of both SC and MBC communities have been participating in pujas and temple rituals. However, due to a dispute over some issues in 2018, both groups approached the court. The matter is pending. During a hearing on July 15, the court instructed HR&CE officials to take steps to resume worship at the temple and to display a notice board announcing that all communities are allowed to offer prayers. As per the direction, officials placed the notice board in front of the temple. Upon knowing this, a group of people from MBC community assembled in front of the temple on Thursday. Aravakurichi Tahsildar Mahendran, additional superintendent of police Prabakaran, Aravakurichi DSP Abdul Kapoor and local police personnel rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the crowd. Despite their efforts, the crowd removed the notice board. Subsequently, a complaint was lodged with Chinnatharapuram police and they registered a case.

MABIC boosts STEM literacy in Tamil schools nationwide

BANGI: The Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Literacy Empowerment initiative for Tamil National-Type Schools (SJKT), known as Ariviyal Ainthiram, implemented by the Malaysian Biotechnology Information Centre (MABIC), has benefited nearly 79,000 students from 525 SJKTs nationwide. With an allocation of RM698,227 from Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA), Ariviyal Ainthiram focuses on raising awareness and interest among SJKT students in STEM. MITRA Special Task Force Committee chairman, P. Prabakaran, said MABIC had received the MITRA grant to implement various STEM-related programmes, including science quiz competitions and the publication of the Petri Dish science newspaper, which was also distributed to all 525 SJKTs. 'The programme, known as 'Ariviyal Ainthiram,' is implemented in two components, running from October 2023 to July 2025. The first component involves the distribution of Petri Dish newspapers, which include a special Tamil-language insert focused on STEM literacy. 'The highlight of this programme is the 'Who Wants to Be a Scientist' competition, held today, featuring 90 top students selected from over 2,000 participants nationwide for the science quiz. The final round was conducted in an interactive format and judged by academic experts from several local universities,' he said. He said this to reporters after attending the final round of the 'Who Wants to Be a Scientist' competition at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) here today. According to Prabakaran, the Ariviyal Ainthiram's success also reflects the capability of grant recipients who adhere to the application guidelines and implement the programme in line with the specified requirements. 'Many have failed to secure the MITRA grant because they did not follow the basic guidelines. However, MABIC has proven that when the application process is done correctly and the programme is implemented effectively, the results can be very impressive,' he said. Meanwhile, MABIC executive director Dr Mahaletchumy Arujanan expressed her appreciation to MITRA for the allocation, which has enabled MABIC to implement the STEM literacy programme for the target group. 'MABIC not only aims to deliver the newspaper to Tamil schools, but we also want it to be read and fully utilised. From there, we hope it will spark greater interest in STEM and encourage students to seek out other STEM-related resources. That is MABIC's main goal. 'We also want SJKT students to understand that STEM fields are increasingly becoming viable and attractive career choices, and we want to prepare them for that,' she said. - Bernama
