HMEL secures three Indian patents including global-first tech for crude and naphtha co-transport
New Delhi: HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited (HMEL) has been granted three Indian patents , including two that introduce what the company claims to be the world's first design for pipeline pigs enabling the simultaneous transportation of naphtha in crude pipelines . With these additions, HMEL's total number of granted patents stands at nine, out of over 44 filed to date. The patented industrial pipeline cleaning pigs are engineered to allow the movement of two distinct hydrocarbons—such as crude oil and naphtha—within the same pipeline. According to the company, these are the first patented designs of their kind globally and are intended to enable dual hydrocarbon logistics in a single pipeline network. The third patent is for an apparatus that generates green oxy-hydrogen gas. HMEL said the device is designed to support process improvements within refinery operations and is aligned with the company's focus on clean technology deployment. As part of recognising in-house innovation, HMEL Managing Director and CEO Prabh Das presented the 'Inventor Award' to employee-innovators behind the patents. 'Securing these patents is a testament to the ingenuity, passion, and technical excellence of the HMEL team,' Das said. 'We remain committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability in the energy sector.' According to the company, its patent implementation rate stands at over 90 per cent. HMEL stated that R&D and innovation are central to its long-term strategy with a focus on applying patented technologies across core operations.
